Tax deductables! Pencil necks! Thieves! HIGH SPEED CAR CHASES!
Well, all right, maybe not high speed car chases. So, the background: last year, Neil Gaiman, author of such lovely things as Neverwhere and the Sandman series etc., was contacted to speak at a library in Minnesota for a hefty speaking fee, which was paid for by a fund which (a) stated any leftover money would be lost if not used, and (b) was also not available for books, salaries, or other useful things. Neil Gaiman did so, and subsequently donated the speaking fee to charities.

All's well that ends well, right? Well, except that Matt Dean, the House Majority Leader, decided it was time to let his long-simmering grudge be aired to the world: 'Dean said that Gaiman, "who I hate," was a "pencil-necked little weasel who stole $45,000 from the state of Minnesota."'

Neil is... well, he's not well pleased. Nor is his Twitter.

"Sad & funny. Minnesota Republicans have a "hate" list. Like Nixon did. I'm on it. They also don't like capitalism. http://t.co/FObmLGo"

"It's strange watching a grownup high school bully in power. But the bully vocabulary remains the same. http://t.co/FObmLGo"

"And for those curious how and why I made it onto the hate list, what I wrote at the time on my blog. http://bit.ly/lMxsWQ"

"Any nice, sane Minnesota Republicans reading this, please vote for someone who isn't a bully with a hate list next time."

"You can listen to the Stillwater speech that all the Pencil-neck fuss is about at http://bit.ly/k3lA1B (You need to go down to point 2.)"

He also happened to link to Dean's blog, which proceeded to crash. Whoops.

So you'd think that Dean would realize his mistake and apologize, right? Well... sort of. Why?

His mommy made him do it.

The universe collectively facepalms.

(Bonus funny from the comments, courtesy from someone called Lucas: "Do weasel thieves steal just weasels? Or do they also steal ferrets, otters, and wolverines? In the case of the latter, how do they arrange for transportation?")

Completely off-topic, but I had no idea Neil Gaiman lived in the US. *strokes chin pensively*

Also, on the topic of Neil, who else is PSYCHED for his Doctor Who ep next week??

Neither did I! I thought all this time that he was in jolly old England. I imagine that he keeps that a little bit quiet--the man does have an, ahem, enthusiastic fan base.

Er, actually, far from keeping it quiet, he writes about his whereabouts and personal life quite frequently on his blog and twitter. And today his wife and her fans are spamming nude pictures of her all over twitter.

Well yes, I've seen that. And Cabal and his beehives and all those little bits of news.

I don't recall him ever specifically saying that he lived in Minnesota, though. I knew he lives someplace snowy, I just thought it was in England.

Well, there isn't really anywhere snowy in England, so that's probably your first clue. ;) Not even in Scotland, and they're the most northern parts of the UK.

Dude, legit, I know nothing of English weather except what The Dark Is Rising taught me, and that included a magical blizzard brought on by forces of Evil.

Yeah, come to think of it he doesn't mention the actual location of his house so often. I guess for good reason. But I hear it's in Wisconsin.

"don't recall him ever specifically saying that he lived in Minnesota"

IIRC, he lives in Wisconsin. It was pretty close to a summer camp I worked at. I didn't know this until after camp was over, because my sister-in-law joked that she thought about driving out to his house in [whatever little town he lives in.] I said "That was right near camp. We drove through there every weekend!"

This conversation happened 4 years ago, so that's why I can't remember what the town was. There were lots of tiny little towns in that part of WI.

Yes, there is. It was a Christmas present to him this past year (or maybe a year ago, I forget). But I thought it was profoundly awesome.

I learned he lived in the states when The Graveyard Book started getting put on lists of possible Newbery contenders, and everybody started saying, "Wait, isn't he English?" But then his agent gave a statement about how he's an official US resident and was therefore eligible for the award, and we all continued on our merry way.

haha, TBH, I'm more psyched about tomorrow's, because PIRATES! And I really need a breather episode after that season opener.

I'm in that wonderful place of feeling equally psyched for both. Because OMG PIRATES is exactly what I want to be watching this week, but by next week, I will be so ready for Gaiman-brand epic storytelling.

I'm psyched for anything that doesn't involve pregnancy or marriage. Because seriously? Not Days of our Lives. Or even Eastenders.

Oh, man, I can't wait! If this week's episode weren't about pirates, I'd resent it for being in the way. But it has pirates (and Amy with a sword), so it's okay.

I asked him once why he'd live in a rural state, of all places. He said that for the price of a flat in London he could live in an Addams Family-style house in the States, and that pretty much solved the matter (because, dude, Addams Family house).

I suspect it also has to do with being able to get these morbid plush bunnies from a toymaker somewhere.

I would be one of these. It's desperately cool when somebody you know becomes part of a legend. (And is plainly so psyched about it himself.) :)

I've a bone to pick with you, Diane Duane. You made me cry at work. There I was, innocently reading The Book of Night with Moon during my free time, and you hit me in the nose with the whole Susan thing and I'm reaching for tissues. How could you?

...Then I didn't do anything to you that I didn't also do to myself, and balance is maintained.

...And no regrets. This is what an artist does. The flip side of it is making people laugh uncontrollably, but the nature of the beast is that they don't complain so much about that. (Unless it happens on the subway, at which point they piss and moan endlessly, and I tell them to suck it up.)

I am just siiiiidling in here to say that, speaking of equilibrium, it has always made my inner science geek happy that use of magic in the Young Wizards books doesn't blow a raspberry at science and doesn't break the second law of thermodynamics.

And now I shall sidle back to my corner.

Oh, fair enough, I suppose. I only picked up the YW books (well, got them on my Kindle; I was in Japan at the time, so thank you *very* much for getting them into ebook format) because you seemed so cool, and I've enjoyed them very much indeed.

*fangirls you*
