Plagiarism Wank!
Short, but sweet.

Stop_Plagiarism is a comm dedicated to *drumroll* stopping plagiarism. One day PolgaraWolf is brought to their attention. She's posted some Doctor Who fanfic that's got plagiarized bits in it, so the OP writes her about it.

The whole thing is Here but TLDR, Polagara wolf responds with:

"Listen, Lady, Mister, whatever the hell you are,

I spent six hours in a hospital last night with my dad and I am NOT in the mood for this shit. So let me make this very clear for you: THIS IS AN OLD STORY THAT HAS BEEN ON MY COMPUTER FOR MOST OF A YEAR FOR FANDOMS THAT I NEVER HAD ANY TIME TO REALLY TAKE PART IN, DUE TO MY DAD BEING OFF WORK AND IN THE HOSPITAL WHILE I WAS TRYING TO WORK FULL TIME AND WRITE SAID STORY AND THEN DAD WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER AND I STOPPED WRITING IT. Is that bloody well clear enough for you?

STOP EMAILING ME.

Oddly enough, this does not persuade people that she didn't plagiarize. People start digging and pulling out more instances where she'd plagiarized. So what do you when people start calling you out? Apologize? Delete and slink away? Call out the internet lawyers? The third one.

I don't know who in the heck you people think you are, but I DEMAND you take this thread down right now or that you at least be honest and brave enough to give me your contact info so for each and every one of you to the police for taking part in this crap, which is cyber harassment and libel.

This is even funnier when you realize that several of the main people involved aren't even living in the USA (one's from Norway). Perhaps PolgaraWolf intends to try her in the Hague.

"AU" This word is not what she thinks...
[info]killer_gopher

Man, this one has been a train wreck to watch over the last month. The best part is that she thinks it's okay to take things because she's an AU writer! Really, didn't know that's what AU meant!

I have explained this already MULTIPLE times and I will only do so once more: I am an AU fanfic writer. Note the "fanfic" and the "AU" designation, as both draw from sources other than the self and are therefore sometimes classified as plagiarism. THEY ARE NOT.

Apparently, there is an alternate universe out there where it's okay to steal large sections of other author's work, both fanfiction and published, and re-arrange them into other fandoms and it is not considered plagiarism. The more you know!

Also of the things she deleted are listed here: http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/14576.html?thread=59933424#t59933424 and http://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/15158.html?thread=63518518#t63518518

There are warnings in a few fic coms. This person is beyond amazing...the fact is they play the constant victim and cry 'wolf' when confronted.

And apparently you can't plagiarize if you have dial-up.

How did they manage in the old days, when they didn't even have the internet, I wonder?

Actually, one thing that concerns me is that polgarawolf may not realize the can of worms she could be opening if she actually tries making complaints to the police about this. Fanfiction is generally a pretty murky aspect of fandom that's usually granted benign neglect by canon 'authorities' (e.g. JK Rowling re harry potter, or Joss Whedon for Firefly/Buffy/etc); if someone gets legal attention called to fanfiction, it might cause a clampdown on fanfic due to the old "needing to be seen doing something" phenomenon that causes much sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Surely the sheer volume of text linked from her ff.net profile should have tipped people off? She's posted well over 2,500,000 (of other people's?) words there since January 2005. Just think of the physical effort involved in actually sitting down and writing 2,500,000 words! I make my living by writing - I do about 6-8 hours on most days - and at a rough estimate it would take me ten years to produce that much assuming it was all original. But PW tells us she doesn't have time to read fiction because of her family circumstances ... well, actually writing it takes up a fair bit of time too. If she doesn't have time to read, where on earth does she find the time to write the equivalent of over fifty novels in seven years? That's one every seven weeks; a thousand words a day, rain or shine, come hell or high water. Even Enid Blyton would have been hard put to keep up with that, and that doesn't allow time off for holidays or anything else - let alone any other form of employment.

I'm quite willing to accept that writers have different speeds of composition and vary in the amount of time they're able to spend working on their fiction, but if this girl had written everything she claimed to have written she'd be some kind of marvel of the universe and people would be putting up statues to her. And I for one would want to know how she did it.

Is she trying to say that she just couldn't help plagiarizing the shit out of other fans' writing because she was trying to work full time and take care of her sick father? Did she think she was required to turn out a certain volume of fic in a certain amount of time, and that plagiarizing was just how she made ends meet in the circumstances?

It's fanfic. You're not getting paid for this. You're not going to achieve fame and fortune by making a name for yourself as a prolific Doctor Who fanficcer. If you need to work full time and take care of a sick parent, then just...take some time off fic-writing. No one's quality of life will suffer if you fail to meet your word-count goals.
