On Snapedom [info]marionros/[info]smallpotato made a post - Teacher Snape and Student Harry, where she argued that Snape was a wonderful teacher and Harry was a prejuidiced brat. An anon named "Maria" bravely tried to take on Marionros, but to no avail.

This sort of stuff has just gotten kind of sad and boring to me. Watching these people still stewing in their butthurt some four years after the series concluded tells me they'll likely be whining to their graves, and it just makes me pity them.

Just this past weekend I was talking about something like this with friends. I don't understand what it is about fandom that gives the impression that you can't love one thing without hating something else.

So you love the character of Snape? Fine, he's an awesome character. How do other characters factor into it at all? I guess they need to justify it since the books were all from Harry's perspective so we saw a lot of negativity towards Snape, but Harry's tunnel-vision was a part of the story-telling, it's okay (and even encouraged) to disagree with his assessments and nobody's wrong there.

...this is why I pretty much avoid all fandoms and enjoy things on my own. Agreeing with above. It's been four years. GET OVER IT!

The first time I've read "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", I utterly hated it. Still do, as a matter as fact. And no, it wasn't the crappy writing or the story that upset me so much, but the awful character of Harry Potter.

Then... why read the rest? It's not like Harry goes away.

In short: Snape might be a grim, sarcastic bastard demanding respect, but he *does* merit that respect, and Harry, from the very first day, refuses to give that respect.

I saw a teacher who, when confronted with a disrespectful student in class tries to discipline said student, only to be frustrated by a manipulative Headmaster-with-an-agenda and an author who clearly can't stand anyone, real or fictional, being in authority over her self-insert protagonist
How dare the author who invented her own characters and fictional universe not know how they should behave! How dare the Harry Potter books revolve around Harry Potter!
It's sort of comforting that Snape fans don't seem to change - I mean he's a great character but he's also an asshole taking out his frustration regarding his great unrequited love out on Lily's unsuspecting offspring from day one. Not exactly teacher of the year material.

For all that we are told by the author that the Dursleys were terribly mean to Harry, Harry behaves as a little Dudley. He is the poster boy of the spoilt kid who never had to do anything, work for anything or achieved anything. Adults, and especially teachers (such as Snape, Binns, Trelawny, etc) but also tother authority figures (Ministry of Magic) are not to be respected. The only adults, we are told, who are good and 'nice' are those who pander to Harry and who never say 'no' to him.

"Spoilt". Regularly starved, locked in a small dark space for days at a time, used as slave labor, constantly belittled and verbally and psychologically abused by his only caretakers.

And they wonder why this kid might have a problem with trusting authority figures? Really?

I love how she works herself up into a frothing rage over fictional kids "disrespecting" a fictional adult. If disrespect being shown towards adults is such a sensitive subject for her, then she really ought to stay away from children's lit-- or, really, away from anything with a target audience of under-18. Because if it's aimed towards kids or teens, chances are the heroes will be kids/teens and most of the adults will either be incompetent or evil. It's called escapist fantasy, marionros.

Also, imagine how dull the HP series would have been if they were written in a marionros-approved way. Harry all sitting in class and diligently working like a "good little boy" and obediently taking it when Snape chews him out for messing up, going to bed at a reasonable hour and never setting a toe out of line. I mean that sounds fuckin' awful, right?

I propose a new Internet law: anyone falling back on John Rosemond to prove their argument automatically loses. Granted it's not too likely to be used outside certain circles, but there's really nothing to be improved by dragging in his douchebaggery.

Oh, these people again. /yawn

There are two perfect solutions to their problem (well, other than the impossible of smacking people through tcp/ip): write fanfic. Or, if you can't deal with your version not being canon, cut the apron strings, strip the canon references, and write original fiction. (I'm just happy I saw myself in wankers like this and took my own advice. I've never regretted it for a minute, and even appreciate my old fandom a lot better now that I'm not contorting my headcanon to make it fit.)

Well, duh. Everyone knows the good teachers put you down whenever they can. It's that boot on the back that gives you a healthy dose of reality, donchaknow. And if the kid stands up for him or herself, well. That's just acting up, is what that is. No one likes a difficult child, Harry. No one.

I...I'm trying not to make this personal, but pfff that's failing. I had a math teacher in elementary that would threaten the class and so goddamn terrified me that I still can't look at math without a second's thought of OH GOD NO and I'M TOO STUPID FOR THIS D: I still remember her sixteen-letter name and the pointed insults.

I can't even find the funny in this anymore. :/

They keep drawing parallels between Snape and his students as though they're peers and it's really bugging me. "Oh, so it's okay when Harry reacts purely on emotion but not when Snape does? SLYTHERIN OPPRESSION!" No it's not okay that Harry acts impulsively and does stupid thoughtless things, but he's a kid and kids do not have the same impulse control and sense of propriety that adults do. That's, y'know, part of what makes them kids. Snape is a grown man and should have the self-restraint to not lash out at Harry just because Harry's dad was mean to him years and years ago - and if he does it anyway, he can damn well be held accountable.

They also seem to fail to understand that Harry is intended to be a flawed character and an unreliable narrator - and again, a kid, and most kids dislike something about school or their teachers and a lot of them will act up and poke fun at those teachers around their friends. And they have absolutely no grasp of the fact that Harry was severely neglected and abused by his only caregivers for ten solid years and that this would naturally have an effect on how he reacted to other authority figures, but other people have brought this up already.

I would love to point out to these people the fact that Snape was a horrible teacher because he frankly didn't like children AT ALL, but I'm guessing it would go over as well as anything else anyone ever says that contradicts their overmind.
