So much negativity!
In honor of the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys tour coming to Philadelphia, a writer at the Philadelphia branch of the AV Club posts an article about how this dual-nostalgia tour doesn't work, even though/especially as the author was a New Kids on the Block fan when he was 9. Fairly normal in tone and content for a website like the AV Club, and since it's on one of the regional sites, who cares, right?

Nick Carter, obviously. The Backstreet Boys singer is "not gonna let this guy dog me and my hard working 8 brothers." Hearing the alarm sounded, the NKOTBSB fans rush to defend the honor of their champions.

Musical nazis-they are everywhere. And the more people enjoy themselves with the simple pleasures of pop music, of whatever genre or generation, the more they chant and march and throw their salutes into the air. Amazingly though, the very preteen and teen aged fans who are so disparaged in this article for their blind alliance to boybands have grown up. We aren't blind, we're very aware of where they come from, who is making money off of them and who is not. They are no longer our only musical enjoyment, but by GOD, we're old enough now to not give a rat's damn about what the musical "purists" say. So rant away, I'm heading out to travel a couple of states to see the Backstreet Boys in NKOTBSB!! I Want It That Way!

You are so full of hatred and navigability it's scary. Backstreet Boys have FAR more talent than you will ever HOPE to achieve in life. You are a bitter old idiot who is most likely lacks many friends. NKOTB, BSB, N'SYNC, etc all got where they were because they have talent. Fans associate with that music, grow, appreciate it, and continue to support their beloved artists. So just because their vocal ability can't pierce your frozen, blackened heart, doesn't mean you have any business to tear them down like you have. If you don't like that type of music, shut up and move on. I don't like A Tribe Called Quest or Public Enemy, but I'm not about to write a scathing review of them or insult you for liking them. GROW THE F*** UP.

Synical ignorance, Negative oblivian, BSB as well as NKOTB are icons, they make people like myself happy and maybe just maybe if you had a brain inside your big head youd realize its not the looks or esspecially thier age that does that, Its thier art and passion for thier craft we as fans crave. Apparently you can remember the bliss you felt as a child but have lost the lust for life as an adult- listen to thier music and find a small piece of what it is that defined your career as a music writer to begin with, the love for the art.

And that's just from the first page. Of six. 499 comments and counting!

Yeah, there are plenty of other spelling errors in there, but this sticks out the most.

Does NKOTBSB stand for New Kids on the Backstreet Boys? Because that sounds more like a slash fiction fansite than a comeback concert tour.

Actually, I distinctly recall their* vocal pitches (which were all over the damn place) piercing my tender young ears back in the day.

Perhaps I'm just full of synical ignorance and negative oblivian.

*'Their' referring to NKOTB. I was a delightfully obsessed 12-year-old, but I still crawled the walls when wrong notes were hit...and there were many.

I'm not quite sure why the negative review was a surprise, since everyone knows that 95% of all AV Club writers and commentators are pretentious assholes. They don't like anything that has ever been construed as even maybe kind of pop. Or popular in any form. Or critically acclaimed by mainstream media.

I do admit to laughing and laughing the other night, though, when I saw that two of my cousins (ages 37 and 40) went to that Philly concert.

(True confession: I have a copy of Hangin' Tough on my iPod as we speak.)

I wonder what he'd have to say about the fact I didn't like New Kids On The Block when it was popular, and only started liking the Backstreet Boys when they stopped being the flavour of the month, because then I didn't have to roll my eyes so hard I'd strain something every time one of my classmates would talk about how they dated AJ for "the first time" twice. With two different stories. And then when they stopped denied ever liking them.

To be honest I love Both bands. I went gaga over BSB first and have been a huge fan for 12 years now. I love them now more then ever and their music helped me through a lot. Then about 10 years ago my Best Friend made me listen to NKOTB songs and I fell in love with their music too. I am a fan of them and I cant wait to see them on stage like I used to dream about. But I am a bigger fan of BSB. But I know when I go to the concert I will be singing to every song and screaming my head off. I dont care what people think. I love them both.

Out of this entire insane tidal wave of BSB commenters, you alone have managed to express "Hey, you may not like these bands, but I would like to let you know that I sure do!" without caps lock, chains of exclamation points, misspelled condescension, a fundamental misunderstanding of "journalism" vs. "opinion piece," the claim that the tour being sold out invalidates the writer's opinion, or the argument that the writer is a jealous ugly stupid loser who can't get laid and has no friends.

Good job, Lizzyanne! You are a delight! I just thought I'd recognize that publicly.

<3 the person who had to read all these

I haven't gone through all the comments yet, but I suspect that may be the only comment of that variety in the whole thread.

I may understand Mr. Carter being irrationally incensed towards anyone who do a slight menace towards the way he and his pals pay the mortgage of their homes, but c'mon! By now, everybody should know that attacks towards Boy Bands are like the retirement/revival concerts of Cher and Ilan Chester: a bianual event everybody dreads and asks but still repeats just because.

I'd like to say I care (not) about this, but back when NKOTB and BSB were relevant (?) I was either too young to know about that crazy gringo Menudo-like band and too haunted escaping the obnoxious Servando and Florentino fangirls, respectively. Ah, the Nineties, where Shakira was a good musician and reggaeton didn't exist! And that original BSB album was bought to help my young sister in her High School English homework, honest.

Okay, this confused me because I thought Backstreet Boys were significantly after NKOTB, so much after them that they wouldn't even have the same audience. So I looked them up.

NKOTB was driving me crazy with their ubiquity and with all my friends being obsessed with them when I was in middle school. Backstreet Boys were something I sometimes heard at the grocery store when I was in college (for the first time). According to Wikipedia, NKOTB disbanded the year Backstreet Boys formed. So... I don't get this tour.

Man, this reminds me of back in the day when the BSB fans tried to stage an uprising because MTV allegedly wouldn't premiere the "Just Want You to Know" video on TRL because they were in a conspiracy to keep boy bands from getting popular again.

Looking back on it, it was probably just a conspiracy to stop having to play music videos at all anymore.

Hahah. I still remember my sister buying the whole set of NKotB dolls, wonder if they're still in the house so they can go on eBay for way too much cash and the comforter... oh yes I will not let her forget that comforter.

We were both too old for BSB, although I did really like Savage Garden's first album. I'm amazed that as far as my memory goes, there were relatively minor wanks scattered in where I was at in that fandom. o.o
