TF2 is free, cue the rage
This week, Valve has been releasing the Über Update for Team Fortress 2. This culminated in the long-anticipated Meet the Medic video. It's awesome, go watch it.

And that wasn't all. It has been announced that Team Fortress 2 will now be free to play. Not just for a weekend. Forever.

I could go on for days linking all the angry threads on Valve's forums, so here are a couple other places people are mad:

There's already a plug-in to block free-to-play users from joining your server.

I've been all up in arms about my favorite MMO (City of Heroes) also going F2P this week. But this? Meh.
(I do also own TF2, so that means I'll be getting a "Premium" membership there.)
I think the difference may be that what is egregious misbehavior and an impediment to immersion and roleplaying in an MMO is merely typical gameplay in a fast-spawning, non-persistent, PVP-focused team FPS. Different games, different genres, different expectations.

I'm actually really pleased with CoX going free, because I don't know anyone in-game, am insecure about joining roleplay groups, and have been trying to drag a friend into it with promises of "you'll get to blow bad guys up and/or rob banks, and you can fill in your own witty repartee!"

I don't know why, but this is the funniest thing I've read today. Perhaps because geek rage over a company deciding to give away free stuff just strikes me as silly*.

Or the hearts.

* Okay, if I'd bought the game recently, I might be a little put out that they dropped the price right after I purchased it.

Yeah, I was the tiniest bit put out on that last bit, but then I noted (1) it's been a year, I just haven't played it so much, and (2) I get the Premium perks, which are nice. So I'm down with it.

Love the new video, too.

Pretty much that. It just further affirms my suspicion that nerds will find a way to complain about anything. And I say that as someone who is unashamedly a nerd.

I'm reminded of all the LJ wank back when they got rid of the invite system and made it so anyone could get an account. So many people upset, even kind of devastated, that their exclusive internet citadel was going to be overrun by the masses.

And you know what? LJ did change. It got BETTER. Because even though more people did make for more asshats, trolls, and all-around whiners, this was more than made up for by the fact that more people meant MORE INTERESTING CONTENT.

So although I can kinda sympathize with the sort of regretful/sad feeling that come when anything you love undergoes some unexpected and significant change, I can still giggle over the lol HUGE OVERREACTION since it's like, no one took away anything from them. It's more like getting an ugly tacky sweater for Christmas- maybe it's not possible to get any good out of it, but hey, at least no one is the worse off, right?

Personally, I think this is great. Now the friends I've been trying to drag on board have no more excuses to not play it. And the douchebags will find themselves banned from most of my favorite servers anyway because said servers do not put up with any shit from anyone.

also ffffffffffffffff oh my god meet the medic man I would play Medic a hell of a lot more if I got to burst out of spawn accompanied by doves and dramatic choral music

I played Dungeon Fighter Online for a while because it was Free To Play.

After a few thousand dollars, I gave the game up.

Proud owner of TF2 since 2007 here. Can't wait to play this brand new update :3

My favourite response so far on the anti thank you post. Also, that plug-in is so not cool. If Valve decides to block it from working, I guess we'll be seeing round 2 of this whining fest.

Needless to say, I hope they block it. I'm contrary like that.

Oh the whining! It's so classic.

Actually, I think I might give TF2 a try. I haven't played a computer game since SimFarm (I loved it, but soon learned not to put up barns; the cows would go in and never come out and since you couldn't put feed IN the barns, they starved to death in there. Argh! Also, strawberries were the perfect crop. But I digress.)

Since I'm out of work and my unemployment has run out, I need a cheap/free distraction and this looks like fun!

So yeah, I'll be one of those know-nothing n00bs out to ruin their fun ;-)

I was all prepared to get upset about TF2 going free about three weeks after I bought the game for $20, and then I signed in and saw I got a free hat for having paid to play. All the frothing rage I was working up in my mind turned to "OOH! HAT!"

I think I'm Valve's target market.
