Wait for it...
Cynthia Eden, a paranormal romance/suspense author, has a problem: her professional work has been plagiarized. At length. Word for word. By a Twilight fan.

I was alerted that a person using the online name of Misconception76 had posted a story called The Devil’s Dance on fanfiction.net. (Here’s a link for you:  http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7129614/1/The_Devils_Dance).  At the beginning of her work, she includes this disclaimer:

“The Twilight Series character names belong to Stephanie Meyer. No copyright infringement is intended.”

You see, she’s renamed my characters Edward & Bella.  My SSD Agent Kenton–he’s Edward. My tough female firefighter? She’s Bella.

She changes the names, acknowledges that she’s using them from the Twilight books, and then Misconception76 goes ahead to use my entire Deadly Heat story.  She changes the POV (using “I” instead of 3rd person), but everything else is the same. For pages and pages and pages.

She adds comments at the beginning and end of each chapter–talking about how hard it is to write. How characters can be difficult.

Well, search/replace can be pretty tough on the ctrl+H fingers.

The story has been pulled after about 200 complaints; Smart Bitches added, "And the fanfic rip off was so good that folks made (and then have since removed) Bella-as-a-firefighter fan art. The reviews were all positive until the plagiarism was spotted." As of this writing, Misconception76 has not yet replied to Cynthia Eden's PMs, but she has explained herself:

"It was an experiment with a friend of mine."

From the comments on Eden's blog:

Bullshit. Sorry, but utter bullshit. An experiment? No – that’s jail time. What was she gonna do next?Rob a liquor store to see if she got caught as an experiment? NO!

Two things that jumped out at me about this: 1. this person does not know the sordid history behind "social experiments" and 2. why a liquor store? It's so oddly specific.

I'll admit that I used to do the same thing when I was younger; taking passages from books, rewriting them, playing around with existing texts, breaking down action scenes to see how they worked, imagining different versions, etc., but thankfully I had the good sense to use them as exercises only and never share them with anyone.

It was an experiment with a friend of mine. Her mom is totally addicted to the site, and it made me wonder. How many people actually copy other stories and claim them as their own. Well, now I know. Probably not many at all.

Not only is "experiment" a lame excuse, the "experiment" can't possibly test what she claims she was testing for.

I could see someone sick of ripoffs doing this for the lulz, posting a very clearly ctrl+f/replace'd version of a published ebook to ffnet and seeing how long it took them to get caught/be forced to reveal the ruse, and seeing how many positive comments they got-- but I don't think that this person is quite that self aware.

You know, the next time I see someone try to pass off bullshit as a social/psychological experiment, I'm going to demand to see the the consent forms and the paperwork from the board of ethics that approved their little study. Then I'll demand a copy of the research paper and pick at their shitty methodology

Dammit, if I have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to do a social experiment, so do they. THERE ARE RULES, DAMMIT. YOU ARE BREAKING THEM.

Makes sense to me. Previously, the quantity of copied and claimed stories online was simply unknown. But the moment she took her experiment down, the number became x - 1.

For the next step I would propose pasting their names into an applicable arithmetic problem so that Bella-and-Edward-as-graduated-Mathematicians can solve the equation.

Well, of course! All she SAID was that she wasn't going to rip off Stephanie Meyer's fiction! So everybody else is fair game.

anyway, allow me to write a story.

“The Twilight Series character names belong to Stephanie Meyer. No copyright infringement is intended.”

Mickey Mouse gripped the lightsaber in his hands as his eyes narrowed at Sauron.
"I'm getting tooo old for this shit," he said.
