Brief Update in the World of Doctor Who Twitter Wank
It appears that the Blogtor Who Twitter scandal, previously dubbed "MacRaegate" with absolutely no legitimacy whatsoever, has ended without fanfare.

Meanwhile, as reported here, the British Science Fiction Association has issued an apology to Stephen Moffat, current showrunner of Doctor Who, for an offensive tweet made by one of its members. The tweet can be read here, with Moffat's response here. (You can see a few more of his responses further up in the time stream.)

Doctor Who and Twitter - it just doesn't mix.

Well, damn, MacRae's tweet appears to have been deleted. Did anyone get caps?

Not sure what you mean. All of the MacRae-related tweets are in this thread: http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1279852.html. They all look like they're still there?

...Huh, that's different. When I first clicked on this, Twitter told me it had been deleted. Now it's working fine.

Just so you know it's not just you, I had the same thing happen.

Does everybody get this...?

Depends. Was it modified by "shit-slinging" or "common cat-fighting?"

Does anyone know the circumstances behind the Moffat thing? He seems to be stuck in the 70's/80's where sexism is concerned, but I would have though "Massive Cunt" was a bit strong. Then again, I don't keep up with the in's and out's of what everyone is up to.

As far as I can tell, that nine_below person just doesn't like him. It didn't seem to be connected to anything or in response to anything. Just a random "this guy is a c*t"

If you read nine_below's following tweets regarding the comment, it seems like it's supposed to have something to do with Moffat's sexism. But it was pretty damn out-of-the-blue.

Oh, so it is a sexism thing? Right. Because using the word cunt as a pejorative isn't sexist at all. O_o

Of course it isn't! I mean, reducing someone to female genitalia with all the implied baggage when that insult is used is completely enlightened when you're calling someone out on their sexism!

(And I'll be cleaning up. I'm just a bit touchy about this subject after some asshat in PostSecret decided to call a secret-maker a cunt for...wishing she was black. Which, admittedly, was appropriative, but seriously?)

I just about had to clean up myself, after going back to the twitter and seeing nine_belows tweets that seem to be related.

It seems like nine_below isn't that worried about the sexism, really. It's just that Moffat gets laughs from it.

"Not so much the sexism itself but the delight he takes in his LOLSEXISM schtick."

"Sure, I know it is a divisive word."

I would be inclined to call nine_belows cunts for that, if I didn't find it vile.

Attempting to call someone out on their sexism by calling them a cunt? Yes, this makes perfect sense.

Supposedly, "cunt" isn't very sexist in the UK, but even then, I wouldn't call someone that.

Anyway, when someone throws an insult like that at you, you need to respond with something similar. Example:

"Oh, yeah? Well, you're a urethra!"

"Stop being such a labia majoris."

And then later extend it to other body parts.

"You stupid spleen!"

"Shut up! Stop being such a tonsil!"

Even though I just tossed this together in MUGEN, I'm fairly certain it's actually happened in the comics:

I toss around the perjorative dick (and variations) all the time. Now I'm wondering if I'm sexist for not giving equal time and opportunity to cunt.

Man, nine_below clearly has balls made of steel. I prefer to pretend famous people don't exist on Twitter; I get all anxious when I say something to our local morning DJ on Twitter.

Also: a lot of people retweeted that. Do we hate Steven Moffat? I lose track.

There's a segment of Who fans who think Moffat ruined Who, so they might hate him. As we all know, subjectively ruining your favorite show is certainly grounds for calling someone a c***.

And some of us think is a good writer/showrunner, but prefer to plug our ears whenever he talks. (Seriously, I love Eleven and the Ponds and I thought the 5th season was amazing, but if I never have to read his Twitter/an interview with him again it'll still be too soon.)

Basic rule of thumb is that whoever is in charge of Who at any given moment is guilty of ruining it for someone.

Is it standard practice for an association/organization to apologize for the actions of one of its members? I could understand apologizing for an officer/employee, but apologizing for a member seems odd to me.

Although the tweet came from a personal account, the BSFA committee felt the individual concerned was seen as closely linked to the organisation. They wanted to make clear they did not endorse either the choice of wording or the sentiments expressed in the offending tweet.

My take on it is that they did so because they thought that @nine_below's actions reflected on BSFA, given his/her status within the organization (from the explanation).
