Small doujinshi-buying wank
It’s mostly over, but worth reading for jessioriginal’s overreactions and complete inability to hear the word ‘no’. Many thanks to the anon on wank_report for the links.

Jessioriginal asked for help buying some doujinshi in doujin_market in August. Community member rubicons_closet offers to buy them on her behalf. Despite repeated explanations, Jessioriginal doesn’t understand why she has to send the money first.

A few days ago, jessioriginal made a new post claiming that rubicons_closet agreed to help but is now trying to cheat her. Rubicons_closet and other community members are not impressed (post is now deleted, saved post can be downloaded here, selected comments below):

Rubicons_closet: I don't want this to get ugly, but first off I offered to help you get the books without charging you a proxy-buyer fee. I explained to you many times my policies and why I have them and I also recommended you get tracking or certification for your letter, and yes, there was a long delay in receiving it. I don't know why, but there was.

I explained the hold time and I told you about when it would clear and yet you kept asking to me to rush the payment ahead of the money order clearing which I ended up doing because I wanted this to be done with. I got charged insufficient funds fees twice, once for trying to pay before the money cleared and again because I had to forward the cash to the seller who opened a dispute because of the rushed payment before the funds could reappear back at my bank which would have taken a whole extra week. I told you several times that I did not want to do this because I was afraid that would happen. I have the notices from my bank and Paypal regarding the automatic cancellation fees they charged. The total fees are more than half what you sent to cover the cost of the books.

Since the money has come out of my bank, I won't even have enough to cover my rent which is up this week. I told you I can take the money out of my paycheck next week or so if I have enough and refund you the money back because I know there's no way you want to pay to cover the fees. The only other option is that we negotiate out the fees. I may be willing to cover some of them, but this is a lot of money.

For whatever reason, the seller was fairly adamant about the price she wanted for the books so I wasn't able to negotiate a price much lower than what you asked for and I needed the price to be low enough that I could cover the shipping to you. She is sending out the books tomorrow. I can send you the tracking number if you want if/when I get it.

I don't know what else to do. I asked you to be patient about the funds clearing several times since that was beyond my control.

Imaginenot: To be honest OP you sounds a bit like you have no idea what you are doing. And it sounds like you have never bought doujinshi before. To be it sounds like the person who agreed to help you out has gone above and beyond for you.

I would recommend everyone to read the other post linked to in this entry.

Ariseishirou: From what I read she's already gone out of her way tremendously to help you, which she was under absolutely no obligation to do. If I were you I would just chill. Otherwise, if I were her, I would refund your money and not bother with your books at all at this point ... Your actions and behaviour are completely unacceptable. I would have terminated the contract the moment you tried to get me to accept a money order that does not have my name on it, which is not legal tender.

And then it turns out that jessioriginal has pulled this kind of stunt before:

Vampirenaomi: I'm not one bit surprised that this happened. I regret that I didn't comment on your original post to share my misgivings about this whole deal. Maybe rubicons_closet wouldn't be in so much trouble then.

For those reading this comment, here's my little contribution to this mess. I and jessioriginal used to have each other added on MSN because we had read a few of each other's fanfics. She contacted me out of the blue the day she made her original post and asked if I could buy her the doujins this whole thing is about. I said no because I don't do things like that for strangers and because I'm in Europe, so she wouldn't have been able to pay me back with a money order.

I mentioned to her that I had recently had a transaction with the seller she was having trouble with and that I had experienced no problems. She then pressured me into contacting the seller on her behalf and vouching for her. I said no repeatedly because it made me uncomfortable to lie to the seller and claim that I was a friend of jessioriginal, but eventually I gave in and did it.

I received a very polite reply from the seller, saying that the problems between her and jessioriginal were between the two of them. I thought that was the end of it, but jessioriginal kept bugging me into harassing the seller even more. Unfortunately I didn't save our MSN conversation, but she explicitly asked me to lie to the seller to make her look better.

That was the point when I blocked her from MSN. I'm really sad to see that the situation has now developed to this. I have never in my life dealt with a person who is this incapable of taking no for an answer and seeing things from anyone else's perspective than hers.

The mod deleted the post but included screencaps in a community housekeeping post made two days later. There has been no news on whether the issue has been resolved. (I tried to upload the screencaps to an image hosting site but had no luck, so I placed them on Megaupload as backup.)

jessioriginal sounds like a pretty pushy scam artist to me. What's really saddening is that rubicons_closet has taken some serious financial hits and she's still willing to come through. Sheesh, a lesser and more bitter-minded person would have spent quite a while figuring out exactly how to make jessioriginal's life hell for this.

Or just said "screw it" and kept Jessi's money to offset the fees that this fiasco's accrued.

Jessi had darn well be careful. Otherwise she's going to *Takes of glasses* cross the Rubicon.

Please don't hate me.

Yeah, after the "lie to the bank about who you are to cash my money order" suggestion, I would have been all "LOL NO", and I was pretty surprised [info]rubicons_closet didn't.

I think not giving her the doujin and just refunding money like it was suggested is a good plan, since it looks like it would piss [info]jessioriginal right the hell off.

Like many of the original commenters, I'm wondering how she manages to be over 21 and not have a bank account; that makes me highly suspicious. And just shouting the same thing over and over again doesn't make it true, as most of us had learned by the age of four.

Of course, the fact that some people never learn it is what makes f_w the truly epic comm that it's always been!

Mine was that she had one, but that bringing her bank into the transaction would make it harder to pull her money out from under Rubicon once the books were in the mail.

I actually had a friend who, at least up until when I lost touch with her when we were about 23-24, her father was in charge of her bank account. He would withdraw from it for her and make deposits, even after she started working, and just generally kept her dependent on him.

Though I'm also not discounting the theory that she just didn't want to use her real name.

It's actually super common for people, especially poor people, not to have bank accounts. I truly doubt that's her problem, though. If you can afford $70 of doujinshi, you can probably afford to go to open a bank account.

If you have too little cash, it's actually difficult to open an account or keep one. Service charges can actually devour your funds.

pffff that'll learn me to skim comment threads.

But yeah. Couple friends of mine actually have had their accounts zero out because of service charges and bullshit chipping away at their cash.

All of that is true - Bank of America are notoriously vultures. I've had all of that happen to me when I was with them, which is why I ended up closing my account.

PNC is actually good - at least in my experience. Then again, I've never overdrafted, and the way I use my account I've never had charges (although if I wrote more checks it would be an issue). Local banks also tend to be pretty nice to their customers.

I've mainly had a really good time with PNC. Wells Fargo was a nightmare, Bank of America was a disaster (I've been at PNC for about eight year now, but I'm from Arizona and had accounts at Wells Fargo and PNC at once for a few years). Now that I don't have to worry about a $35 dollar overdraft on a two-dollar cup of Italian soda anymore, PNC and I get along very well.

Agreed on PNC, especially because I just found out that since my account overdraft was less than $5 when all my transactions had settled for the day, that I won't be charged an overdraft fee. Which is awesome because I'd be well and truly screwed otherwise.

I didn't have one until I was 23 due to losing my birth certificate in a house fire three days before I turned 18. Bank wouldn't let me open an account without three forms of id, including a birth certificate, and I couldn't pick up my birth certificate without having two forms of id, such as my school id card and a bank card.

Took me years to find someone who understood the crazy situation and give me my damn birth certificate. Which I now keep in a locked fire proof box.

There's a lot of people out there who want to buy doujinshi but never actually realize what you have to do to transfer the cash and what is not acceptable to say to a seller.

Money orders from people you don't know=bad juju. Paypal has saved my butt several times. Most recently when I paid a transhipper to ship my new betta fish to me after they clear customs, and she lost the record of my payment! Fortunately we'd used Paypal so it was easy to confirm that I had paid. That was accidental (when a transhipper has shipments in they have to process and ship hundreds of fish at a time, minor screw ups happen), but it also makes it much harder for a scammer to operate... which is why they prefer money orders.

Yeah. Somehow a CD I pre-ordered had some problems -- there was a weird Paypal glitch* through Bandcamp -- and me being able to show the artist (or her tech people) my Paypal records meant that I got my music.

(* I still don't know what happened; the Paypal to Bandcamp.com transfer and the bank to Paypal transfer went through, but days apart, and the artist couldn't see the former. I really hope the artist got her money, since I got my music.)

I've just been reading the screencaps and the killer for me was when jessioriginal was all "MY MOM IS A LAWYER" -

Uh-huh. Sure.

*snerk*

Whoops, sorry. Hit post too soon.

What I also wanted to say is that I can't fathom how jessioriginal seems to be so clueless about basic things like extra fees for package tracking, or the fact that PayPal does levy a fee of about 3% of the transaction cost, or even just basic courtesy.

Oh man, this is a drama vortex. I feel for rubicons_closet. I started reading that first thread where she offered help and saw Jessioriginal's incoherent replies and it pinged all my red-alert sensors. I think after repeatedly having to explain basic concepts such as what name could be on the money order, I would have just said, "You know, I don't think I can do this right now. Sorry!"
