To be charitable, modern teenaged boys might put more weight on 'real sex' = 'penetration of a crotch-hole with a penis', and the narration may reflect the character's view of virginity, rather than the author's view.

On the other hand, I'm not terribly inclined to be charitable towards the author right now.
