Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:baleetion, fandom: doctor who, sockpuppets, yay screencaps!

Over in Doctor Who fandom, it seems like Doctor/Rose fic writer [info]jeprdyfrndly (aka Victoria Lane-Lyton), BFF of fellow Doctor/Rose fic writer [info]amberfocus, has a serendipitous life. She met her gorgeous husband, also a Doctor Who fan, when he saw her reading a Doctor Who book in a cafe. They had a lovely wedding (the groom's cake even had a Doctor and Rose on it!), went on a European honeymoon that included several Doctor Who-themed locations (London, Cardiff, and Barcelona), and settled into domestic bliss and financial security (he owns a coffee shop; she has access to a trust). Then she got pregnant despite two kinds of birth control, and had twin girls (she herself is a twin, and there's a history of twins in her family). She's a stay-at-home mum now, but her husband hired a high-school girl to help out by coming in for three hours every day after school to cook, clean, and mind the twins.

A few days ago, she posted a picture of her adorable babies.

The only problem? Those aren't her kids. (According to the metadata, the picture is from 2006. In fact, the girls in that picture are two years old; Victoria says her twins are less than ten months old and are small for their age.)

Huh. That's weird. Why would she post a picture of someone else's kids and claim them as hers?

And for that matter, why would aforementioned BFF [info]amberfocus leave a positive comment if they're someone else's kids, considering she probably knows what they look like, since she saw them in person last month?

On closer inspection, [info]amberfocus is involved in a lot of the major events of [info]jeprdyfrndly's life. They beta (and even rec!) each other's fic. [info]amberfocus introduced her to LJ. She went to Victoria's wedding (but oh no, she forgot her camera, and Victoria's awful private about pictures on the internet, so you'll never see that Doctor/Rose cake topper, sorry :(). She made Victoria take that fateful pregnancy test, and went to an ultrasound with her. (ETA: She also kept everyone updated when when Victoria went into labor early and was kept in hospital for treatment, and announced the babies' birth. According to a mousie on [info]who_anon, the names "Lily" and "Iris" are a common trope in D/R babyfic.)

Victoria and her husband even have their own Facebook profiles. (Isn't it amazing how much they look like Billie Piper and Kellan Lutz?)

All evidence points towards [info]jeprdyfrndly and her entire backstory (and her fic, too) being the work of [info]amberfocus (something that some people have suspected but before now had no proof of).

The big question, though, is WHY go to all that trouble of creating an elaborate sockpuppet if the most self-serving thing you're going to do is rec your own fic?

Deepest thanks to the mousies of [info]who_anon who first posted about this and did most of the work (and if things are deleted, caps are here and here, as well as in in more recent comments, which I can't link to directly because I can't get into LJ right now.)

ETA1: Screencaps showing amberfocus and jeprdyfrndly have the same IP address. (thanks, [info]minibalrogmum!)

ETA2: And so the backpedaling begins! She was trying to protect her own privacy...by using a picture of someone else's kids.

ETA3: [info]jeprdyfrndly has been deleted. [info]amberfocus says she is the victim of photoshopping bitches and flounces.

I wonder if this is just the early stages, and there's more crazy planned, and we just got this too soon.

A premature ejaculation, as it were.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Everyone's talking about how boring and bland and half-hearted this sockpuppeting is. Well that's obviously because she was caught before one/both of the twins/the husband caught a horrible, terminal illness!

I know. I feel like, given a few more months to germinate, this could have blossomed into a wonderful rose of terrible diseases, horrible tragedies and perhaps capping off with a woeful tale of pseuicide.

I think you might be right. I mean, imagine if someone had caught Ms. Scribe during her early days, the wank report would probably look similarly innocent to this one.

I snooped around and found matching IPs on them. Take a look at the screencaps here.

Well, well, well. That certainly suggests sockpuppetry quite strongly.

Whoops! I'm guessing this post is about to get a hasty ETA about how [info]amberfocus happened to be staying over on that date?

Count me in on the "Surprised she wasn't trying to milk more out of this." group.

Though if anything the reactions of some of her friends to her ETAs make me think she could still pull off a pity party for her terminally ill loved one in the future and still get what she wants.

You think she would at least know what babies look like at ten months.

Things I Cannot Fathom:

Why do these people think twins must be part and parcel of The Perfect Fantasy Life(tm)? I imagine my mother would like to have words with them. I distinctly remember the amount of grey hair my mother developed trying to assembly-line diaper two babies and my two-year-old brother.

I think this is as close to a flounce as we may see out of Amber:

text, in case of disappearance:

It's amazing what you can do with photoshop.

It's also amazing what you can do with bitchiness.

Not once have I ever been mean to a single soul here, but three times I've been singled out for this crap. Right now...I am thisclose to deleting my journal and walking away from this fandom. Or at least from LJ. But my mother taught me to never do anything in anger, so I am waiting for at least a little bit to decide.

As it is, I'm going on hiatus from here. I don't have the energy for it. I'm sure some people will consider that "proof," but you know what? Screw 'em. Yeah, I don't feel like being nice anymore, so wank away. When I write I will put it on Teaspoon. Thank you to the supportive ones. I tried. I really did. Sorry, but I've had enough.

Omg, YES.

I was reading through everything, despairing that the jeprdyfrndly journal had been deleted, but also wondering where it was all leading. Then I saw the, "The only problem? Those aren't her kids" and sat up in my chair. I always love these kinds of twists! I always hear them in that movie trailer voice. "His wife? A horse." "Their son? A sparrow." "Only problem? Those aren't her kids- coming summer 2012!"

EL OH EL! But yes, wow. That's one perfect Who fangirl fantasy right there. Surprised 10 didn't show up as the best man.

Off to read screencaps and revel!

This is extremely creepy but when you think about it, if you were going to create a sock puppet, why not give them the life you yourself always wanted?

Of course, my best friend who got a wonderful job even before graduating, worked for a couple of years before applying (and getting) a PhD scholarship to further study something she'd always dreamed of studying, and then met her boyfriend (who bears a vague resemblance to Chris O'Dowd, you know, dreamy but in a totally approachable manner) who she moved in with after two years of dating, by which point she'd finished her doctorate and got another, even more wonderful job that left enough money at the end of each month for her and her boyfriend to travel the world. You know, that best friend? She is of course completely real.

Completely real, and actually quite flawed, because her boyfriend is adorably messy and she likes to sleep in late. See? Completely real!

Victoria (aka jeprdyfrndly) has gone into labor. She's only at week 35 so they are hoping to stop the contractions and give the twins a little more time in the womb. Please keep her in your thoughts today.

This right here would've been enough for me to suspect something. Since she's pregnant with twins they should have been expecting her to deliver around this point. Not that she necessarily SHOULD have, but it wouldn't have been a surprise - 35 weeks is just about average, in fact possibly rather late, for a twin birth. I'll admit I might be misinformed - I'm going by a coworker who had twins at the same time I was pregnant with my son a couple of years ago, and so we talked constantly about what we were going through. Her adjusted due date was for somewhere around 34 to 36 weeks and when she hadn't gone into labour by 37 weeks, they induced her.

Again, sorry if I'm just a misinformed know-it-all, I'm just going by one person's experience. Still, I find it really amusing that she tried to create realistic drama by not overdoing it, and by doing that basically created an entirely normal, par for the course non-dramatic birth story and all her panic and "they're trying to stop the contractions" sounds over the top and silly.

But I was expecting to find out that the local high school girl was using Victoria's computer to troll people or something. Such well-behaved sock puppets, sigh. ;)

The big question, though, is WHY go to all that trouble of creating an elaborate sockpuppet if the most self-serving thing you're going to do is rec your own fic?

I know someone who did this. (Well, is still doing this, if we're honest.) She's never tried to scam for anything more than sympathy or congratulations, but you know what? When I realized I'd been taken in, it hurt. I had once considered her a friend, but after we'd parted on bad terms and I realized how much she had lied about everything, it was probably more painful than the fight that had ended our friendship.

I think it's all about a drive to be popular, so she created a compelling personal story for herself. I suspect that a lot of what she says about herself is based on the truth, but I doubt a lot of the details. It seems like this person has done the same thing, giving herself a life that many would envy. I wouldn't be surprised if some of it is true, but I wouldn't dream of trusting the details.

Because RL is boring, and she doesn't look like Billie Piper, isn't married to a coffee-shop-owning Doctor/Rose fan, and doesn't have twins or an au pair or whatever else?

I suppose I don't really mind people living out imaginary lives on the internet; it used to be one of the things the internet was for. If nobody's hurt by it or giving them money and so on, of course. No fund raisers, no pseudicide, etc etc.
