Aww, Baby's First Wank
It's not even out yet, and Star Wars: The Old Republic is already cutting it's teeth on it's first batch of spooge.

This particular one is about DPS meters. For those of you that don't play MMOs, DPS meters count the damage you do per second in a given fight. Some of the more advanced ones also track how much damage you take, how many times you stopped an enemy before it could finish doing something horrible to you or someone else, how much you get hit, and how much healing a healer does. All in real-time that you can squint down at and crow over in the middle of a fight. "HEY GUISE I'M TOPPING THE DPS METERS YAY oh crap I died because I was busy bragging."

The developers of TOR apparently put up a poll at some point, asking for people's opinions of DPS meters and whether they should be added to the game, ether as in-game meters or as third-party addons.

It turns out that everyone has Opinions about this. And those opinions are... passionate.

Many people are quite hopeful that DPS meters will never be implemented. After all, they reason, in other MMOs the DPS meters are used to deride and mock average players as often or more than they're used to help truly bad ones.

Others, cite them as utterly necessary for effective raiding, and despair at the thought of living without them.

Then there are these guys:

WHEN YOU SUCK... Someone is going to let you have it. Because in an MMORPG, we are spending money to play with you. WHEN YOU SUCK.. Dude.. You suck. And it affects our game.

There WILL be addons after launch. There WILL be a DPS meter.

When you SUCK you will be called on it. Flamed for it. Trolled for it. It will be posted, rubbed in your face.. And THEN you will be group kicked.

And here is the kicker.. Without a cross server dungeon finder.. Everyone on the server will know pretty much everyone. Especially everyone that is bad. After that, you will be forced either to pay to have a character name change, or to move to a different server.. Because nobody will group you with them for anything.

Some of you guys need to wake up. I understand that this is KOTOR 3 for a lot of people.. But for most of us, this is an MMORPG.

(Which was answered with a quite pithy "There I am thinking a meter would be a good idea, then I read this and fully understand why people don't want them. ::rolleyes::")

Others advocate solutions such as post-fight log parsers, DPS meters on training dummies only, etc. Bad analogies are made, people miss each other's points by a mile, and everyone takes a turn on the "guess what the Devs actually meant" wheel.

All in all, a tasty little introductory wank for a game that's not due out for another month.

Dark Legacy Comics covered this for WoW.

Aww, baby's first wank, and it's about addons. That's actually a genuine relief.

I've been considering getting back into an MMORPG (Rift), but this just reminded me of how much happier I've been without one.

I like Rift because I can solo fairly easily. I'm in a guild mainly to have a place to stash my crafting shit.

I played Rift, and while I was in a guild, I'm mostly a solo player and the game is very easy to play by yourself. Trion is trying very hard to make the game just as fun for the solo'ers as it is for those in active groups. The only reason I don't play anymore is lack of money :(

Even if they don't have the DPS I'm sure people will find another way to measure e-peen.

True. But taking away their ruler so they have to measure in soda cans wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. XD

Gearscore.

I hated that fucking addon. Not least because it kept breaking the game for people post-patch and they'd inevitably come whining to the CS Forum about OMGBLIZZBROKEIT!

Gee, I can't imagine why anybody would be opposed to adding DPS to this kind of gaming environment.

There are legitimate uses for a DPS meter, from anything to checking out personal progress to seeing who is literally just following and looting.

This person, though, is a giant pyrium toolbox whom I cannot even trade in for cogwheels.

EVE Online is legendary for being a harsh environment where the weak and sick are weeded out through its bloodthirsty players and confusing UI, but the most you see of that is "omg shitfit" and "I TOLD YOU NOT TO UNDOCK IN THAT and then you did" on killboards.

These guys need to cry moar.

Everyone on the server will know about your low dps and shun you? How small is this server? Or is he planning on having a forum of assholes like they do on Tichondrius?

I am so not tech-savvy (or, um, strategy-savvy), so even if they include it I will have no idea what is going on.

(I've been playing MMOs for over ten years, and my playstyle is still only a half-step up from button-mashing.)

As long as MMOs exist, there will be DPS meter wank. The irony of it is, those like the charming fellow above who would use them hatefully against others don't realize that the majority of the player base will be much more likely to dropkick him and his ilk from a group and let the server know what an ass he is, than the other way around. It won't take long before only those like him will group with him, but he won't see it for what it is, all he'll think is "dude yeaaaah, we're so fucking badass...how come we can't pick up a tank/healer? What the fuck is wrong with these people that they won't play with us? Fuckin' noobs! This server sucks!"

See, it's crap like this that makes me not want to play TOR. I love Knights of the Old Republic. I know the story of the first two games forwards and backwards, I've written scads of fanfiction, I read the comics, I have costumes of the characters. I don't, and will never accept TOR as KOTOR 3 (on artistic principle- you can't finish a trilogy with a different type of game set 300 years later; it's a completely different entity by then), but I was, and may still be willing to give it a chance.

But for crying out loud, I don't want to have to share my KOTOR experience with asshats.

Of course, I can't even try to enjoy the game until they fix whatever bug is causing it to make my graphics drivers freak out. I have a beautiful new graphics card, there should be absolutely no problems with it. Sad beta tester was very, very sad.

In short: I'm going to keep playing the first two games, where the graphics work and my world is uncluttered by douchebags.
