Aww, Baby's First Wank It's not even out yet, and Star Wars: The Old Republic is already cutting it's teeth on it's first batch of spooge. This particular one is about DPS meters. For those of you that don't play MMOs, DPS meters count the damage you do per second in a given fight. Some of the more advanced ones also track how much damage you take, how many times you stopped an enemy before it could finish doing something horrible to you or someone else, how much you get hit, and how much healing a healer does. All in real-time that you can squint down at and crow over in the middle of a fight. "HEY GUISE I'M TOPPING THE DPS METERS YAY oh crap I died because I was busy bragging." The developers of TOR apparently put up a poll at some point, asking for people's opinions of DPS meters and whether they should be added to the game, ether as in-game meters or as third-party addons. It turns out that everyone has Opinions about this. And those opinions are... passionate. Many people are quite hopeful that DPS meters will never be implemented. After all, they reason, in other MMOs the DPS meters are used to deride and mock average players as often or more than they're used to help truly bad ones. Others, cite them as utterly necessary for effective raiding, and despair at the thought of living without them. Then there are these guys: WHEN YOU SUCK... Someone is going to let you have it. Because in an MMORPG, we are spending money to play with you. WHEN YOU SUCK.. Dude.. You suck. And it affects our game. There WILL be addons after launch. There WILL be a DPS meter. When you SUCK you will be called on it. Flamed for it. Trolled for it. It will be posted, rubbed in your face.. And THEN you will be group kicked. And here is the kicker.. Without a cross server dungeon finder.. Everyone on the server will know pretty much everyone. Especially everyone that is bad. After that, you will be forced either to pay to have a character name change, or to move to a different server.. Because nobody will group you with them for anything. Some of you guys need to wake up. I understand that this is KOTOR 3 for a lot of people.. But for most of us, this is an MMORPG. (Which was answered with a quite pithy "There I am thinking a meter would be a good idea, then I read this and fully understand why people don't want them. ::rolleyes::") Others advocate solutions such as post-fight log parsers, DPS meters on training dummies only, etc. Bad analogies are made, people miss each other's points by a mile, and everyone takes a turn on the "guess what the Devs actually meant" wheel. All in all, a tasty little introductory wank for a game that's not due out for another month. Post a comment in response: |
