Current mood:feisty!
Entry tags:but i'm not like that!, fandom: due south, i know it because of my learnings, persecution

Someone actually says 'I don't want to appropriate your issues as a Canadian'
Backstory: the ten-year-old Due South Canadian Shack meme is being revived. (You may know it better as the "trapped in a mountain cabin fanfic trope. But sexier. It's a sugar shack.) Why is it a Canadian shack? You'll recall that Constable Benton Fraser's actual home is a shack in the Territories. It's a nice place. So nice that it gets blown up, like, twice.

Anyway.

Staranise is not happy with this. "Shacks" is a bad, bad word for her. "Shacks" are what First Nations people live in. (Please note that reservation houses are often horrible because the Canadian Government is terrible to its people but that is another story.) They belong to poor people. They certainly aren't cabins. That's something entirely different.

She also has no idea what shacks even have to do with the thing she's complaining about. She reveals later on that she avoids Due South, and may be under the impression that the two cops in it are rich, because cops. But that's not going to stop her from having theories.

But the real problem is this: This meme will cause people to think that Canada is an unpopulated wilderness speckled with poor people and their shacks.

I have bad news for her about why she shouldn't worry what people think of Canada/Canadians: No one thinks about us period.

(Also: SHACKS. Better than igloos? y/n?)

Disclaimer: I posted a comment to this, to tell her where Benton lived. Then Ann talked me into posting this here.

Well, everyone knows that real Canadians call it a 'cabane à sucre'.

*flees*

My family has a sugar shack, though I don't know if it's used any more. My grandfather built it so that we could boil down sap when we collected it and made our own syrup. My grandfather's aging though (he'll be 82 this year) so it's harder for him to manage, and his assistants are also aging/absent/disinterested.

I only vaguely remember Benny living in a shack, but he lived a-waaaaaay up north. Northern Canada's pretty different in a lot of ways from, say, Toronto or Ottawa. But people have cottages, and they mean one thing. They have cabins, which mean something slightly different. And they also have shacks.

The whole 'only poor people live in shacks' thing was... extremely gross.

I TOTALLY think about Canadians. Especially if they're playing bouzoukis.

But of course, with all of the Newfoundland and Quebecois music on my playlists, I'm practically Canadian myself. ;D

Also: woo Due South! I really need to watch more of that.

...Oh.

I mean, I get "Our country's representation in most media is inaccurate and insulting!", because that's the also case with my country — and, realistically, MOST countries. But, uh... yeah.

I particular liked the complaint about the exoticised/fetishised representation in Monty Python's Lumberjack Song, and the thread of pearl-clutching about the nasty immoral fictional characters breaking into a fictional someone else's property to survive the cold.

Supernatural, that homage to America, is filmed in Vancouver. Toronto plays New York on a regular basis. One of the things that's unique and delightful about Flashpoint is that they've stopped using clever camera tricks and just admitted: this is Canada. This is Toronto. Things happen here; newsworthy things, story-worthy things, life and death things. We have power and identity and are not just America-lite.

And my country is apparently the go-to place for everything from Soviet Russia and Buenos Aires to Ancient Rome and Generic Ruritania but I can't think of a movie where it appeared as itself. Until now I thought this was funny, but from now on I think I'll also rage against the evil American film industry robbing us of our identity (or something).

The show is about a Mountie who comes to Chicago on the trail of the killers of his father with a half deaf half wolf who reads lips in three languages and a Chicago detective or two as his sidekicks. And it's the authenticity of the setting of fanfic that gets them?

Reservation housing here in the US can be pretty shitty, too.

A co-worker of mine joined a group that was going to build new houses on a res, but at the first meeting she attended, they were all lamenting that the Indians wouldn't help and weren't friendly to them. She quickly sussed out that they were a group of Nice White People who hadn't even bothered to ask the Indians what kind of houses they wanted, or even if they really wanted the houses in the first place.

So I was doing stastics! again (because why not) and one of the complaints is that this is just being used for porn, right?

Guess how many stories currently in the challenge collection (as of this comment) are rated E for explicit (that is, have porn in them).

...I knew there was something rining a little bit wrong about that description.

Wow, this is a challenge that's just begging for a Tony/Lee fic. (Tanya Huff's Smoke books,)

I'd just like to take a moment to state for the record how happy I am to hear that Canadian Shack fic is being revived. Good times! :D

I was superconfused here because in German, shack and cabin translate to the same thing, plus I thought it was intended as an allusion to "to shack up"? (And then there's the inevitable freudian typo of the "canadian shag meme").

All I can think of when I see the words "sugar shack" is homemade maple syrup and maple candy. I'm just gonna ignore the rest. :)

I've gleaned a few things from this:

1) I have no clue WTF is even going on since this meme was popular before I discovered the internet.

2) I am stoked to find out that other people liked Due South because no one I've talked to have ever heard it.

3) The special snowflake spelling of my name in that original post link has my eye twitching. . .

I know that a lot of people who read Canadian Shack fic are definitely not in it for the Canada: the Canada's just the backdrop, so hey, paint some snowy mountains on a screen and get on with the sex.

New rule: All fic set in Canada must include folk dancing, First Nation art, and a discussion of Quebec sovereignty.

This is all just reminding me of that scene in Canadian Bacon where Rhea Pearlman wakes up, sees a blasted, barren tundra outside and knows immediately that she's been taken to Ottawa.

I saw that on Dreamwidth. My first thought was "Hey, cute, I wonder if have any characters I could pair up in a Canadian shack."

My second thought was "This could go wrong somehow, couldn't it?"

I probably should have reversed the thoughts. Though I'm still tempted to send Henry and Eileen to Canada, poor kids need a break from Silent Hill.
