BRYKE DGAF AND WANT US TO KNOW THEIR SHIPPING PREFERENCES. (aka Legend of Korra shipping wank)
So I've been a little out of the loop in regards to Avatar: The Legend of Korra, aside of... some not very funny incidents on Tumblr. But this one that went on on LJ? Fucking hilarious.

Thanks to Wank Report for it!

Capslock_ATLA makes a post featuring a short clip from Legend of Korra, wherein Aang/Katara grandkids Ikki and Jinora tease Korra (our new waterbending avatar) for maybe kinda sorta liking Mako (her firebending acquaintance). (Here is the clip in question)

aiffe jokingly concludes that Mike and Bryan are apologizing for Zutara (Zuko/Katara) not happening by making Makorra (Mako/Korra) canon. Numerous users disagree. Some disagree vehemently

dietotaku appears to give her opinion.

dietotaku: I DON'T SEE IT AS AN APOLOGY TO ZUTARIANS EITHER, THOUGH. FOR ONE THING, ZUTARIANS SHIP ZUTARA, NOT "ANY FIREBENDER + ANY WATERBENDER." KORRA HAS HER SIMILARITIES TO KATARA AND MAKO TO ZUKO, BUT THEY'RE STILL NOT THE SAME PEOPLE WITH THE SAME STORY ARC, CHEMISTRY, ETC. IF THEY REALLY WANTED TO APOLOGIZE TO ZUTARIANS, THEY WOULD'VE LEFT SHIPPING OUT OF THIS SERIES ENTIRELY, SO THAT NOTHING WAS CANON AND ALL SHIPPERS WERE ON EQUAL GROUND. INSTEAD THEY'RE JUST FUELING A REPEAT OF THE SHIPPING WARS OF THE PAST. I FEEL BAD FOR KORRA/BOLIN SHIPPERS.

dorknessrising questions</a> dietotaku's need for her ship to be canonly plausible.
dorknessrising: IF YOU NEED CANON VALIDATION IN ORDER TO FULLY ENJOY YOUR SHIP, THEN IT'S A SAFE BET YOU AREN'T SHIPPING IT FOR GOOD REASONS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

dietotaku whines about AUs and Death of the Author with a MASSIVE Wall of Text, and concludes with how "It just isn't the saaaaaaame!"

In the meantime, buglarcat offers a helpful suggestion, and saori1f insists that Zutara isn't a crackship.

dietokatu insists that really, she doesn't want an apology from Mike and Bryan and besides Zutara fans write Zutara better anyway. Also Mike and Bryan suck at writing believable romance.

dietotaku: "BECAUSE THEY ALSO SUCK AT WRITING BELIEVABLE ROMANCES."
dorkinessrising: "HOW DOES THAT GIVE THE FANDOM THE RIGHT TO BE RABID ASSHOLES?"
dietotaku: I'LL TELL YOU WHEN YOU CAN COME UP WITH AN INSULT OTHER THAN "RABID ASSHOLE."
dorkinessrising: NAH, I LIKE "RABID ASSHOLE." SIMPLE, YET EFFECTIVE.
dietotaku: NOT REALLY.
dorkinessrising: WHY NOT?
saori1f: SHIPPING IS SERIOUS BUSSINESS, IF YOU HAVEN'T LEARNED THAT BY NOW, IT'LL BE BETTER IF YOU GTFO OF THE INTERNET. BYE!

dorknessrising continues to challenge her and dietotaku doubts dorkness's claim that she is a Zutarian herself. It is then revealed that dorknessrising is actually dietokatu's former Zutarian BFF rachelthedemon (who has since distanced herself from diet and the larger Zutarian fanbase)... and dietotaku's reaction is basically, "YOU BITCH! YOU BETRAYED ME! I'M GOING TO GO BURN OUR FRIENDSHIP BRACELET!".

Meanwhile sadladybug continues to assert that Mike and Bryan are unprofessional jerks. And saori1f bemoans that Makorra will never be as epic as Zutara.

The wank concludes with yukinoomoni expressing mild disappointment that Korra won't be a lesbian.

That's all, folks!

SHIPPING IS SERIOUS BUSSINESS

Oh. My. God.

And they said it without any trace of irony at all.

That's just beautiful. *wipes away tear*

Stuff like this is why I consider shipping to be at best rather silly and at worst a blight upon fandom. (Though the ongoing disaster that is Bleach wank is probably a better example.)

Surely there are better, healthier things to be emotionally invested in than which fictional character(s) is, might, or should be snogging another?

I missed the premire of Korra. ;_; Thankfully, watchcartoonsonline.com has it so when I've finally caught up with MLP: FIM I can start watching Korra. <3

I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY "DEATH OF THE AUTHOR," BUT WHILE WRITING FANON IS GREAT FOR ENJOYING YOUR SHIP, THERE'S ALWAYS THE PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO RESPONDS TO IT WITH "YEAH, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED."(deleted for length)AND ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR FANDOM DEALS WITH VISUAL MEDIA, SEEING YOUR OTP HAPPEN ON-SCREEN IS A LOT MORE SATISFYING THAN READING RETCONNED FIC. DAMMIT I'M REALLY STARTING TO RAMBLE...

TL;DR - IT'S NOT THE SAAAAAAAAAAME *WHINE*

Well at least she admits she's whining. I have to say I completely disagree. Yes people who nag at you endlessly about alterations from canon are annoying, and more often than not ass-holes. No mater what fandom it is nearly every ship I have has been brutally sunk by the canon, mostly by character death. I've found reading, writing, and even just thinking up AUs can be just as, and sometimes more satisfying than canon. Of course for some reason the canon of almost everything I become a fan of just ends up being a launch pad for sending my brain into the endless sea of 'What Ifs'.
YMMV of course I know other people don't feel the same way, and there's nothing wrong with that. But if someone is still hung up about something in canon not going the way years after the series/book/movie/comic/whatever has finished you are taking things way too seriously. Fandom is supposed to be fun, not something that angers, or upsets you calm down, take a walk, have your blood pressure checked, and remember in the end it's not that important.

Things I will never understand: why some fans of non-canon ships think they deserve apologies from the creators for not making their ship canon.

I like to imagine what this list of apologies would look like.

"Okay, we'd like to apologize to people who ship the following relationships:

Aang/Appa
Aang/Azula
Aang/Bumi
Aang/Cabbage Seller
Aang/Firelord Ozai
Aang/Foaming Mouth Guy
Aang/Gran-Gran
Aang/Guru
Aang/Gyatso
Aang/Iroh
Aang/Lion-Turtle
Aang/Jet
Aang/Mai
Aang/Momo
Aang/Painted Lady (though we will just point out that since Katara poses as the Painted Lady, this ship was arguably never sunk)
Aang/Pakku
Aang/Roku
Aang/Sokka
Aang/Suki
Aang/Swampbenders
Aang/Toph
Aang/Ty Lee
Aang/Yue
Aang/Zuko

Appa/Azula
Appa/Bumi..."

Yay, smushnames! I mean, Yay Shippping Wars!

I wonder how they'd handle someone shipping Zuko/Korra in a timetravel AU? And how's that for a smushname, Zukorra. Or maybe Kozu would be better...

I did think up a few other great smushnames, that I may or may not have posted before (I can't remember):

Korra/Bolin = Kolin

Korra/Mako = Koma

Out of a certain roadkill-gawking curiosity, I checked the Legend of Korra shipping thread on AvatarSpirit.net; it had attained two hundred-plus pages before the first episode leaked.

(So how about it, Rowling? You owe the fanbase some leaked character names and outlines for your upcoming grownup novel so the advance shipping wank can commence--and the leftover Harry Potter shipping wank find a new vehicle!)

( my apologies for the length of this... orz. )

I don't get this whole "Zutara" thing. I mean, I never shipped Harry/Hermione, never even saw any real potential for romance between those two, but even "Harmony" has a more solid basis than "Zutara" IMHO because at least Harry and Hermione were best friends pretty much from book one. Zuko and Katara were enemies for more than two thirds of the series.

I watched all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender with an open mind, curious to see if there was a tangible connection between Zuko and Katara. I never really saw it until late in the final season, and even then, it felt less romantic and more platonic to me. There were like two episodes where I thought "Okay, maybe there could feasibly be something there..." but even then, it seemed like it could be interpreted as a platonic relationship too. Zuko was starved for friendship on the whole and was desperate, IMHO, to form some kind of sturdy relationship with the people he had resolved to help. It's no wonder he would want to try and befriend Katara.

Prior to those few moments, it felt like a straight-up hateship, which I have never understood the appeal of. Lasting relationships of any sort simply cannot thrive on a foundation of hatred and hostility. I don't understand how someone can believe that a healthy relationship can survive and even thrive when it is founded upon and fueled by hatred and rage.

I just don't understand how it is that so many people seriously thought that the creators deliberately teased them with their ship, only to sink it. I never saw anything resembling "shipteasing". I saw two young adult characters in the middle of a large-scale conflict who used to be bitter enemies, now struggling to come to a truce solid enough that they could trust their own lives to each other, which is critically important when the stakes are as high as they were.

(I will admit that I have had little respect for most "Zutara" shippers after they demanded an apology from the creators. Excuse me? Since when do the creators of a story owe the fans an excuse just because a certain romance or certain potential plot event didn't happen? The sheer arrogance and entitlement of people to think that the creators of a TV show owe them anything at all is staggering. If the creators had done something legitimately offensive, I could understand wanting an apology. But last I checked, the characters and plot belong to the creators, not the fans. If something doesn't work out the way you want it to, that's too bad, because it's still not your story. If you want it to end a certain way, make a fanfic or a fanvid or whatever to show the ending you want; don't expect the creators to bow to your wishes just because you're one consumer.)

I'm a little hesitant to watch Legend of Korra at all. All this shipping crap I'm hearing about it is kind of killing any excitement I had for the series. The things I enjoyed about Avatar The Last Airbender were its expansive milieu, its complex characters, its amazing storytelling, its tongue-in-cheek humor that didn't overpower the severity of the situations, and the downright-awesome way the fights were choreographed using martial arts and a little creative thinking. I felt that romance really served no purpose in the story at all as a whole, other than to create some sideplots and a little extra friction. Rabid fandom shippers have a way of ruining something for everyone else, so I'm almost afraid to bother watching Korra at all, if the show is going to focus more on romance than the previous series did.

...

I shall shut up now. *slinks off to hide in a corner*

Oh dear.

The ships I liked didn't become canon but guess what? I got over it. I can still ship in fanon ffs.

I'll be i my corner shipping Korra with everything.

My God, they're still going. Even the Harmonians have moved on by this point, haven't they? Lord.

Whenever I see people say "I wish they'd just left canon open" I think
a) I bet you wouldn't be saying that if your ship had become canon and
b) HOW? Should Tenzin just vaguely refer to his mother without ever naming her? Should we meet the head of the fire nation and have them greet Katara in such a way that she MIGHT be related but we can't say for sure? Maybe there could be a really big potted plant in front of any relevant family portraits.

I do have some sympathy for the "it's not the same" feeling when what you think is going to be a canon ship gets sunk, I find it offputting myself. But railing against canon couples existing at all seems like a slight overreaction.
