The National Theatre refuses to condone bootleg recordings of its plays... OMGPERSECUTION!
Moved from [info]clairvoyantwank on grounds of extra wanking and journal bahleetion. Also, because people asked me to.

Context: the National Theatre is one of the UK's most major theatre companies, and one of its most popular (and critically-acclaimed) productions of the last few years was Danny Boyle's version of Frankenstein, which starred Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. In light of the play's popularity (I believe every single night sold out), the NT put on a cinema production of the play, which has so far had an unprecedented TWO runs. There have been rumours in fandom that there'll be a DVD of the play, rumours which were completely scotched a few months back -- basically because the cast said no.

Anyway, thwarted fans = much kerfuffling, and bootleg recordings have been (predictably enough) doing the rounds in fandom -- I know for a fact that there's one of JLM as the Creature, though I don't believe there's one of Cumberbatch in the same role. (Unfortunately.)

SO, naturally, one such thwarted fan, [info]hikarikame, takes it upon herself to write to the NT themselves, asking them to condone aforesaid bootlegs. What she hoped to accomplish I really don't know, but she appears to have been, shall we say, somewhat miffed when the NT was, er, less than enthusiastic about the idea of supporting pirate versions of its own copyrighted material.

I suspected she'd be even less happy when she read her own fandom's reaction to all of this... I turned out to be right! LOTS of passive-aggressive happening, all over the map, as people attempted to bring common sense to bear on the issue. [info]hikarikame has now deleted her journal AND her Tumblr; I have screencaps of her post in Cumberbatchfans, but not of her Tumblr.

Being a theatre-goer in Japan is fun (at least small theatre), because by and large the productions are released on DVD, so after you see it five times in person, you can see it five hundred more on DVD in glorious HD.

That being said, those few productions I loved that were NOT released on DVD really hurt, and it sucks that now I'll never be able to fangirl them with others or show friends how great Random Actor was in this or that role.

STILL. The gall you've got to have to approach the production company directly and ask them to condone bootleg copies..??? Where is the logic?!

Takarazuka fan, by any chance?

And agreed. This person's audacity and lack of understanding kind of blow my mind.

Dude.

As a Ninagawa Yukio fan who's never lucky enough to watch his plays life but has watched them a kazillion times on DVD (Tsukikawa Yuuki all prettied up in a dress will never be less awesome for me) I agree with this so much.

Sometimes when things don't get released in DVDs it hurts me in my soul too. But yeah, did she really think they'll give her their blessing or something?

I can understand the burning need to bootleg. To then blab about it is beyond me though.

The theater brat in me wants to go get creative on hikarikame for not getting that theater is different than TV and is MEANT to be different from TV.

The observer of me finds her entitlement hilarious.

I still can't get past the fact that she keeps claiming that technology's done nothing for theater as a whole while simultaneously complaining about not being able to get a DVD recording of the performance.

I mean, what happened to musical soundtracks? What happened to the film industry practically being an excuse to bring plays to the masses back in its heyday? What happened to that influx of musical-based movies just a few years ago? And back in the '60s? All of those movie theaters across the US that present performances live from Broadway and Lincoln Center for people who live too far or can't afford the tickets? And I'm sure the US isn't the only country that does that. Hell, any Andrew Lloyd Webber fan can own a practically complete collection of his musicals on DVD.

Technology's done nothing for theater my tap dancing, harmonizing behind.

I can't help suspecting that she really wouldn't give a damn about this play if Benedict Cumberbatch weren't in it. Not that it's bad to only care about a play for an actor; I'd do it too. But it takes something away from her zeal for Pure Art.

I'd bet a month's wages on the fact that she wouldn't be interested if not for her beloved Cumberbatch. Which is sad, because it's an excellent play regardless. *seen both versions thanks to NTLive*

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, it sounds like there's not a good/full bootleg version of the play available with Cumberbatch as the creature. I'm betting that has a lot to do with it.

Also, "Art for art's sake!" versus "You'll never be as popular and profitable as these other things!"

Definitely.

So go ahead, NT, enjoy your mediocrity. Your shows will happen, collect their obligatory trophies, and no one will remember them after a year. You may not know what you never had, but go ahead and look at the other fandoms - Sherlock, Doctor Who, Supernatural. Frankenstein, and NT, had a chance, a little play, had a chance at all that, and you gave it up.

This bit here... I'm not even a Brit, hence I don't know that much, but something makes me suspect that the National Theatre can probably exist quite well catering just to people who like to watch theatre in the UK, rather than giving a few Americans who fancy one particular actor DVD's. Is she honestly going to want to watch any previous or future productions if Cumberbatch isn't/wasn't in them?

And as for this:

We’ll write our own plays, make musicals, perform and tell stories ourselves. And better yet, we’ll share it, with everyone, not just the elite upper-class that can afford it.

Yes, you do so. And once you realise that one needs an extensive education (in addition to talent) to do most of these things at the level that theatre company does them at, and even if one manages without that education, it will end up being a full-time job, the desire to actually be paid for said job in order to be able to eat will come quite quickly.

Honestly, it's always non-artists who decide that artists should want to do art without compensation, and the more they declare how much they love the art for itself, the less they seem to be willing to pay for it.

Hmph, clicked the wrong link. The "definitely" refers to the question whether they would have been interested in the play sans Cumberbatch.

I've been to the NT several times - usually sat in a packed house, regardless of whether I'm seeing something experimental or populist. They're doing just fine. I went a few times as a student because they do £10-15 tickets as well for certain shows (I've seen Williams, Shaw and Shakespeare plays there for a tenner each), so the over-priced elitist argument is also *hilarious*.

Their entitlement and lack of knowledge is gloriously facepalm-worthy.

..."Mediocrity"? She is actually defining a theater company that has had Sir Laurence Olivier as the artistic director and which produced the premieres of "Waiting For Godot" and "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" as "Mediocre"?

I guess there weren't enough dance numbers for her or something. (Although, it begs the question that if the NT does such "mediocre" work, why is she all het up about trying to get a DVD of it?)

We do not in any way condone the piracy of recording, both because it is an illegal activity and because it is against the wishes of the artists whose work we represent. I would let you know that if you choose to record, distribute or download the screening of Frankenstein, you are breaking the law and risk legal action.

It’s like they never read my letter.
The thing I find so adorable about rabid piracy advocates is that they have such great difficulty comprehending a universe in which they don't get other people's work for free. Because everyone who disagrees with them clearly can't understand them.

Because here’s the icing on the cake: fandom doesn’t need you. Watching the play without being able to make it fandom is more or less just like reading Mary Shelley’s book. We’ll write our own plays, make musicals, perform and tell stories ourselves. And better yet, we’ll share it, with everyone, not just the elite upper-class that can afford it.

And once the world realizes that they can get everything from us, for free, because storytelling and humanity should not have a price, ever, no one will ever need you anymore.

....And then all art from there on in was terrible and made only by amateurs, because nobody could afford to dedicate their lives to the craft anymore.

Oh god, it's like all of my worst nightmares D8

I think it's worth noting that this whole thing takes on a new and totally creepy light when you consider that the actor playing the Creature is naked for part of the play. I didn't realise that at all until listening to an interview with Cumberbatch just now. Holy shit how hard is it to understand that if someone doesn't want recordings of themself naked passed around you shouldn't do it? No wonder they didn't want there to be a DVD.
