Slash goggles erase characterization OR Doesn't Regnant look like it's missing a letter?
Disclaimer: I have no idea what Grimm is besides a tv show. As well, thanks to [info]ymfaery for showing me this.

Let us away to a kink meme, where there is a prompt: Regnant static static knotting static.

And so, someone asks: "What's a Regnant?"

[info]wicked_witch sez:

I think the whole Regnant thing was created by us, the fans, back in the early days when we didn’t know that much about Renard. (Not that we know all the much now.) It’s what we decided Renard’s creature name was going to be. I believe the first story to feature Renard as a Regnant was actually a fill posted on this meme but has since been moved to AO3. To my knowledge the story is This Isn’t Everything You Are by Macx. I guess it’s more fanon than anything else.

The anon disagrees that it's not popular enough to be fanon, because fanon is done via voting or something now, and [info]thorneofacre joins in to defend the widespread use of Regnant as a species name.

I like this thread for two reasons: One, the Anon keeps busting out charmers like: "i checked it out, but the writing is kind of terrible. thanks for the rec anyway." and Thornofacre eventually claims that expecting IC in slash is just being a sillybilly.

Then the fighting starts about here.

Also, it's rude to be anon in an anon thread.

The moral of the story is something about knotting, but I'm not sure what.

The writers did NOT intend for him to be gay. That is what I meant by saying that slash fiction is always out of character.

What if you write slash fiction about a canon gay or bi character? Ha ha, I've found the solution!

A very typical heteronormative comment. Unless the character is canonically into women (and even then), you can't say that the creator explicitly created the character to be the STRAIGHTEST STRAIGHT WHO EVER STRAIGHTED.

Even canon manwhores can be into other men and still be in-character.

I kind of love how Anon2 thinks that Regnant can't be popular because they've never heard of it, then admits that they don't often read fanfic about the character it refers to.

Also, does anyone know what knotting is? I had assumed from the name Renard that they wanted a fic about a guy getting double-teamed by canids, but now they're saying that everyone involved is human so that theory's out the window.

(I ask fully knowing that I'll probably regret having done so.)

I hate that I know this, but - canine penises (peni? penes?) swell at one end (knot) after orgasm, meaning that if the recipient isn't quick, the penis is stuck for a while (IIRC foxes knot for an hour or so). I assume there is a fanon idea that the vaguely canid Wesen (Blutbaden are The Big Bad Wolves) have this, um, feature.

And now I need several showers, and possibly some gin.

OIC, you didn't realize Grimm is a paranormal tv show about a cop (the Grimm) whose bloodline has the ability, in certain circumstances, to see the creature (Wesen) side of folks who live hidden among regular people. The blutbaden (sp?) is a canon Wesen, the regnant is a fanon one.

Being somewhat, shall we say, knowledgeable about knotting fic (ie, I have read many, many knotting fics :)), I'll throw in my two cents.

[info]caffeine_fairy has already covered the basic idea, that it's stories about humans whose penises/sex organs have animalistic traits. Sometimes the stories are in canons where the human in question has a wolf/dog form (Lupin and Sirius in Harry Potter) and sometimes they aren't.

Knotting fic is really, really popular in several fandoms right now (Notably Supernatural, Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: First Class, Teen Wolf, and Avengers). The idea has been kicking around fandom for a long time, but the current trend (as can so much else) can be blamed traced back to the Supernatural fandom. The Fanlore Wiki has a good overview of knotting fic in fandom.

Knotting fic also tends to go hand-in-hand with stories that deal with Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics. I think nora_bombay summed it up pretty well in a primer she wrote about A/B/O stories: "Think of it as pack dynamics as written by individuals who have never spent time with actual wolves."

Fanlore also has an Alpha/Beta/Omega entry.

So, yeah, probably more than you wanted to know. :) But it's like any other genre. I've read some amazingly horrible stories, but also some stories that take the idea and do amazing stuff with it.

I was going to make a perfectly logical, and possibly humourous, reply. But then my brain did a weird thing and it suddenly occured to me that Harley Quinn and Joker are a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast if the Beast was not in fact a good person. IDEK.

I have no idea what that said*. I suspect I am out of touch with the fandom lingo these days.

Not sure if that's good or bad.

*If this were a more furry fandom, I'd be pretty sure what "knotting" was.
