50 Shades of Legal Fuck Ups
This is a two-parter. Choose your favourite half.

This all starts over on Fandom Lounge (sort of!), where it is revealed that author, Casea Major first made a novel based off 50 shades and just as we found out about this joy she removed all traces of it from the internet.

Why did she do it? Well, it may have something to do with how EL James (author of 50 Shades) recently cease and desisted someone's lingerie parties that were themed after her books.

Actual quote: EL James’ agent Valerie Hoskins said the legal letter was not personal, adding: “You can’t just hijack something someone else owns.”

Now we enter into the next phase!

Cleolinda tweets about it, because that's what Cleo does.

Enter: AJA

See, lately Aja's blogger for the Daily Dot.

Anyway, she decides to write an article and tweets Cleo about the article:

Cleo does not respond.

So Aja tweets again:

Wait, what's Cleo talking about? What official account? WELL. Included on Aja's post, was this screencap:

Sounds hilarious, right? It's a photoshop though. If only because if it HAD happened Cleo would have it bronzed on her wall. But that's okay, because Aja wouldn't claim a photoshop was rea--oh, she did. Because that's how you Journalism in Aja land.

I'm not being unkind, she actually admits it:

Okay, she admits it AFTER Cleo keeps asking her about it (read these bottom up):

If the image isn't working, she says this about how she factchecks: "you know i was afraid of that, i tried to find it yesterday too & didn't confirm before we went to press. should have asked you!"

As of this post, Aja has kept a link to the photoshop in case she can magically verify it.

Aja? Seriously? I expected this to devolve into wank, but this is a thousand times more hilarious than I expected. It's like they did a surprise revival episode of Star Trek: TNG, and then The Hoff had a walk-on role.

I'm....a little confused.

1. Who is Aja Romano in the scheme of things? Just a random blogger, or someone tied into fandom?

2. ...What is the significance of the "Bitch, please" tweet?

3. Who is or is not supposed to have said it, and who is or is not believed to have photoshopped it, and to what end in either case?

2-3: Fifty Shades of Grey started life as Twilight fanfiction. File off the serial numbers, change the names, remove vampires and add BDSM, and pow: Fifty Shades. (There is archived wank on this.)

Hence, when E.L. James's lawyer said "you can't just hijack something someone else owns," it's like Vizzini the Sicilian's line: "You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen."

As a result, someone (unknown who) photoshopped what he or she imagined the Twilight camp (that is to say, Stephanie Meyer and her legal team and supporters) would say to a line like that.

1. Aja is Bookshop on LJ, a harry potter bnf. She once tried to set a t-shirt on fire to protest LJ and failed at it. You can find her and previous wanks by searching 'aja' on wiki.fandomwank.com

2. 50 Shades of Grey is a Twilight fanfic and the humour of the photoshop is that the Twilight account would have been mocking EL James for trying to stop what she did to them.

3. I am unaware of who made the photoshop.

So, the Daily Dot. Is that one of those things that live for clicks and pageviews or is it 'for the lulz' or is it something with a reasonable expectation to be taken seriously?

If I recall correctly, she started wank in ...1D fandom? Teen Wolf fandom? Some fandom that has a lot of teenagers in it which is probably why it never made it to JF. Anyway, she made a report there about tinhats and it didn't go over well. I'm a little unclear on what DD is, just that Aja regularly writes about fandom issues for it, and I presume she gets paid. I hope she gets paid - she certain brings them page views.

I'll answer your question indirectly--I think Daily Dot wants to be a more techy, geeky Gawker, which means it would like to be taken seriously, but will settle for being for the lulz to get pageviews. Speaking of which, here's the link to the article that welcomes Aja to Daily Dot.

Aja Romano Joins The Daily Dot as Staff Writer

A “fanthropologist” at heart, Aja comes to us as a former freelance writer and editor who takes pride in advocating for the legitimacy of fandom and fanwork as cultural and artistic enterprises. A longtime blogger at Bookshop.livejournal.com, Aja’s political posts have been featured on Daily Kos and the Democratic Underground, while her posts on Young Adult literature and fandom have been featured on Jezebel, Boing-Boing, and Salon. Selected works of her fanfiction have even been taught in university and high school courses on fan culture. Her blog, Bookshop, was cited in Livejournal's 10-year-anniversary anthology as "an example of fandom at its best."

Why do I suspect Aja wrote her own welcome post?

Okay, so I haven't even *gotten* into the real wank yet because I hit the brakes at this line: EL James’ agent Valerie Hoskins said the legal letter was not personal, adding: “You can’t just hijack something someone else owns.”

(Okay, so it's wildly OOC fanfic — I haven't read either book and even I can tell that much from the plot synopses — but even so.)
