An Offering To The God of Mischief Apparently fans of Loki (as played by Tom Hiddleston in Thor and Avengers) figure that since their favorite character is the God of Mischief, there should be a lot of mischief in their fandom. Devoted Loki fans mostly infest tumblr, but they also closely follow relevant Twitter accounts, including one which purported to be the official Twitter of the upcoming Thor sequel Thor: The Dark World, which was @Thor2themovie. (Click here to see a screenshot of this now-deleted Twitter's tweets; thank you to this tumblr for the link.) There should have been some warning, because a few days earlier the Twitter account linked to a photo of Christopher Eccleston from another movie, claiming that it was of him on the set of Thor 2, and a couple of days later was forced to admit it wasn't. Still, it posted plausible remarks about the various people involved in the production and links to the first set photos of Chris Hemsworth and others. But Tom Hiddleston had yet to make an appearance, much to the frustration of Loki's fangirl army. This Twitter feed announced on September 11th that later in the week, set photos of Loki would be released. Tumblr promptly lost its shit. A sample of the fangirl squeeing and convulsing: http://tomhiddles.tumblr.com/post/31456 http://thoughdoinfactshutup.tumblr.c http://stark-enterprises.tumblr.com/pos http://tomhiddlestunned.tumblr.com/p http://asparrow08.tumblr.com/post/31470 http://tawmmm.tumblr.com/post/313777610 http://viathebifrost.tumblr.com/post/31 http://lokiongallifrey.tumblr.com/p That's just the squeeing. I'm not even going to try to link the various heated debates, which took place in advance of any information whatsoever, about what Loki's hairdo is going to be for this movie. Someone posted a photo of Tom Hiddleston in a medieval looking outfit, riding a horse, claiming it was a set photo, but it was revealed to be a manip of a photo from Game of Thrones. One fan declared: "If we don’t get Thor 2 pictures with Loki tomorrow, then I will post a picture of myself wearing my Jayne hat, with two giant chickens next to me. I’m not joking. I have the picture and I am ready to post it, if I need to." The next day, Thursday, we didn't get the pictures and she posted the photo. One fan speculated about sinister motivations for the delay: Have you ever wondered why they are making such a mystery about Tom Hiddleston in the set of Thor 2? In the official Twitter they make so much mystery about his first appearance and this doesn’t happen with any other character, not even with Chris Hemsworth as Thor. They know about Loki’s popularity. They know he is the big key in this film. I guess since The Avengers, nobody expected that Loki would be the most popular character of all. Even more popular than the good guys. And I feel so, so proud of Tom Hiddleston right now. Loki could be just another villain but he’s not and we have to thanks Tom Hiddleston for it. He is the reason. Loki is a great character in the comics but Tom has built this character in a way that made the world fall in love with a villain. Others had gloomy speculations that the photos wouldn't appear. But another fan offered hope, because Hiddleston's Twitter account had gone silent which means he's working: You can always tell when The Hiddles is working. On Thursday night, @Thor2themovie promised that we would get our Loki set photos the following day. tumblr was full of Loki fangirls joking (at least I hope they were joking) about taking Friday off from school or work so they could monitor tumblr for the Loki set photos, and declaring, like children on Christmas Eve, that they wouldn't be able to sleep for excitement. On Friday morning, about 11am EST, a new tweet appeared, which put the blame on Hiddleston: ![]() The link, when clicked on, lead to this: ![]() A little later @Thor2themovie relayed an alleged apology from Tom Hiddleston: ![]() Apparently some fans were so incensed that they sent hateful messages and even, it is reported, death threats to Tom Hiddleston. I haven't been able to actually find any such messages, because they were buried under thousands of posts like this one expressing outrage at the people who sent nasty messages to Tom. One fan made this post: reblog this if you love/appreciate/respect Tom Hiddleston. I’m going to screenshot it and tweet it to him. As I'm writing this, this post has 5,543 notes. The outrage is heartening, but I have to say that I have seen dozens of posts denouncing the hate messages (which probably means there are hundreds more that I didn't get to) and none of the actual hate messages. At least one fan speculated that the hate messages might also be a rumor the fandom fell for, which I hope is true. If the hate messages are real, they are buried under a huge avalanche of outrage. Tom Hiddleston's fans are very impressed with his habitual kindness and good manners and his habit of apologizing all the time, so they predicted that he would apologize even though he hadn't done anything. Sure enough, Tom tweeted an apology. ![]() Macros were made honoring his classy behavior. ![]() And of course, tumblr went into mourning over the lack of Loki set photos. ![]() The uproar alerted TPTB to the unauthorized Twitter and they shut it down within hours: ![]() The above screenshot was posted here with the caption, "RUN BACK HOME LITTLE PRINCESS". The whole brouhaha actually made the news. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, tumblr has resumed its normal activity of posting the photos of Tom Hiddleston, as Loki and other characters, that already existed, plus naughty slash drawings of him and explanations to the stragglers who didn't take the day off from school or work as to why there aren't any set photos after all. And a certain Norse god is lounging around in Asgard having himself a good laugh. Post a comment in response: |
