Before you wank, you see The Ring...
Girl watches The Ring.

Girl likes The Ring.

Girl gets told to watch the Japanese original, Ringu.

Girl doesn't like the original.

Purists go to town.

Edit: Girl admits to not watching movie all the way through, as proven by the inability to recognize Sadako in an icon.

*snort* Okay, The Ring was creepy. It relied waaaay too much on "GOTCHA!" moments, though, instead of pure psychological terror. At least Ringu was less gross. And the people actually looked literally scared to death. And it relied on your own brain freaking you out.

Le sigh.

"Exactly!" said a holier-than-thou fan of the original. "Psychological terror all the way!"

Then he got down from his soapbox and admitted that yes, that was pretty wanky. Ce la vie.

Che... the original was like reading H.P. Lovecraft. Sure, by today's standards what he writes isn't scary. That is, unless you have an overactive imagination and your brain works against you.

What can I say? I like scaring myself more than someone else trying to scare me.

Mmm...on the one hand we have the wanky superiority complexes of the fans of the original, and on the other hand we have the blatant racism and cultural ignorance of the fans of the US version. Yum!

I have to go with superiority complex here. I mean I was willing to let it go till I got to the 'but the names are SOOO HARD' part and then I started violently twitching.

Jeebus I know we're all entitled to our opinions but when one's opinion is 'it's retarded' and the 'all the Japanese people look alike' it does make me regret the whole entitled aspect.

Well, to my mind it's no great sin to have some difficulty telling apart the actors in a movie made up entirely of a foreign nationality. I don't say this because "All them Asians look just the same!" or something like that, but more because most of us in this part of the world don't see a LOT of Asians in our day-to-day lives, and thus aren't attuned to the myriad differences that would be more apparent to someone who lived among Asians or were themselves Asian.
And then on the other hand, there's a matter that happens in all movies... trends in appearance. Especially among actresses. I'm not talking about Japanese movies alone, here... I mean, how many of us would be able to tell apart a batch of Hollywood's latest teeny-girl blondes in a lineup? I know I sure as hell wouldn't... I think they have a secret facility where they clone them and educate them in being airheaded and quirky.

Sure I might not be able to put names to a line up of actors or actresses I was completely unfamiliar with, but I have never had trouble telling characters apart in any film, regardless of what nationality they were. Similarly, I've never had trouble telling people apart just because they were of a different race than my own. Maybe it's not deliberate malice on the part of the poster, but it's certainly an excuse for laziness if nothing else.

I've never seen the Japanese version of "Ring", but the American version is one of the only horror movies that actually terrified me to the point of jitters for the next couple of days. Sure, it had "BOO AHAHAHAHA!" moments, but it relied more on actual scariness than most horror films do, and that's what got me.

And just for the record, I just stop caring altogether whenever that "AMERICANS R SOOO STUPID ADN THEY RIUNED MAH NIHON CULTURE!" arguement comes up. Just like it did in that thread.

I say, put the whole lot in a room with both Samara and Sadako, and let them sort it out. ;)

I wonder... are they windows compatible?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I read somewhere that in the novel version, Sadako could come out of basically any reflective surface... so yes, I suppose we could swing a Windows-compatible visit. :D

Now I'm going to afraid of my computer.

Oh, thank you for showing me your icons. They're very... well, cute isn't the word... shall I say effective?

May I borrow your .gif of Sadako? I'd use one of your still images, but they show up as .art files on my comp, and livejournal won't let me use those. ::sigh::

We solved the problem by watching both in a back-to-back Ringfest. Mom, who at 81 really shouldn't be watching this stuff, then asked me, "Are there any more of those?" "Lots, in Japanese, but we can't get 'em." "Aww."

I had long hair at the time, and tortured her for days by pulling it over my face and hunching over.

Honestly? I really did like Ring better than Ringu. The curse video, for one, played out a lot better in the remake.

But Ringu was the original foundation for Ring, so I'm just so damn puzzled over why people who love Ring are willing to blatantly insult Ringu. Not even dislike Ringu-- blatantly go to bat against it. How can you love a reflection and not the object that cast it?
