HDU spoil a book that's 75 years old!
smilla840 is unhappy because a Hobbit fanfic didn't warn for spoilers. Cue laughter.

Didn't know that. Yes, she's stupid for reading a futurefic and expecting no spoilers (and a number of other things she's said, like being surprised that the book has a fandom somewhere other than AO3, are also stupid). But that summary is more than iffy, I think it's a dick move-- and iirc, didn't she say there were several others with summaries like "x comforts y after z dies"?

IDK, there was plenty of silly on the OP's part, but it bugged me that people are acting like avoiding the book because you don't want to be spoiled for a sequelized presentation in another format is some kind of weird thing they've never heard of and not something people often do in other fandoms. I also don't buy that the death of whomever is so entrenched into the popular culture that it's impossible to avoid spoilers-- I quizzed a few people, all geeky people who've read and liked the Hobbit at least once, if they remembered who died in it, and none but the one who's really deep in Tolkien fandom said they did. If OP was complaining about spoilers that the dragon died, that'd be one thing, but this is in no way the same thing as "Darth Vader is Luke's father".

I guess to me, it's more like a summary that says "Han reflects on Lando's betrayal." Not everyone would know that, but I wouldn't consider it a huge spoiler, even though it's super-important to the plot of the second movie. It's been too long and it's too commonly known.

IDK. The fact that half the people you quizzed don't remember who died in it would indicate to me it's not that big a plot point, not that it's a huge spoiler or not (I think Jackson's treatment of the dwarves makes it a bigger plot point, but still).

The way Jackson's set this up, it's like people getting really into Fellowship of the Ring and then finding out that Aragorn, Legolas, and maybe another Legolas all die two movies later. (As opposed to the cartoon, where it's more like, you can tell which of the little old men is Thorin because he's the cranky one.) So I can see why new fans will be shocked (honestly, it might be better for them to find out now). I've tried not to spoil people myself, but... seriously, you're going to get spoiled between now and 2014, you might as well come to terms with it early on.

Yeah, I wouldn't trumpet it from the hills myself, it's just...dude, that is a long time. I rolled my eyes at the people freaking out that Legolas might die in movie three back in the day, and that was one book.
