...here are people like me who did read it once some fifteen years ago and promptly forgot everything about it - including how it ends

Out of this pile of crazy, I'm going to cherry-pick the part that we're supposed to spoiler alert for things people may have known and then forgotten.

"You knew how the book ended!"
"Yeah, last week I knew!"
