Comedy is hard. Wank is easy.
With a fanbase like Homestuck's, the bar is set pretty high for "baffling" things to say about the comic, but one Timothy Sexton catches creator Andrew Hussie's eye with his review/article/wordpile on Yahoo Movies that clears that bar easily:

"If you remain unaware of Homestuck as an internet phenomenon, then you either don't kids or aren't aware of this here thing called the internets. As George W. Bush liked to refer (and probably still refer) to it. Homestuck is one day going to become a movie of some sort. Comedy is hard. Death is easy. That makes Homestuck a juggler."

You can read the full thing here. You can't read it in its original form on Yahoo anymore, though, because it was removed. According to Timothy Sexton, Homestuck fans got it taken down because it was too intelligent for them and they were jealous, or something. We know this because he says so in his follow-up article, entitled "Homestuck Fans: Not Quite as Hip and Intellectually Gifted as They Think."

"Don't feed the troll? What does that mean?" -dozens of Homestuck fans.

Hussie, for his part, finds the entire thing hilarious.

I don't follow Homestuck, but wow, that guy really just doesn't want to admit he wrote a stupid and incomprehensible article.

Also I question his assertion that Casablanca is a thousand times more complex than Homestuck. I followed Casablanca just fine but part of why I don't read Homestuck is that I'm afraid it would confuse me to death. I'm not saying it's better than Casablanca, but I get the impression that one thing it doesn't lack is complexity. Then again maybe that was just one of those intellectual jokes I'm too stupid to get.

Well, you could argue that Casablanca had complexity in its characters, I suppose, but yeah, the plot's pretty straightforward. And unless that article was intended as a spoof of one of the characters' way of speaking or something of that nature, then yes, that article was just an incomprehensible pile of bad writing.

NGL, it took me two run-throughs to FINALLY get the plot -- and even now Hussie routinely inflicts giant what-the-fucks on me. Saying Homestuck isn't complicated is like saying water isn't wet.

Casablanca's got a handful of characters, a simple realistic setting, and an easy to follow plot. Its complexity lies in its themes and depth of character.

Homestuck, as I understand it, has a gazillion characters and an extremely long plot within a complex fantasy/sci-fi universe.

I have no idea how that comparison even happened.

Casasblanca is a very simple (but not simplistic) movie, and that's part of why it's so good. Being more complicated is not a positive thing when it comes to a story.

I'd also argue that a webcomic can support a larger number of plot twists and characters than a movie simply because it has a lot more time to work in. Most of the long-running webcomics I've read would take far more than a single movie to cover, and would be better compared to movie series or TV shows.

(Granted, you also need to allow that extra time means that only the devoted fans will remember hints you dropped months or years ago... that may not be a problem in Homestuck fandom.)

Basically: different media tell stories differently.

That article is amazing and not in the way the author intended, I'm sure.

I love Homestuck, I really do. The fact that Hussie laughs his ass off publicly when people do stupid shit just makes it all the better.

Maybe we all just have problems with apprehension.

By reading the quote alone, he's missing a verb in one of those sentences, and is making a pretty big assumption about the internet as a whole. Mainly, that the internet world revolves around a few things instead of, you know, encompassing a whole world.

Also, part of my issue with Homestuck is presentation: I think the typing quirks, fonts and font colours would drive me up the wall, the fact that it's not just a comic but it's got flash videos and minigames and music and all manner of things would frustrate me, I don't find anything that I've heard particularly appealing (especially about troll relationships), but I get to hear bits and pieces about it from friends of mine that read it. Fortunately, my present group of friends actually respects 'no thank you, I'm not interested' and I go back to playing doll with giant man children in power armor that wield chainsaw swords and giant-ass guns.

Poor guy must not realize that a lot of people weren't alive in the '80s to hear "I'll Tumble For Ya" and "One Night in Bangkok." I was, so I got the references, but that doesn't make them good allusions to throw at the general public (especially given that shoehorning in those allusions turned the sentences into grammatical nightmares).

Thanks for the cap — I heard about this after I had taken down and was baffled at all the attention given to the stubby little thing that was left. It definitely falls on the wrong side of that fine line between clever and stupid.

As for the vaporware movie: the webcomic already features Liz Tyler and Nicolas Cage, so what more do you need?

Wow. After straining all my Bachelor's-degree-having brain cells, here's what I was able to glean from that original "article":

-Homestuck is popular
-Homestuck will be adapted into a film someday
-comedy is hard; death is easy
-Homestuck has a lot of themes and/or tropes
-themes include classical mythology, video games, and the convergence of TV and internet entertainment
-Homestuck seems like it would be really hard to make into a movie
-but they should still make one anyway
-Homestuck proves that "internet culture" exists and is not an oxymoron
-webcomics don't have to be funny, but Homestuck is
-Homestuck is the wave of the future!
-or maybe not, because it's pretty complex and incomprehensible
-but it could still be a movie! or not.

So I guess what he's saying is that Homestuck is a webcomic that exists and should be made into a movie. Not sure why that subject merited writing an article about it.

Whenever people talk about Homestuck, it just sounds like they're all playing that game where you make up completely random stuff and pretend it's spoilers, like saying "I couldn't believe it when Bilbo became a giant squid!" except apparently no one's making anything up.

This article's run-through-a-translator feel doesn't help.

The world those of us over 40 used to know as reality is gone

Oh, okay then.

Also... he could have just said 'Homestuck manages to juggle death and comedy', which would make a certain amount of sense... But then what does the ease/difficulty of the two aspects being juggled have to do with it? Was he just so desperate to include a line that sounded deep, no matter how hard it was to come up with a sentence that could link it in to the ideas that surrounded it?

I haven't read the article yet. I want to, out of morbid curiosity, but my brain is still so fried from working retail all day that all words look like word salad to me right now. I won't be able to appreciate the true extent of the gobbledygook until I get some sleep.

This is amazing. I kind of adore it. I want to use variations of it everywhere, just thrown in at the end of every comment as a glorious non-sequitur.
