it looks like redcoats, but it isn't ([info]redcoast) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

Entry tags:fandom: supernatural, rps is not for real guys!, shipping is very serious business

The new thing in the SPN fandom is dragging babies into shipping wars
A fierce and long-time battle has raged between the Wincest (Sam/Dean) and Destiel (Dean/Castiel) shippers in the Supernatural fandom. What's that? Ships that don't involve Dean? Ha, ha!

Of course, Wincest fans have to constantly put up with harrassment because the guys are brothers so they get a lot of "Ew, that's sick!" and "Do you want to have sex with your brother?!" But mostly the wank comes from Wincest fans who are dedicated Castiel/Misha Collins haters, and Destiel fans who are Sam/Jared Padalecki haters, and despite these being a decided minority there being many prominent except to these stereotypes, each side continues to paint the other with the same brush.

Lately some shippers decided that it would be appropriate to bring an actor's two-year-old son into the debate, because that's always classy.

The tumblr blog "Things Better Than Destiel," which has listed such things as genocide, miscarriage, and, charmingly, rape, created a post that reads "Things That Are Better Than Destiel: ABORTION" and then tagged it with "West Collins," who is Misha Collin's two-year-old son. Katie (tumblr URL: kickitintheslash), writes:

Despite their claims that “THIS BLOG ISN’T POKING FUN AT ATROCITIES The only thing being mocked here is destiel,” I think this post alone makes the true intentions of this blog quite clear. West Collins is a CHILD. He has nothing to do with Destiel nor is he even aware of its existence. Tagging him - with the obviously implication that Misha and Vicki should have had him aborted - crosses a serious line. Rape jokes are horrible enough on their own… but this is almost ominously threatening. Even if you hate a ship, character, or actor… tagging innocent children in your hate posts (especially posts implying the child shouldn’t be alive) is too far. Wishing a child weren’t alive… that’s not comedy. That’s sick and too deplorable for words. Same with jokes about rape.
and,
What next? A hate blog against Wincest tagging Thomas or “Baby Ackles” in abortion posts?
Oh, it's already happened, but it wasn't anti-Wincest.

But come on, you say, surely nobody is trying to defend Things Better Than Destiel! Prepare to have your faith in humanity crushed once again, because people are. Writes anon,
I follow things-better-than-destiel and I really love it, since the Destiel shippers were really asking for such hate: they left hate everywhere, disrespected other ships and acted like assholes. I'm sick and tired of this part of the fandom and I'll support this blog no matter what. Because at the end the Destiels get that they deserve.
("the Destiels"?) The owner of the blog Things Better Than Destiel is unlikely to remove the West Collins post, seeing as how s/he wouldn't remove the "rape" post despite getting, by their own description, over a hundred messages asking them to do so. Because FREEDOM OF SPEECH, BABY!

A different tumblr user, whose URL is wincest-heaven, because of course it is, has apparently had it up to here with West Collins, and makes someecards graphics to express their feelings, seemingly in response to this video of West and Misha cooking a meal together. The first:
"Thank you for teaching me how amazing it is to be born into white privilege, Dad!
Now the world knows what a wasteful spoiled brat I am.
Let's send our video to the black kids in Haiti. Bet their bellies will hurt, when they see all the food I've wasted!"
"Oh bug, next time you go shopping be careful not to wonder into traffic and get squashed!"
The second:
"Being born into white privilege is fun. I can be a spoiled, wasteful brat and people still think it's adorable."
The third might tumble into meta commentary:
"Hey look, dad! They're talking about me on tumblr. Does that make me famous? Being white sure is nice!"
Not for nothing, but do you know who is also white? The Winchester brothers.

Surprisingly, this move does not endear Wincest shippers to Destiel shippers:
The thing that annoys me the most about (some) Wincest shippers (besides the fact that they ship Wincest) is that not only they hate Cas for no reason (he only dragged both of the brothers out of Hell and saved their lives three million times, nbd), but that they project that hatred onto Misha, and now West. WTF I WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE, HE IS TWO YEARS OLD! ARE YOU NUTS?! He is not a “spoiled brat”, he ain’t privileged (even if he is, that’s none of your concern), he is a kid with two loving parents who let him learn stuff by doing. I’m sorry that your mama didn’t hug you enough and your papa hit you with a stick every time you didn’t finish your food, but stop spreading your hatred, you fucking dickheads.
I'm sure West, who has two wealthy parents, isn't privileged at all.

For more reasoned discourse, watch Supernatural, Season ... they're considering a spin-off?! God, this show won't die!

There's overlap, like with people who use SJ as a cover for bashing pairings or characters they don't like based on tiny things which could be interpreted as problematic if you turn your head and squint.

Like all the people who accuse Odin of promoting rape because of the Loki->Slepnir incident despite it not even occurring in movie canon.

I laughed out loud at that.

Isn't that the eight-legged horse that Loki gives birth to?!

(And also, have they read any mythology at all because Odin didn't just "promote" rape)

Yes. Slepnir is movie canon, or at least an eight legged horse in Asgard is canon, but the story is not. The main argument I hear against the horserape thing is that Loki only needed to make the stallion stop working. Anything beyond that was him doing his own thing.

(And also, have they read any mythology at all because Odin didn't just "promote" rape)

I think if it didn't directly involve Loki they don't care.

Geez, you'd think I'd remember an eight-legged horse, but I don't.

Wait, is this part of the "Poor woobie Loki" thing, where they try to excuse his genocidal behavior because Tom Hiddles is cute?

He's there for like two seconds. Odin is riding him when he comes to break up the Thor/Jotun fighting. For all the movie tells us, all Asgardian horses look like that.

It's mostly fueled by that. They don't just excuse his behavior but they make the behavior of everyone else out to be monstrous to the point that Loki just had to try and kill them all.

That's why I stay away from the movie-verse fandom. I've been a fan of Loki since I was like six and I like him unrepentantly evil, damn it.

I like Loki as a character. He's a hot mess, in both senses of the term, and it's mostly his own fault. Very interesting.

But the fandom doesn't do well with 'subtle'.

I agree with all of this.

Really, now, knowing mythology!Loki, I'm pretty sure he would've been into the whole thing.

I mean, if you're going to have a rape analogy with Loki, how about the story where he eats a half-cooked "wicked" woman's heart and later gives birth to the first ogress (or troll, I've seen it translated either way)? I mean, you could probably squeeze some kind of roofie analogy out of that, if you try hard enough. And if you're really desperate to have Loki as a rape victim for some horrible reason.

That would be it, yes.
