When you're alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go #downtown abbey

Many thanks to the anon on wank_report for this small but delightful treat. I've used much of your wording in this post.

Sherlock, Merlin and Downton Abbey all go up for the National Television Awards.

Downton Abbey wins.

The Sherlock fandom on Tumblr goes batshit.

To 'get back' at Downton Abbey for winning, some people decide to start a mass campaign for Sherlock fans to spam the Downton Abbey hashtag, thereby pissing off the Downton fans.

Except for one problem...

They incorrectly spell Downton as 'Downtown' and instead spam the mispelled hashtag of "Downtown Abbey", a hashtag no one cares about or tracks.

It seems to be mostly over but here is a selection of links:

Angry fans

(1) KENNEDYS JUST GOT ROBBED what the fack is Downtown Abbey (I don't think this is Sherlock related but it was on the tag, so here you go)

(2) And the winner is...Downtown Abbey!

(3) I WILL GO ALL LIMA HEIGHTS ON DOWNTOWNS ASS.

Haha good luck with that, since “Downtown Abbey” doesn’t even exist, dumbass. Way to make yourself look like both an idiot and a douchebag in one blow.

(4) All respect to Downton Abbey, and the fanbase. I am sure that the show deserved to win just as much as the other three nominees. But as I am sure you will understand the Sherlock, Doctor Who and Merlin fandoms are a bit upset right now, just as you would have been if Downton hadn’t had won. So please do not take any offense in our disappointment post, we mean no disrespect to the show.

(5) now there’s really no way i’m ever watching downtown abbey.

Amused responses

(6) ngl this “downtown abbey” thing is cracking me up.

SO MANY PEOPLE. SUCH POOR SPELLING.

(7) It’s 3:56 AM and I just woke up and started giggling because I remembered that angry fangirls spammed the downtown abbey tag instead of the downton abbey tag

(8)
I’M STILL LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY and I need to break it down

• Some Merlin, Sherlock and Doctor Who fans are pissed
• Because their shows lost to Downton Abbey
• (Which has the highest ratings, largest audience of the 4)
• But they all think its called Downtown Abbey
• So they took their hate to Tumblr
• And tagged their hate (like douchebags)
• But they tagged it with a typo
• And so none of the hate ended in the right tag
• And it’s just
• Really
• Fucking
• Hysterical

I’m sorry to keep bringing it up but this is honestly my favorite thing since “Don’t instagram your ballots!”

(9) okay guys

so i’m writing a television show called downtown abbey and it’s about abbey and her life in downtown boston and it’s going to be great okay just TRUST ME because she says stuff like, “i was cooking that up in my head for like 2 weeks before i was like, that needs to go on the internet.”

perfect person

(10) Thank god for fans who can’t spell.

Still laughing at the reaction shot of Martin Freeman.

I'm not part of the Sherlockian/Merlin fandoms at all but it seems pretty obvious that the showmakers didn't really expect to win against Downton Abbey or to mind losing to them. Because it's Downton Abbey. It's had international critical acclaim.

Who's the dude making a face in the second gif? Because I am quite tempted to think he is the coolest.

That's King Arthur from Merlin. I mean, the actor who plays him, but I can't remember his name.

With the tongue? No idea. The guy making the :[ is king arthur, though.

Yeah, tongue guy. Frowny faces are amusing, but I'm more interested in someone who's potentially capable of laughing at himself and/or mocking his companions' bad attitudes. Of course, for either of those to be true he'd have to be involved in the show...

Tongue guy is Alexander Vhalos, who played Mordred this season.

He is the king of ridiculous faces. Seriously, I spent the entire time he was on the series playing, "Spot Mordred's Ridiculous Face".

I love how his companion (I have no idea who that is) is laughing at him in such a cold-blooded manner. (Though I'm sure it really just looks like that.)

I think they were all making over the top 'upset' faces because people kept asking them to show their 'I lost face' at last years awards. So, it's a joke.

Huh; that makes sense, I guess. I would've gone way more over the top myself, though. Maybe pull out a black veil and a handkerchief to "weep" into. Well, to each their own.

That would explain a lot, then.

I didn't really think these professionals were sitting around getting pissy at someone else winning an award but I did wonder...

I believe Martin Freeman did genuinely make a delightfully pissy face when Sherlock lost an award to The Only Way Is Essex a few years ago, but Downton Abbey is a critically acclaimed drama and TOWIE is ... TOWIE.

Oh wow, thanks for that clip. That was a very sad and annoyed face he made. Benedict Cumberbatch (and a few other people) look pretty stunned too.

(I live in the U.S. and to be honest this is the first time I've heard of The Only Way Is Essex. I gather it's not exactly the pinnacle of quality television.)

I don't follow any of them, but I gather TOWIE is in the same vein as something like The Hills or Laguna Beach? So ... yeah. I can kind of get being annoyed at losing to something like that. To be fair, though, I think it was a 'public vote' award, not a merit award.

Maybe I didn't watch for long enough, but his first reaction shot seemed more baffled than pissy... Not that I'd blame him for being cranky for losing out to that garbage.

I think there's only one reaction shot of his face (and one of Benedict Cumberbatch later on). Baffled definitely isn't the word I'd use to describe it, but to everyone their own interpretations. ^_^

I'd say it was more along the lines of a mix of "What the hell" and "Are you kidding me", myself. Cumberbatch looked like he was thinking, "Yep, too many people have no taste."

And was it just me, or did the audience as a whole seem rather put out about TOWIE winning? The applause came across as rather disjointed and half-hearted; not counting the screaming, squeeing, and cheering of the winners themselves, of course.

That's what I meant. They were like, "Should I clap? It's not a good show but it did win, so I should probably clap." *clap* (pause) *clap* "Oh, now others are doing it better, I should too." *clap**clap* "The winners look happy, so I'll clap for their happiness. Oh, that makes the clapping much easier." *clap, clap, clap*

And I hope that makes sense to someone other than me.
