Tumblr users take to streets; Misha Collins is world's greatest tree-murdering monster
Remember that Misha Collins Youtube video I told you about? Obviously filmed last summer, it briefly shows the exterior of the Vancouver-area building in which the Collins family is temporarily living.

A fan used the landmarks shown in the video to locate the Collins's address, and proceeds to tape the URLs of fan Tumblrs to trees around the building.

Misha fans totally flip their shit and try to arrange for Vancouver-based fans to remove any signs before anyone sees them.

Meanwhile, a new tumblr pops up defending the actions of the rogue URL-taper because Misha Collins has killed thousands of hypothetical people. Also, one time Misha cut down a dead tree and replanted it in a traffic island with a sarcastic Latin plaque on it which shows more disrespect for trees than taping paper to them.

Interestingly, as briefly mentioned in some of the above posts, there is a fan project to hand-write dozens (or hundreds) of fan's tumblr URLs in a book and give it to MC at a fan conference. What he's supposed to do with them is unclear, especially considering that tumblr users often change their URLs, and that Misha doesn't understand what Tumblr is. Then again, neither do I, and I've been using the site for two years.

I don't... I just don't... so that blog going on about what an idiot he is and that it's okay for fans of an idiot to be idiots as long as it's to a lesser extent, is that a fan blog or?

I sincerely think fandom is actually getting stranger. Or the strangeness is just a lot more out in the open because shame and sense have gone somewhere to die. Or maybe I'm just tired.

I blame Tumblr. You can't have a conversation on that thing (people try, but it's a mess), so stuff gets even more echo chambery and circle jerkish than it used to.

The more I spend time there, the more I think it probably is partly to blame because you're right. Someone tries to bring sense to a post and it's just another reblog. Unless you go through the tedious process of expanding all the notes and clicking on the single line links to see what people actually said, you won't even know the voice was a dissenting one.

Assuming they even complained in the post and not just the tags, where it is invisible unless you follow them.

It's an attention-seeker's dream, really.

Yeah, I can't figure it out either. Also I can't figure out how having a tumblr about Misha is being an idiot to a lesser extent than figuring out where he lives and going there.

All I can think is that maybe this person is a friend of tree-taping girl and otherwise doesn't care about the fandom, so she's just cursing at everyone else in the story. But I don't even know.

My theory re: Fandom, What Is Your Deal? is always groupthink/echo chamber. You hang out with people who are invested in getting closer to a work of art/entertainment and the people who make it, and then they get invested in convincing themselves that everything they do towards that end is not only okay but cool and right, and before you know it, you get to a place where "OMG Misha Collins is a Disrepecter of TREES!!" sounds rational.

A place where this is not embarrassing?

I said to myself, "Hey, what could be so embarrassing about a Jared Padalecki song? Lots of people like him." And then I clicked.

I find that even more disturbing since he and I share a first name.

I only clicked because of everyone else's reactions.

So it has nothing to do with your love for Jared Padalecki.

Clicked on that, read it, closed the window and got up and walked out of the room laughing. "Wow. WOW."
