Tenth Anniversary Deathmatch, first round, part 2
Congratulations to Bartending in the dark, His wife? A horse, Dumbledore is gay, and God's Magical Pubic Hairs - they all move forward to the next round. No real surprises there, except for God's Magical Pubic Hairs - I wasn't sure that could beat Usagi Kou, but it triumphed in the end.

Are you ready for the next round? Links to the wanks are found here, if you need a refresher.

You made me choose between ponies and Clan Mitchell! That was evil.

But I got a kudos notification the other day so I had to go with Clan Mitchell.

I was reading through the Clan Mitchell wank and recognised one of the names in there as someone who's been lately commenting on my current work.

Cue hiding under bedcovers.

Awkward.

At least they like what you're doing?

This is true! Although...still kind of...worrying...

If you're not in their primary fandom and/or stepping into the Clan Mitchell stuff, why sweat it? When I was a youngin' and still writing fanfic, I saw several of my followers and/or really nice commenters wind up on FW (and I had an audience of, uh, 20 LJ follows -- so not exactly the big leagues here). I've come across usernames I know from other communities in sf_d (and not in the good way). It happens. It's easier to cross paths now that fandoms have gotten smaller, the squee-posts have moved to tumblr (slowing LJ and DW traffic), and AO3 exists. The rise of social justice communities makes it easier to find out that someone you really like in one part of the internet is an ass on other issues.

Part of the reason I'm not interested in having a fandom LJ any longer is because the lines are so blurry these days. When I was last active in fandom -- as in writing fics and doing something other than lurking (or, hell, even lurking, as I don't even really follow anything right now, just sort of quietly scrounge for fics like a raccoon) -- I could just ... post fic, shut up, and be done with it. No one knew anything about me other than what I revealed on my profile and that suited me just fine. Only the big name fans were expected to have ~personas and it was the rare person who tried to keep an audience on their primary journal as opposed to using a journal for fics only.

And now it's all different and I'm grumpy. But my point is: the internet seems smaller, wanks aren't forever, and I would just enjoy the feedback without worrying too much about it. You're a writer and they're a reader. They enjoy your work. That's something to be happy about. The fact that they were wanked... the Clan Mitchell wank was weird and very specific rather than someone failing on race issues, for example. You can feel good about the feedback and not freak about the source.

You can't control who friends you once you leave your isolation pit. I've been friended by some wank all-stars for reasons I will never understand. Just sidestep the drama. If you aren't actively engaging with the person and/or part of the wank, I wouldn't cry guilt by association, but everyone has different standards. Fandoms are small sometimes and it's not like you can stop someone who once did something wanktastic from being in your fandom and liking your work. But it's a long walk from that to "I totally endorse this person's behaviour, past and present, even though I don't know them."

Fandom fail isn't necessarily the same as social justice issue failures. It's possible to do the former once and then wake up with a "Oh God, did I really say that?" hangover. The latter... not so much.

Case in point: I actually have read and enjoyed DAYD (the core story, anyway) for what it is. I stay away from pretty much everything that's come afterward, though. And regarding the author's shenanigans, nothing more need be said.
