Hope it's the former rather than the latter. Then when he ascends to sainthood, he can be the patron saint of terrible relationships and being dumped. When people pray for his intercession they'll know that he'll totally understand both their pain and their WTF?!. There are totally weirder reasons to be dumped out there, but not many.
