it looks like redcoats, but it isn't ([info]redcoast) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:accuracy is for tools, at least no one's knotting, burn baby burn, cons, fandom: supernatural, homophobia, i hate you and i hate you, i swear i will turn this comm around, lost the lulz, mod has a headache, oh hurrah the daily dot, passive-aggression with tags, person: jensen ackles, sex police, still not funny, this is not funny, troll or dumbass?, tumblr is witchcraft, wanking inside the house, what the shit is this?

What happened to SPN's bi pride?
Jensen Ackles is rather famous for being uncomfortable discussing the homoerotic subtext of Supernatural, despite that this subtext is actually text. I mean, there was an episode where Dean and Sam went to a Supernatural fan convention with a panel called "The Homoerotic Subtext of Supernatural." (Yeah, that really happened. It's a weird show.) Also, he's been doing this for nine years, so come on, man.

Anyway ... hee. Sorry, I rewatched that video and I'm laughing at how accurate it is, except that the fans should be about 95% female.

Anyway, most of the notable cast members (Misha Collins, Jim Beaver, Mark Shepard, etc.) have proven to be open about discussing gay stuff, but Ackles is allergic to it or something and usually refuses to talk about it, perhaps because when he does talk about it, he's pretty much a dick.

At today's Creation Entertainment's Supernatural convention in New Jersey, a fan, first in line at the joint Jarpad/Jackles panel, asked a question that began, "I love your character becoming more comfortable with himself over the season. I'm bisexual and -- " at which point she was drowned out by boos and groans from the crowd. You can watch the exchange here:

Jensen replied, "I'm really confused. Really? The first question?" then something about the East Coast, then, "Don't ruin it for everybody, now." The fan replied, "I didn't mean it as disrespectful at all." Jensen: "I still don't know what the question was. I'm gonna pretend I don't know what the question was. So I'm gonna take my cue and move on."

The fan who recorded it writes:

I’m really upset about this. My response to the girl’s question was of exasperation which you can hear (I say “Aye Dios Mio.”) She DOES start asking about the subtext in the show. When I heard the crowd collectively booing though, I got really uncomfortable with my own response and also theirs. When I heard Jensen’s response, I was stunned into silence and didn’t record, take pics, or really even hear the questions for a bit.

You cannot see this in the video, but I was on the side the girl was on, very close. As soon as everyone starts booing, Clif [Jensen's bodyguard], who was standing right near her, goes up to her and began having a conversation with her. She stood to the side for a bit after she stepped away from the mic (which was right after she said “I meant no disrespect”) and I thought perhaps Clif had heard all of her question and was going to let her ask or she was going to ask a new question, but after a bit she walked away.

On the way out of the panel, my friend said she saw the girl in the ballroom, wiping at her face. I didn’t see her myself, but I don’t think you need to be a genius to guess she was upset.
Fans are shocked, both at the booing immediately following someone saying they're gay bi, and Jensen's response. There's some rather depressing replies like this (warning, autoplay music): "I feel like my heart is breaking. Being Bi was never something I thought I would dislike about myself, but this is just really uncomfortable for me. I just… I wish I didn’t read/watch this. I’d rather not know."

Not everyone is mad at Jensen. Some fans defend him, like this guy, who says she deserved it because she was told not to ask a shipping question and she asked a shipping question. And someone else said she should be slapped. Cue sarcasm:
OH NO. A STRAIGHT CIS MALE WAS MADE UNCOMFORTABLE AT THE PROSPECT THAT HIS CHARACTER MIGHT BE—GASP—A HOMOSEXUAL? Clearly we should dogpile and humiliate a young bisexual teenage girl. Because she obviously doesn’t know how hard it is to be a privileged white man in this day and age and will never know the discomfort of being mistaken for a dirty homoseuxal.
Calico-kat has some really interesting analysis of how Creation runs cons and asks why the show is can talk about Wincest fanfic during episodes but the fans are not allowed to ask about it? Or as she puts it, "Y U MAEK SHO U NO LET US TALK ABT SHO?"

Creation Con announces that there will be NO MORE SHIPPING QUESTIONS and anyone who defies this rule will be tackled by ninjas. Shipping is ruined now. YOU RUINED SHIPPING.

Turns out, the fan wasn't even asking about shipping. She wanted to ask Jensen if he would participate in the It Gets Better project. So that's depressing.

Edit: The consensus was that this wasn't funny. Sorry about that. I obviously made an error in judgment yesterday. Also, some people said this was triggering/upsetting with regards to bi/homophobia, so be warned.

Edit 2: holy shit. That's a nice painting.

Tell me about your current fannish projects, people. What fic/art/vids/whatever are you working on? What do you love that isn't getting the attention it deserves?

Or tell me about your pets. Or the last awesome thing you bought. Or post a recipe. I don't care, just make it less goddamn depressing than the post.

Right now my own current favourite thing is a TV show called Scott & Bailey, about two badass BFF detectives from Manchester played by Suranne Jones (aka the TARDIS/Idris) and Leslie Sharpe. Rachel Bailey is tough and streetwise and impulsive and from a pretty rough background, whilst her best mate, partner and superior, Janet Scott, is gentler, calmer and more experienced, and a middle-aged mum whose relationship with her husband is falling apart. Their boss is Gill/Godzilla (Amelia Bullmore, HBIC), who is the toughest BAMF the world has ever seen and permanently arguing with her stroppy teenage son and stroppier ex-husband. TOGETHER THEY SOLVE CRIMES. Basically it's a team of badasss mostly older ladies being HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL (except for when they are giggly snarkers) and brilliant and smart and messed-up and angry and funny and basically running the serious crimes unit of the North. Every important character in it is female and this is never a thing, it just is, and there are three series of it and BASICALLY I NEED PEOPLE TO LOVE THIS SHOW.

And to make up for all that flailing, here are pictures of Eddie Izzard, shirtless Mark Ruffalo, and Sue Perkins.

Oh, and my dog, wearing my kid brother's headphones.

Miroslav Klose scored five times today, making him the third player in Serie A to do so and generally a pretty awesome football god whereas Fernando Torres is still not living up to his cost and all the comms are in a tizzy about David Luiz doin' some trollin;

I finished up Fire Emblem 13 which is quite possibly the most obviously pandering/fanservice-y game this side of being a dating sim.
Which it is.

I have spent the day watching MST3K and remembering that I kind of wanted to be Pearl Forrester as a kid

I've got a convention coming up at the end of the month and I have art show space and I'm not sure what to do with it. I want to sell some fannish stuff but I'm not sure what all's big right now (definitely planning a mixed medium Doctor Who piece, looking forward to using watercolors)

As far as what I love that isn't getting attention/or maybe I just don't pay attention... anyone else checked out this Hemlock Grove? Saw the first two episodes and am being told it gets way better. Seems cool.

And pets... um... mine is sick and has been a royal pain in the butt all week but I can't get mad because she's sick. Silly adorable kitty - at least the medicine is easy to give her?

Sadly, instead, I'm faffing about on Pinterest and waiting for the latest Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast to upload.

I went to TEDxSydney on Saturday, and my mind was blown. There were high numbers of hipster, online libertarian and media/marketing people, but also lots of fascinating other people from all walks of life who were open about being fannish or their hobbies or their politics and what small gestures they've made towards making the world a better place (like taking in a refugee as a housemate rather than the best dressed white non-smoker girl to apply).

I can really recommend it. The crowds during the breaks as people queued up for food were a little overwhelming, but if you hid at the back and waited until they thinned it was okay. And when I took to hiding in a corner to avoid my social anxiety, the people who came over and started conversations were all very nice and socially aware enough to know when not to push. I started the day on my own, and walked out with the names and email addresses of a bunch of people that I'd like to know better.

OOH, and "my" telescope, which was damaged by bushfires in January, looks like it will be ready for observations tomorrow lunchtime! And we're on first, where we is my boss and I, and we're going to be running it constantly for the next two weeks. Not that we need sleep or anything. (I'm thinking we should recruit a few phd students.)

If you don't mind a milkshakey earworm, here's a video of my nephew singing his favourite song of the moment. We've since got him singing it while holding and drinking a milkshake, but that's not yet online.

Just read what I need in school supplies for my journalism in electronic media class for spring term.

Netbook or laptop. He directed us to where to buy one and said it was cheaper than most textbooks. One of the prices he cited was 500 dollars, so I am more than a little alarmed about textbook prices now.

It's good to know I can write off my new netbook, I guess.

|o/ I've been working on customising a chat room for the Hikaru no Go dreamwidth community.

It's been a lot of fun, customising it exactly as I want it and implementing some custom commands etc (there are a bunch of random generator commands for drawing cards, nigiri, flipping a coin, rolling die + just plain random commands such as /fistbump, so you can INVOKE THE MAGICAL HEALING POWER OF THE FISTBUMP!)

My favourite thing is the modifications to the trivia bot. We've now got over 200 Hikaru no Go trivia questions, his name is now Ochibot, and he goes crazy when you bring up the subject of Shindou or Waya, among other things. XD (He's also somewhat dismissive of Sai, "Artificial Intelligence is so overrated")

It's basically been the BEST TOY EVER, to mod.

And also lead to one of the best possible answers yesterday for the Hikago day prompt "Five Reasons Why Ochi Is Better Than Yashiro" here: http://hikarunogo.dreamwidth.org/82168.html?thread=840696#cmt840696 . XD)

I'm still basking in the post-Spartacus afterglow. Agron and Nasir were a canon gay couple who loved each other, made out on screen, and at the end, they lived (the gay couple lived!) to walk away hand in hand, even though nearly everyone else in that series was killed off. *happy sigh*

I want to read about everyone's projects but I need to leave for school in twenty minutes and still haven't eaten breakfast/made lunch, so here's my current projects:

* I'm about halfway through writing something whose working title is The Mpreg Abortion Fic
* I seriously need to finish tweaking my ship in a bottle and get to work on making more
* I got a request from someone to make/help them make a Bubbles Von Salamancer crochet pattern, which sounds awesome and I'd really like to do

Unfortunately, school is kicking my butt this block, and will continue to do so until a week from Tuesday. Also, I'm double-booked on Saturday for a craft show (hosted by the local roller derby team, how cool is that!) and the local QUILTBAG chorus' concert (where I have a "solo" bit in "I's the By"), which makes getting other things done difficult. (If anyone's in the Johnson County, Iowa area and is interested in either of these things, let me know! I can and will provide info!)

Let's see...I'm finally working on the last chapter of my 7th Sea fanfiction and grinding Spirits of Harmony in World of Warcraft so I can get a better weapon for my ret set.

Your dog is precious.

And let me see...haven't been doing as much stuff for Rise of the Guardians as I'd like, what with work and all, but I love drawing Pitch/Jack. Or just Book!Pitch. That's always fun.

Gragh, why isn't it October yet, I want to read the next book.

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is this weekend and I am super excited! I don't have a table myself, but it should be loads of fun to wander around and meet all the friends and comicking professionals who'll be in town for the event C: I've got some books I'd love to get signed by Ross Campbell, hee...

My own comic project is still going, five years and six hundred pages since I started it, and I just got over a major plot-related stumbling block in the 15-page minicomic I'm working on for an anthology (that will hopefully be released for print in December) :D Woo!

My youngest cat is the biggest doof who ever doofed. You know how old Tom & Jerry style cartoons will show a character running away with their legs churning away and them not moving a millimeter for a couple of seconds?

My cat does that whenever I come around a corner and surprise him. Doesn't matter what the flooring is, he regularly does it on carpet.

At this point I'm pretty sure he's doing it to deliberately be silly.
