Like the others said, it's all about the toys. The more characters/different versions of characters you have, the more different toys you can sell. Actually it's sort of like that Transformers animated movie that the Nostalgia Chick reviewed, where the whole point was to kill off all the old Transformers and introduce a new batch so now you have to go buy action figures for all the new guys.
