Entry tags:fandom: mortal instruments, fandom: the hunger games, finders keepers one liners, it's still mahogany it's just got a hole, mahogany dies at the end, my wood is pastede on yay, person: cassie clare, person: sarah rees brennan, plagiarism, this book is full of mahogany, what is plagiarism we just don't know

CASSANDRA CLAIRE CAUGHT PLAGIARIZING (again)
On the day of her movie premiere. Oh Jesus.

How it all started:

Cassandra Claire, writing as Cassandra Clare is publishing a series of e-novellas about Magnus Bane, co-written with Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson. In the most recent book entitled Vampires, Scones, and Edmund Herondale, tumblr user teensniper found a quote from the Hunger Games film neatly tucked in the dialogue.

From the Post:

.

from Vampires, Scones, and Edmund Herondale, by Cassandra Clare (or Cassie Claire, if you prefer) and Sarah Rees Brennan. remember Cassie Claire, dear readers? remember her epic Harry Potter fanfictions and how they were veritably full of dialogue and action lifted straight from something like forty different popular sources? remember how she said she wasn’t a plagiarist, heavens no, she was just ‘leaving easter eggs’ for sharp-eyed readers? remember how she moaned about crediting those easter eggs sources, because they were just inspiration?

remember The Hunger Games movie that came out like seventeen months ago and was stupidly popular, because the books are stupidly popular? remember Effie Trinket’s indignant train face? spoiler alert: if you remember the goddamn Draco trilogy, and laptopgate, and Cassie Claire’s Weasley-cest porno that was also named The Mortal Instruments, you probably remember Elizabeth Banks shrieking THAT WAS MAHOGANY. really, we should all just be surprised it’s taken this long.

big ups to Sarah, partner in shitty YA reading crimes, for spotting this first.

Cue shitstorm. You can read some really epic responses by checking the reblogs on the teensniper post.

This particular novella was co-written by Sarah Rees Brennan. Guess who took the bullet? (hint: Sarah Rees Brennan).

Sarah Rees Brennan's response (which basically calls people who accused her of plagiarism sexist):

Wow, this is not my week. ;)

So… I wrote that, and apparently it’s in the Hunger Games movie. No need to blame Cassandra Clare.

I’ve always said I wrote it.

https://twitter.com/sarahreesbrenna/status/347127009568243713

https://twitter.com/sarahreesbrenna/status/365612781510201344

I’ve only seen the Hunger Games movie once (I don’t know if it was in the books, if it was, my bad even more, I have read that first book more than once and consider myself a fan) and it was in the cinema with several non-book-reading friends whispering ‘Does she get with Peter or Dale?’ I don’t remember any lines from it except for the ‘I volunteer as tribute’ line, and that’s because it’s on tumblr so much. I bought the movie… because it was great, and I intend to watch it and parody it, but in seven months I haven’t had time, which sucks out loud, especially if I’d watched the movie again I wouldn’t have written the line.

I wrote most of that whole scene, which is a scene about politics between an angel-blooded community with strict laws and a loose assortment of different vaguely demon-y people they don’t get along with. Because I (always on the side of the vaguely demon-y) wanted to write stuff about how said politics would be, slightly based on the fight for Home Rule in Ireland at the time. Hello, my name is Sarah and I’m a history nerd. Cassie went over it and added more werewolf/vampire romance.

I made the joke because well, it’s a joke construction that’s pretty common. The Hunger Games did it, so did Friends and Sex in the City and a ton of other things. Someone’s destroying stuff, and the other person’s like ‘Oh dear God no, you vandal, that was Armani/a Ming vase/WATCH THE MONET/they’re Manolos!’

Seemed natural to do a similar joke in a Victorian setting, because werewolves in a Victorian parlour could do a lot of damage if they got agitated.

I also made jokes about Queen Victoria giving birth to her ninth kid, and how everyone at the time was like ‘Chloroform? Why would the Queen use THAT, when ladies totally love giving birth and it’s so awesome?’ I’m a history nerd, and that means era-appropriate jokes. ;)

At the time, a bunch of expensive furniture was made of mahogany. Mahogany exists (the Hunger Games didn’t make it up) and is expensive (quote: “… and the notary consistently appraised mahogany furniture at higher amounts than other kinds of furniture.15 like dussolier’s inventory, the “Miscellaneous announcements” section of newspapers only distinguished wood if it was mahogany.”) So, I thought of mahogany, as I might’ve thought of Wedgwood bone china.

I also thought of mahogany because I really love mahogany. I am into interior design, I love old furniture and old houses, I think it’s a beautiful kind of wood, so that’s why it came to mind.

But actually… I have more to confess on the subject of mahogany. (NOBODY EVER KNEW THERE WAS THIS MUCH TO CONFESS ON THE SUBJECT OF MAHOGANY.) Okay, please prepare yourselves for some secondhand embarrassment, because I am about to be such a nerd, you may not even be able to take it.

I have loved mahogany since I was fifteen, when I was reading a book series called The Secret Circle by L.J. Smith, and one of the characters… the one who I had a crush on…. had eyes that were described as the colour of mahogany. I didn’t know what mahogany looked like, but you better believe I looked it up. And then I went ‘wow, pretty.’

I… actually have proof of this. And I think you should know, after I have shared this proof, I am going to have to go under my bed and live there forever. Please send all my messages to SRB, Under the Bed. (Um, deliberate book/movie reference.)

I liked the L.J. Smith books so much that… my best friend and I… set up a website about the books and the cute boys in them. We called ourselves Hellewise and Maya (I was Maya) after other two characters in the L.J. Smith books? (Please put me on an iceberg and send me out to sea where nobody can laugh at me.)

This website still exists:

http://www.angelfire.com/sc2/mayaandhellewise/NIGHTWORLD.html

As does the page where the character from the Secret Circle is extensively described and quoted from, and his beyootiful mahogany eyes particularly.

http://www.angelfire.com/sc2/mayaandhellewise/NICK.html

So… yup. Mahogany. I’m into it. Maybe too into it.

(Now, when I was writing it, I was just like ‘I have written a joke. Now another! Now another! I LOVE JOKES!’ All this is me thinking back to what was behind the joking. I didn’t think about it much at the time.)

You guys can, of course, call me a plagiarist if you like, or decide I suck, though I think three words of a joke is… not plagiarism.

http://misssnark.blogspot.ie/2006/05/steal-thisi-dare-you.html

'It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission' is something I've seen several times, and I've noticed that. By Lois McMaster Bujold, by Christopher Paolini, it was originally said by Grace Hopper… I've been like 'Oh, same line. Tip of the hat or they just came up with it?' No way for me to know, but I didn't go 'Stealin” or decide they sucked. (Lois McMaster Bujold, a long way from sucking. I love Lois McMaster Bujold's writing.)

I’m writing an online short story for my lovely readers right now, and I was reading over it as I wrote more and saw that the bratty hero at one point when told he couldn’t do something says 'I do what I want.'

http://sarahtales.livejournal.com/209287.html

I am fairly certain it is something I’ve seen people say a lot on tumblr. Um, maybe it comes from somewhere? Maybe it’s just tumblrspeak. In any case, it obviously got into my brain, and I wrote it down. This happens.

Going through my books or my fanfiction (I know tons of people have a file, because I made one and gave it to them ;))… well, guys, feel free to do it. I simply don’t know if there would be a line here or there that you could find in another book or a movie or whatever. I don’t google every line as I write them, you end up reading your own book forty thousand million times so every line seems weirdly familiar on re-reads, but I think it’d be pretty clear that there isn’t a pattern, and that I think I can come up with my own jokes myself. Whether my jokes are any good… that I leave up to the reader!

Had I decided to start stealing jokes, I would not be ninnyhammer enough to go ‘the big YA movie franchise of 2012. That’s where I’ll go first. Am a criminal mastermind. Nobody will EVER SUSPECT!’

So, to wind this up: Cassie, I’m sorry about this! It’s my fault, and while as this massive post suggests it was massively unintentional, I feel really bad, especially about the assumption you wrote this when I did. The Bane Chronicles is meant to be about fun, and about celebrating the popularity in YA of a bisexual Indonesian dude who dresses flamboyantly and does magic and is a hero, and not to cause hassle like this for you or anyone.

To my past self: Sarah, I’m mad at you: I don’t love internet drama and it sucks to have to do another round of it, specially in my capacity as ‘that girl kind of adjacent to Cassie.’ (While obviously Cassie is my friend and I like her…I like all my friends…I’d much rather people thought of me as ‘Sarah Rees Brennan, she writes bangin’ YA books’ or even ‘Sarah Rees Brennan, unfortunate jokes.’ Possibly from now on it’s going to be ‘Sarah Rees Brennan, keep her away from the mahogany.’) Please pay more attention to movies, and I’m especially mad I had to tell people about the Books, the Bad and the Babes site, which YOU, past Sarah, are entirely responsible for.

To anyone who felt thrown out of the story by that line, I am sorry as well. Can totally change it to werewolves crushing Wedgwood if you’d prefer. ;)

On the subject of internet flak, well, please don’t send me abusive anonymous messages (though I will try to answer non-abusive non-anonymous ones on this topic as I do on others, in my super-behind fashion), but I do think this—if you’ve decided someone sucks (and, just saying, so many people find it easy to say ladies suck, and dudes rock) you examine everything they do, and you believe everything bad that everybody says about them. And nobody’s going to look good if you do that.

I sure wouldn’t.

Find the original post @ Sarah Rees Brennan's tumblr

To make matters more...interesting...Holly Black, Maureen Johnson and John Green also chimed in with their opinions, both of which is basically: "it's not plagiarism nothing's original shut up."

Cue angrier responses from people who've basically given up on both authors.

So what do you think? I'm guessing CC just passed the buck to SRB because she has more important things to worry about (ie The Mortal Instruments movie premier in Hollywood today), but perhaps SRB, HB, JG had their points? Sound off below.

Oh and also just a head's up, a lot of those links providing receipts on CC's plagiarism and shady fandom behavior are disappearing. Fast.

Is there anything other than that one line? If not, the argument for plagiarism is mighty weak. Standard joke formula + standard precious material = easily repeatable output.

As for its being in Hunger Games, I saw the movie and don't remember it, so it's not on my list of Iconic Hunger Games Moments. Could someone who's a bigger fan than me weigh in on whether the line is important to fans and therefore a target for theft? Otherwise, the whole thing strikes me as a coincidence that no one would have looked twice at if it weren't for CC's name.

Yeah, that's a fairly standard joke that I've seen/heard before The Hunger Games movie and I am sure I will see and here again, so it doesn't seem like plagiarism from these seats.

That said

And then the way over the top, semi-panicked scramble to smooth it over because WELL-DOCMENTED MAHOGANY OBSESSION IS WELL-DOCUMENTED makes it look a little funny too.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I dislike CC and SRB has always defended her. On the other hand, I loved SRB's fics back in the day, and I used to read her blog (with things like this Star Trek parody)...

As far as the overblown apology/explanation for the one line, though, I don't think she's going that overboard - in comparison to her normal blog writing style, that is. That's just how she writes entries. It seems OTT to everyone who doesn't read her LJ, definitely, but from my memories of 'back when I used to actually check my friends page', she's written longer posts on, like, preference of jam flavors.*

* I don't actually know if she ever posted something like that. I would not be surprised, however.

Seriously, CC? "Sorry, that's Sarah's fault. Off to my movie premiere!"???

And Sarah is way too tl;dr defensive. I bet if she weren't so familiar with the original wank, the response would have been more "lol, it's a common joke and mahogany is the appropriate thing here". Which makes this all the more headdesky. She blew it up on herself, and now it looks even worse. Of course, what can you expect from joining up with CC even if you know her history pretty intimately.

(I've always wondered how involved MJ was with all that, if at all. She's really close to a lot of the HP folk, via LeakyCon, but I have no idea if she was involved with the fanfic stuff in CC's heyday.)

Definitely on the side of "this isn't plagiarism."

But I'm wondering why she felt she had to point out that mahogany exists and is expensive. Are there actually people who think the Hunger Games movie made it up?

Is it petty that I'm more pissed off that she misquoted the quote she correctly attributed to Rear Admiral Grace Hopper than anything else here? I'm pretty sure it's petty.

(The correct quote is "It is easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission." Incorrect variations on it are a pet peeve of mine (except contractions), not least because Rear Admiral Hopper was fucking awesome.)

With bated breath, I await SRB's dissertation on the existence of walnut, rosewood, cherry, satinwood, and oak.

This reminds me that I still need to get The Demon's Covenant and The Demon's Surrender at some point.

(I read TDC from the library and haven't yet read TRS, but I did enjoy TDL when I read it years ago. Would be interested in hearing opinions from other folks who've read the books.)

Reading the angrier responses ...

but you know what was the worst though? Cassandra framed a woman for a crime she didn’t commit, just out of spite, and then laughed about it, and when that woman finally came out and told her story, you defended Cassandra. that was the moment I stopped being a fan of yours tbh, and it was pretty disappointing for me because I had fangirled over all of your work since I was 12 and I looked up to you.

What is this? I greatly dislike CC and thought I knew everything terrible about her, but more bad things have come to light in the mainstream??

I don't understand how CC keeps managing to find people willing to throw away their self respect for her approval.

I think the wankiest thing in this one is the long-ass response to plagiarism accusations. Dude just say, "Oh man I'm so embarrased, I thought I was being original and I didn't intend to steal from anyone. I apologise, and the line will be altered."

Why does everyone, at least on the first page of comments, seem to think this isn't most likely another case of CC plagiarism? And that's not a rhetorical question, I genuinely don't get it, and would like to hear a reasonable response to this.

I get SRB's argument about there being many variations of the line (watch the Monet/that's a ming vase/etc.) but she wrote the exact same line. And maybe I could understand it if the mahogany quote had come from an obscure or old source, but it didn't. It was from an extremely popular movie, based on an extremely popular book series, that came out less than two years ago.

Oh sure, you could say, "well people who don't move in those circles still wouldn't have known about the meme", but CC (and I bet SRB, too), very much does. Furthermore, from what I've seen, at least, the Harry Potter & Hunger Games (and I think Mortal Instruments, too) fandoms are very interconnected, sharing many fans, including CC herself in the first two (the third being a pastiche of her HP fics created by CC herself, natch), so she will not only have almost definitely have heard the line, but also seen the meme. And on top of all this, she's a known plagiarist.

Now, maybe there's a rational explanation for all this, and if so I would love to hear it. However, atm, it seems clear to me, at least, that this is entirely CC's fault, that she probably wrote that section (or at least suggested it) and that SRB is, as another commenter put it, "heidipatrolling and throwing herself onto a pyre for CC", as per usual.

So again, I ask: why does no one else seem to see it?
