I've only seen it shortened to "ask", which really annoys me because it suggests that the word left out is also "ask" rather than "get". Getting permission can be worlds more difficult than asking permission, especially as a marginalized individual (for example, Rear Admiral Hopper as a woman in the military and in computer science). I don't know, the shortened version just makes it seem to me like getting permission is as easy as asking for it, making the speaker a total asshole for not asking in the first place.
Of course, it's one of my favorite quotes, so I may be overprotective of it/reading too much into the shortening/etc.
