Cassandra Clare and the Panned Picture
When we last left out heroine she was leafing some thorny mahogany pickle to her partner-in-crime to go to her big movie premiere.

Well the first of the Mortal Instrument movies is out, ladies and gents!

While not doing terribly bad (Sony had nothing to lose apparently), it didn't exactly shine either taking in only $9 million through the weekend and $14 million at the moment.

So Cassie Claire, er, Clare, has had to do a wee bit of backpedaling.
Covered here but the important tweets are at the bottom.

You see, she didn't really have any control over the film and so if it bombs, it's the movie producer's fault. Nope, zero input on the whole dealio.

Will there be a sequel, given the budget versus the income? Will it matter? Who knows. Expect to see the Mortal Instruments t-shirts next month at your local Hot Topic and see Cassie Clare in her next adventure, Dancing With Wool!

(It could be wood again. Or Woof? Woozie? Dancing With Who?)

Cassandra Claire is a wonder of science. She manages to go through life without making any mistakes and without anything ever being her fault. It's inspiring, really.

It's magic, okay.

Like.

Magic.

(Apparently she's headed overseas to see more premieres maybe? I can't tell what's going on with her Twitter because I suck at Twitter.)

14 million domestic since last Wednesday, I think between 10-13 million internationally. 27 million in week 1 of a $60 million production? No I think they will not make the sequel. Not unless a lot of money has already been spent in retaining the actors/actresses to reprise their roles.

Still, they will wait as long as they can to make a final decision with the hopes of some kind of traction or something to keep TMI in theaters.

One of the articles above makes the point that even if the movie bombs there's still the hope of licensing tie-ins ie t-shirts / merchandise / CDs / etc. to cater to the tween fans.

But overall this season has been a season of epic tankage at the box office much schadenfreude about that really

so was I the only one repeatedly stalking the comments on the three most recent CC-related posts across FW/FL for potentially new developments

Anyway.

Zwart’s biggest challenge was compressing the book into a “normal movie length.” He explained that he kept what we’ll see on screen as authentic as possible because, “I was working closely with Cassandra on a lot of it, and she was very helpful so it was smooth sailing.”

Clare agreed, saying, “I was pretty interfere-y…there really was almost nothing when I didn’t bug Harald about the costumes or sets or story on one level or another. He was sort of introducing me on how to make a movie, and I was talking to him about the stories. It was very collaborative.”

VERSUS:

I had very little control.

(screencapped the tweet just in case)

The distance between the two is vast and beautiful, a shimmering plain of iridescent WTFs that almost hurts to look at. I'm curious as to what Zwart thinks of CC discarding their collaboration so blithely in public.

Isn't it pretty standard crappy-author behaviour? "If you loved it, it's because I'm a great author; if you hated it, it's because it was ruined by the editors." It would be nice to see someone taking responsibility for their own failures once in a while.

The book gave the protagonist an invisible love interest, so hiring an actor for the role was just wasteful spending.

With TMI flopping, I am now very interested to see what E.L. James' "masterpiece" will take in box office revenue when it premieres. Unlike CC, James had creative control written into her contract with casting, etc. But it is amusing to see CC backpedaling now.

There was a thing I read on tumblr about the fandom generation gap:

Either you were there for the Cassie Claire plagiarism wank, or you had to have it explained to you.

(I joined fandom in 2003/2004 ish, after the hullabaloo had died down, and read up on it, but it still bends my brain when I realise how many young 'uns there are who were JUST BORN when shit went down.)

I'm not surprised in the slightest that TMI flopped. I frequent the movies often and TMI never got a proper trailer shown (by proper I mean there are advertisements shown before the actual trailers, like stuff for Orange is the New Black, Agents of SHIELD, and mostly TV movies. TMI was always ham fisted into the advertisement section). Even when it did get airtime it seemed like a cashgrab for idiots, what with a "PLEASE BUY OUR BOOK TOO!" nod at the end of it.

i have a friend who pretty much sees just about every movie released. She walked out of TMI, demanded and got a refund of the ticket price and has not stopped badmouthing it yet.

I personally have no intention of seeing it because I refuse to spend money that MIGHT enrich Cassandra Clare in any way. I remember her bad behavior back in the day and I refuse to reward such a person.

It kills me that my icon is still relevant.
But moving on...

If you google the 1 star reviews for CoB at Amazon, the complaints about the book raise the EXACT SAME issues as the current movie reviews from people who have no dog in the CC fight.

(Now 12% at Rotten Tomatoes and still falling, BTW)

It was weak material to begin with. Unoriginal. Badly mashed together. Her sales bolstered only by the inexplicable cult of personality she somehow inspires.

CC's gift is not for writing, but for networking, manipulation and building a veneer of credibility by surrounding herself with better talent who have a measure of integrity.

I tried to read COB but was chewing my own leg off by page 6.
After that I only picked up to books to confirm that Heidi was missing in action from CC's many thanks and acknowledgements. Like so many who threw themselves under the bus for CC, the impact seems to have woken them up.
(See the Amazon 1-Stars for a who's who of CC trolls who leapt to her defense and now are cast aside)

It appears that, after a while, the KoolAid wears off.

I predict the sequel will be dumped, CC will behave with her lack usual grace and sense of fair play, and her ample karma will be run over by betrayed friends/business associates collective dogma until it is a but a pathetic greasy spot on the highway.

What goes around- etc...
The bigger they are - etc...

I was stuck at the mall for hours this week waiting for computer repair to happen, so let me inform you: THE T-SHIRTS ARE ALREADY AT HOT TOPIC.

Honest question: Did any of the plagiarized parts of Draco Trilogy make it into City of Bones, or did CC cut those out?

Thank merciful flying spaghetti monster, City of Ashes has been shelved. And with that comes CC having to bury her face into some well deserved humble pie.

“Speaking for myself — and honestly, for readers and fans, too — I think a delay could be good. The draft of the screenplay I saw for the first time last week was very far from the book City of Ashes, and if they’d really started shooting in September there wouldn’t have been time to change it.

“Though the movies are based on my books, they are not my movies.”

Oh, of course not. Never mind the fact that she constantly bragged and rubbed it in everyone's noses over how "interfere-y" she was.

She'd rather suck than be a plagiarist! (TM) kay-mulan.dreamwidth.org
