Cassandra Clare and the Panned Picture
When we last left out heroine she was leafing some thorny mahogany pickle to her partner-in-crime to go to her big movie premiere.

Well the first of the Mortal Instrument movies is out, ladies and gents!

While not doing terribly bad (Sony had nothing to lose apparently), it didn't exactly shine either taking in only $9 million through the weekend and $14 million at the moment.

So Cassie Claire, er, Clare, has had to do a wee bit of backpedaling.
Covered here but the important tweets are at the bottom.

You see, she didn't really have any control over the film and so if it bombs, it's the movie producer's fault. Nope, zero input on the whole dealio.

Will there be a sequel, given the budget versus the income? Will it matter? Who knows. Expect to see the Mortal Instruments t-shirts next month at your local Hot Topic and see Cassie Clare in her next adventure, Dancing With Wool!

(It could be wood again. Or Woof? Woozie? Dancing With Who?)

14 million domestic since last Wednesday, I think between 10-13 million internationally. 27 million in week 1 of a $60 million production? No I think they will not make the sequel. Not unless a lot of money has already been spent in retaining the actors/actresses to reprise their roles.

Still, they will wait as long as they can to make a final decision with the hopes of some kind of traction or something to keep TMI in theaters.

One of the articles above makes the point that even if the movie bombs there's still the hope of licensing tie-ins ie t-shirts / merchandise / CDs / etc. to cater to the tween fans.

But overall this season has been a season of epic tankage at the box office much schadenfreude about that really

Man I am so sad that Pacific Rim didn't do well. I thought the movie was awesome.

According to this costs were $190 million and it got back $400 million. Comparable to Failbender, granted, but it has the advantage of not having crappy (ISTR) reviews.

Hooray! I heard it didn't do well opening weekend but I'm glad it was a success.

Now they just need to make more action figures.

I know that NECA's continuing the action figure line later in the year, with figures of Striker Eureka and Leatherback.

I'm just waiting till they come out with Otachi and/or Slattern.

I've heard that international response has pushed Pacific Rim into the "sequel, maybe?" category.

I'm completely torn whether or not I'm down with the whole Newt-as-a-sequel-villain tidbit to boot.

Last I heard, del Toro confirmed that there would be a sequel. He didn't say anything about Newt, but he did tease the idea of a creature that was half Kaiju, half Jaeger.

I only follow films peripherally, since I'm not able to watch them, but I recall a lot of positive press about PR, not to mention bonus articles on the career trajectory of the director, so I'm not sure it's a classic flop.

My rudimentary understanding was that it was a good film, although not a conventional blockbuster (and domestic gross suggests the same?). Maybe it'll get a nod in the technical categories come Oscar season?

Wasn't the release date around the time of the Zimmerman trial? For some reason, I seem to recall thinking "oh, that sounds like an awesome film" but being distracted by the news. Or my memory is shit, which is probably more likely.

I'm not sure. It came mid-July I believe if that helps.

Given that the director is Guillermo Pan's Labyrinth del Toro, I'd say the future of his career is still bright.

Thank you. I knew it was an auteurist director but couldn't remember Guillermo's name.

Given the positive reviews and the director, my guess is that PR was never expected to be a huge summer blockbuster and that the studio would consider it a financial success. Which is very different from the position CC is in, where the film didn't have to be "good," just bring in plenty of cash and become a franchise. Oops.

True, but there was a strong feeling that Pacific Rim had to do well for him to get funding to do Mountains of Madness. Who else could do Lovecraft's monsters justice?

The verdict came out on opening night. Like, literally, the movie ended, and some guy next to me checked his phone and tell me the guy got off. Put a damper on the evening.

I doubt it though. Failbender got back ~$400 million on $150 million and still is considered such a piece of shit that no sequel is likely to ever be made.
