Cassandra Clare and the Panned Picture
When we last left out heroine she was leafing some thorny mahogany pickle to her partner-in-crime to go to her big movie premiere.

Well the first of the Mortal Instrument movies is out, ladies and gents!

While not doing terribly bad (Sony had nothing to lose apparently), it didn't exactly shine either taking in only $9 million through the weekend and $14 million at the moment.

So Cassie Claire, er, Clare, has had to do a wee bit of backpedaling.
Covered here but the important tweets are at the bottom.

You see, she didn't really have any control over the film and so if it bombs, it's the movie producer's fault. Nope, zero input on the whole dealio.

Will there be a sequel, given the budget versus the income? Will it matter? Who knows. Expect to see the Mortal Instruments t-shirts next month at your local Hot Topic and see Cassie Clare in her next adventure, Dancing With Wool!

(It could be wood again. Or Woof? Woozie? Dancing With Who?)

so was I the only one repeatedly stalking the comments on the three most recent CC-related posts across FW/FL for potentially new developments

Anyway.

Zwart’s biggest challenge was compressing the book into a “normal movie length.” He explained that he kept what we’ll see on screen as authentic as possible because, “I was working closely with Cassandra on a lot of it, and she was very helpful so it was smooth sailing.”

Clare agreed, saying, “I was pretty interfere-y…there really was almost nothing when I didn’t bug Harald about the costumes or sets or story on one level or another. He was sort of introducing me on how to make a movie, and I was talking to him about the stories. It was very collaborative.”

VERSUS:

I had very little control.

(screencapped the tweet just in case)

The distance between the two is vast and beautiful, a shimmering plain of iridescent WTFs that almost hurts to look at. I'm curious as to what Zwart thinks of CC discarding their collaboration so blithely in public.

I suppose you could take it to mean that just because she was consulted it doesn't mean they actually listened to her, but... nah, I'll stick with her being a hack who bends the truth to her whim.

Exactly. If it wasn't Cassie Clare I'd be a lot more willing to offer some leeway and think 'okay, she talked to them a lot and then saw the movie and realised they'd not listened to her as much as they needed to'. But it is Cassie, and so I think she's lying to cover her own arse because that's what she does.

You could say that ... if it weren't for this source, which speaks about Cassie Clare being called up in the middle of the night to give her approval on some tiny detail of the film: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/mortal-instruments-how-author-cassandra-609043

Bahahahahaha welp, there you go. This is precisely why I will never give her the benefit of the doubt.

Whatever Zwart feels about how CC is acting now, I suspect it's a learning experience for him. Hitch your wagon to a person with the integrity of a stereotypical used-car salesman, get stranded on the highway.

I wonder if CC will continue to get away with this pattern of behavior if she continues in Hollywood in any way.

I suspect her relationship with Hollywood is dunzo. Her very first book-to-film has yielded a commercial and critical failure, and that's a very serious problem for people who make big-budget movies. Even better, she's compounded that disappointment by showing she's happy to toss the director under the bus. I don't expect any more producers to take an interest in her books after this.

Her readers, however, will continue to enable her assholery.

I think it's interesting because it's one thing dealing with the internet public, being able to get away with bullying and intimidating people into shutting up, but Hollywood... well, that's like comparing a puddle to an ocean. The media is harsh about stinkers, and I sincerely doubt CC has the influence to quiet magazines/professional internet reviewers the way she did 17-year-old fanfic readers in her heyday.
