Cassandra Clare and the Panned Picture
When we last left out heroine she was leafing some thorny mahogany pickle to her partner-in-crime to go to her big movie premiere.

Well the first of the Mortal Instrument movies is out, ladies and gents!

While not doing terribly bad (Sony had nothing to lose apparently), it didn't exactly shine either taking in only $9 million through the weekend and $14 million at the moment.

So Cassie Claire, er, Clare, has had to do a wee bit of backpedaling.
Covered here but the important tweets are at the bottom.

You see, she didn't really have any control over the film and so if it bombs, it's the movie producer's fault. Nope, zero input on the whole dealio.

Will there be a sequel, given the budget versus the income? Will it matter? Who knows. Expect to see the Mortal Instruments t-shirts next month at your local Hot Topic and see Cassie Clare in her next adventure, Dancing With Wool!

(It could be wood again. Or Woof? Woozie? Dancing With Who?)

Is it well known that CC doesn't like being photographed? My friend, who loves her work, got that kind of impression because CC didn't retweet her gushing praise over meeting her in real life with a picture attached to said tweet.

According to most of the accounts of her hey-days in HP fandom, she was apparently notorious for not allowing pictures be taken/posted of her, except possibly within her inner circle.

To be honest I can sort of understand why. If you're not young and conventionally attractive, it can make you feel REALLY self-conscious to have pictures taken of you, especially with the camera-adds-10-pounds effect.

Oh absolutely, that wasn't meant as a judgment on the desire to have control over how your image is passed around on the internet.

From what I'd gathered from the various and sundry write-ups, the only reason it kept coming up as kind of over-the-top was because of her behavior at cons she'd attend. Which, I'll be honest, it's been a while since I read the writeup and I don't feel like digging through the ten part bad_penny epic to find the mention of it, so I can't remember if it was about her acting in contradiction to her no photos attitude or that she went above and beyond to avoid them and got upset at people asking to get pictures. Either way, the whole situation was presented as being "off."

(There might have also been something about her complaining about not getting what she felt was proper enough recognition at said con, presented in the context of "well, if you don't want anyone knowing what you look like ... " But again, my memory of that particular bit of CC trivia is sketchy at this point so don't take my word, I could have easily mixed up details with some other oldschool wank.)

Oh, totally. And from the way she blew off aja at that private gathering, I'm inclined to believe there's an element of "Well, if you give me the ~right~ sort of attention, then okay, but if not, begone, peon" in her attitude about pictures.

I can tell you the year I went to her panel (co-lead with Holly Black) at Dragon*Con she most definately didn't want her picture taken; she would turn her head and cover her face when I approached for a picture of the panel.

However, the weekend her movie-that's-not-her-movie premiered, there was a profile of her on Sunday morning. She even gave the interviewer a tour around her house.

[and can I just say? as a seamstress/costumer myself: Cassie claims to be designing and making her own clothing. and her taste SUCKS. "highly unflattering" is the *nicest* thing I can say about her designs]

I got the impression that she didn't want to be photographed at HP events because she didn't want the images to be seen by anyone who knew her professionally as Judith Rumelt--a strict separation of fan-life and real-life. She was working as a writer, after all, and I don't think she wanted her bosses to know about her hobby--especially the plagiarism flap. Now that she's not worried about that, she doesn't seem to be avoiding cameras on principle. She's got to promote herself. It's part of author-life.
