Cassandra Clare and the Panned Picture
When we last left out heroine she was leafing some thorny mahogany pickle to her partner-in-crime to go to her big movie premiere.

Well the first of the Mortal Instrument movies is out, ladies and gents!

While not doing terribly bad (Sony had nothing to lose apparently), it didn't exactly shine either taking in only $9 million through the weekend and $14 million at the moment.

So Cassie Claire, er, Clare, has had to do a wee bit of backpedaling.
Covered here but the important tweets are at the bottom.

You see, she didn't really have any control over the film and so if it bombs, it's the movie producer's fault. Nope, zero input on the whole dealio.

Will there be a sequel, given the budget versus the income? Will it matter? Who knows. Expect to see the Mortal Instruments t-shirts next month at your local Hot Topic and see Cassie Clare in her next adventure, Dancing With Wool!

(It could be wood again. Or Woof? Woozie? Dancing With Who?)

I think SoG will do better too. I've heard people (of various age ranges) talking about Twilight and SoG, I've never outright heard of anyone outside of it's targeted demographic talking about TMI.

That's what a lot of the breed of "Twilight ripoff" movies are failing to realize. You're not going to make a Twilight phenomena based off of a book that connects only with it's demographic and it's demographic alone. Twilight and (presumably) SoG raked in money because it has a wider range of cash pooling in.

Word.

SoG topped the NYT bestseller list, no? That book was big -- like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (another novel I will never, ever read), everybody knew somebody who was reading it and you were either sick of hearing about it ("GODDAMNIT I KNOW THE BACKSTORY I AM FAMILIAR WITH TWILIGHT WANK") or giving it a try for yourself. Whether or not that translates to bringing in a major audience, I have no idea, as I don't know what the SoG fandom is like right now. (Weren't they pretty active at one point? I seem to recall a wank about lingerie parties.) Regardless, it was hard to escape hearing about SoG this time last year.

CC isn't even close to that level of mainstream buzz and it's not because "people don't take genre/YA lit seriously." (That may be true, but that's not an obstacle CC has had a chance to face -- her primary problem is that her books are bad.)
