It's not FOR you, Jen
Nintendo set the Internet afire yesterday with the announcement of a (mostly expected) $50.00 price cut on the Wii U, three different ways to buy Wind Waker (including one with a Ganon action figure)
and oh yeah

They are planning to release a new redesign of the 3DS called a "2DS" on the same day of Pokemon X and Y. It's only $130.00 and looks like a tablet. Supposedly this version is aimed at people who don't want to use the 3D and for children lower than seven years of age.

Which naturally means that the Internet collectively loses their bananas.

Responses range from:
I don't get it
to it's ugly and who is it aimed at
to complaining about complaining about the 2DS is prejudice
SHUT UP AND STOP COMPLAINING IT'S NOT FOR YOU
and SCUZE ME WHERE IS MY 5DS NOW (I like this one a lot)
seriously this is dumb

The biggest trolling went on Nintendo's YouTube page, as trolls and critics went directly to the source. Hence why the announcement is now not showing ratings nor allowing comments (warning: loud 8-bit music).

You can browse the 2DS tumblr tags for more.

Luckily, Iwata and Black Nerd Rants seem to have explained the matter, as the anger has (mostly) quieted down now.

For good times, replace 'the 2ds' with 'my penis'.

T-minus until 3DS snobs saying they got their parents to shelled out the money for the "real thing".

Honestly, I think this is a kick ass idea. I never use the 3D on my 3DS because I go crosseyed whenever I try turning it up on the lowest setting, and I know I'm not alone on this one. If I didn't already have a 3DS, I would have ended up buying one of these, even if the design is a little wonky for adult handling.

Exactly.

I don't own a 3DS but been toying with the idea. However, I know that I will never use the 3D function. So I'll wait until October and then I can look at both options in the stores.

Me, too! And I felt weird paying that much for something when I wasn't going to use its key feature. I'll probably actually get a 2ds when the price comes down a little.

That is the main reason I haven't bought one -- an extra hundred bucks for a function I will have to turn off. I will totally buy a 2DS.

Ditto. My eyes are bad so 3-D does nothing for me. If I didn't have a 3DS already I'd definitely be buying the 2DS.

Same here. There are some 3DS games I want to play, but am not willing to drop $250+ on a 3DS when I'm not gonna use the 3D function. This would be a perfect solution if it could just close shut.

When I saw this, I was like 'if this is cheaper than a 3DS, I want one'. Because I have shitty binocular vision and I have problems with the sort of 3D display technologhy that the 3DS uses, so I would rather not have to pay for the feature.

(I would still have to keep my DS though, until I can replace all my GBA games... or find a cheap GBA.)

Joining the chorus. If it's cheaper than the 170 USD 3DS and still backward-compatible for DS games, consider me sold.

(I like the folding screen and there are games that have utilized it well, but I'm another "never going to be able to use the 3D feature" person.)

But... why can't they make a closing version? I love how you can close the DS and pause the game anywhere. Can the 2DS do that?

If I'd known Nintendo was going to do this, I'd probably have waited and gotten a 2DS instead. But the 3D is useful for catching bugs in Animal Crossing. Otherwise, it just gives me a headache, and the colors aren't as nice in 3D usually. I like the flip closed design though, and the size is nice.

I think a lot of the anger is from people who don't use the 3D (does anyone have the 3D on all the time?) and feel like they wasted their money. But that's what happens with early adopting.

Same. I can't stand the 3D function; I never use it (my daughter adores it though and uses it for everything). So I may seriously consider this if I can get my hands on it and find it as easy to use, from an ergonomic standpoint, as the 3DS itself.

Although I am very, very, VERY fond of the clamshell design...

I still don't have a 3DS, but wasn't looking forward to either the 3D aspect or the price, so I'm liking the 2DS option. I'd've liked if it could close, but I figure I can buy screen protectors with the money I'd save not buying 3D.

Oooh, price drop on the Wii U! I still need to get a Vita (yay for recent price drop on that, too) but after that, I can save up for a Wii U. Upcoming Xeno* game, you will be mine...

No opinion on the 2DS til I've tried out a demo, but the overall logic seems sound.

Mnnrr. Well, I think the people whinging about it are stupid all in the face, but I was excited until I saw it didn't flip closed, and now I'm not again. I already have a 3DS but I am getting a Japanese one in a few months (for STUDY, it's totally for study!). I hate 3D, it makes my eyes all woobly, but I don't think I'd enjoy that design. Second-hand 3DS it is~

Drunk!Me is very enchanted and maybe even touched by the notion of accessibility, and parents playing video games with their children.

Although, of course, once someone brings out Mario Party, it's going to turn into an episode of... of... a thing where everyone swears at each other. That.

On one side, this isn't foldable nor comes in the cute colors of its clam-shelled elder versions.
On the other side, it's compatible with everything in the (3)DS family (even R4 cards for playing fan-translated shit), and its waaaay cheaper than the other versions. Not that the late part matters because I live in a country where the inflation is gigantic, the goverment imposes very heavy regulations for foreign online buying and the ones who will bring the thing to my country will price it a kidney and a lung.
Now I sorta want one, but I'll wait to see hot it feels in adult-sized hands
