It's not FOR you, Jen
Nintendo set the Internet afire yesterday with the announcement of a (mostly expected) $50.00 price cut on the Wii U, three different ways to buy Wind Waker (including one with a Ganon action figure)
and oh yeah

They are planning to release a new redesign of the 3DS called a "2DS" on the same day of Pokemon X and Y. It's only $130.00 and looks like a tablet. Supposedly this version is aimed at people who don't want to use the 3D and for children lower than seven years of age.

Which naturally means that the Internet collectively loses their bananas.

Responses range from:
I don't get it
to it's ugly and who is it aimed at
to complaining about complaining about the 2DS is prejudice
SHUT UP AND STOP COMPLAINING IT'S NOT FOR YOU
and SCUZE ME WHERE IS MY 5DS NOW (I like this one a lot)
seriously this is dumb

The biggest trolling went on Nintendo's YouTube page, as trolls and critics went directly to the source. Hence why the announcement is now not showing ratings nor allowing comments (warning: loud 8-bit music).

You can browse the 2DS tumblr tags for more.

Luckily, Iwata and Black Nerd Rants seem to have explained the matter, as the anger has (mostly) quieted down now.

I bought a 3DS and haven't even had a chance to play a 3D game on it yet. (I really need to get back to it...) But I don't like 3-D in general so I'd probably have bought this instead.

But I do like to carry mine around in my bag so it does help that it closes.

Yeah, the DSi pretty much carried itself and I was expecting the same from the 3DS. The 2DS is smaller than an iPad and probably more portable than the Vita, but it's in some weird new space of "not quite what I was expecting." CHANGE IS SCARY OMG.

It's weird, as all reasoning says the 2DS is probably the better fit for my needs, not to mention cheaper, but... is it a DS without the snap-shut? I was planning to give my DSi to a friend when I upgraded but looking at the 2DS, now I'm wondering how games like Hotel Dusk will replay, since the "book" display was integral to the game. 999 was written for the DS for one scene... hmm. There's no way to know yet, but I wonder how 999, TWEWY, and Cing games would play on the 2DS -- I can't quite see it, which is one reason I'm now waffling and thinking "maybe the 3DS after all." I can't quite see myself lying in bed, thinking "gotta get some sleep" while being absorbed with a "book"-held game on the 2DS.

That is a really good point that I didn't think of. (Having played 999 and Hotel Dusk.) I have the 999 sequel which is a 3DS game but I haven't even started it yet, so I don't know how it works exactly.

I'm not exactly kicking myself over the 3DS anyway, but... yeah, those are some important points.

Hey, can you tell me how the 3d is essential to their bits? I am not familiar with those games and am curious.

Just jumping in here but I tend not to use the 3DS on platforms but I find it nigh essential on action/adventures like Ocarina of Time and Kingdom Hearts. I never put it up very high but being able to estimate how close an enemy is and how far away an object is is actually a big boon that I don't think a lot of people understand until they see it for themselves. I played Ocarina of Time and went back to Mario Galaxy and had an absolutely horrendous time gauging when to jump on enemies because that additional depth was missing.

Which is to say - great for games that exist in 3D; pointless for games that are already designed for 2D experiences.

This. I'm not a huge fan of 3D, but the combat in Kingdom Hearts flows so much more smoothly with it on that I never turned it off. Also, there's a scene in La Cite des Cloches where Frollo's cape swirls at the screen and my heart just about stopped at how awesome it looked.

For the games I was mentioning it's not the 3D being essential -- they're DS games (except for the 999 sequel). But Hotel Dusk for example is played holding the DS like a book, and that wouldn't work at all on the 2DS. In at least one case that I remember you have to be able to open and close it to solve the puzzle.

I guess if someone still had a DS to play DS games they might not care though.

Opening and closing the system is also a thing for one of the DS Zelda games. I hope they fix that!

The more I think about it, the more I lean toward "3DS, actually," if only to preserve the replay experience of the half-dozen games I adore. I don't want to play Hotel Dusk and be thinking BUT IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THAT.

As for VLR, I played it on the Vita, so I'm of no use. It's a bit better gameplay wise (you won't get repeated instructions every time you attempt a puzzle), but that's all I can say without spoilers everywhere.

I don't know of first-party games that require you to close the DS to solve puzzles, but they acknowledge the capability at least - for example, Mario says "Bye-bye!" if you close it while playing New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo is always so diligent about backwards compatibility; surely there will at least be a workaround for that?

The Legend of Zelda: the Phantom Hourglass does: at one point, you have to copy a stone relief to your map, and you do so by closing the game.

There you go, then. I'd be really surprised if they made a system that couldn't play a Zelda game from the previous gen.
