It's not complicated at all! Really, millions of children buy their first Pokémon game every generation, so the series has to appeal to newcomers pretty much by design :)
I haven't played X&Y much but I'm sure you can just jump right in. I've been hearing wonders of them and they have introduced a few gimmicks that might make the game easier for newcomers, as well as an improved online mode.
(If you just wanna try out the gameplay, you can save a few bucks and get Black or White for DS, which are a fan favorite, too.)
But really, in Pokémon you only have to worry about grinding and reading up on weird stats if you plan to engage in competitive PVP.
