It's pretty easy to pick up. The main mechanic is built around taking advantage of type weaknesses (rock paper scissors style) so once you get that down, you're mostly there. And then you go around and collect badges to be TEH BEST.
Honestly though - Pokemon is utterly fascinating. It looks so utterly simple but it's arguably one of the most complicated and well put-together video games out there because there is so much customization and strategy involved. It just depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.
Also fluffy psychic fox wizards. ,3
