I agree with the other comments: It's not too complicated, unless maybe you don't want to get into competitive battling but even that can be figured out with help from the lovely internet. (At least, I'm trying, but I'll probably never end up doing it...)

Sure, there are a ton of Pokemon these days but you don't have to memorize all of them.

If you can play SMT you can definitely play Pokemon.

If you like something with slightly more plot (which is frankly not a strong point of Pokemon, but it's still insanely fun to me) I'd recommend Black or White. But I'm loving Y more than I did Black, mostly because of the nifty new features, so I wouldn't discourage you from trying X or Y if you want to take a chance on a new game.
