My original post is wrong; I could maybe afford two used or ONE new, if they price equivalently ... unfortunately, the best used game store in my area doesn't see a lot of Pokemon trade ins, so I may bite the bullet and try the new, shiny one.
I think I was worried that the games were more like the rumors I'd heard about crazy competitive battling -- you must know which Pokemon to hold on to forever, because it's suddenly useful (thirty levels later...), anyone who chooses X psych is an idiot, etc. But, hell, if I've survived the various branches of SMT and the wars of The World Ends with You, Pokemon can't possibly be worse.
