I was worried until Sep pointed out that this is a game designed for Japanese eight-year-olds, and that at age 47 (I think I was then) I could probably get a handle on it. You can start with any of the main games. Black and White are my faves, but leap right in to X or Y if you like.

The best thing about Pokemon is that the makers go to a great deal of trouble to make sure that you get characters of all ages, genders, and (implied for 8 year olds) orientations. There can be weird racial and cultural stereotypes, but they're more hilarious than offensive (Pokemon's USA is populated by FBI agents, football players, and breakdancers). And in the new game you finally, FINALLY have more hair and skin color options for your character.

The side games are all over the highway, so buy them cheap and used and expect anything from pure joy to someone restraining you from taking a hammer to your DS.
