it looks like redcoats, but it isn't ([info]redcoast) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

"Damon Lindelof was right"
So Castiel had sex with a lady in the last episode of Supernatural, and the fandom lost its mind, which is predictable ... but it lost its collective mind at at WB exec who had apparently just signed up for Twitter. The Fandom DeBunker (sort of like Snopes for the SPN fandom and widely appreciated as impartial) has some screencaps, unfortunately out of order, but you can get the idea. In short, upon being prodded by fans, Chad Kennedy said that it wasn't their intention for Castiel and Dean Winchester to be bi. Kennedy then valiantly took arms against a sea of troubles before ominously tweeting "Damon Lindelof was right" (which I suppose is a reference to this) and bahleeting his Twitter account.

To be clear, nobody is really certain what this guy's role at WB is, what his involvement in the show is, and nobody knew who the hell he was until like ten days ago.

Another fan has the same Twitter screencaps with helpful commentary: "The writers are fuck cowards right now. They know what they did. And they know what they started."

One tumblr user with the screenname Octoswan is not only a SPN fan, but also a housemate of Osric Chau, a young talented actor who works on Supernatural. She writes, "Haha so it’s pretty clear that Chad Kennedy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Poor guy walked into the belly of the beast and poked the bear with a big pointy stick. He said some dumb, uninformed things about a sensitive subject in a fandom he’s admitted to only just becoming aware of. Methinks he didn’t get the memo. Totally his fault for not doing his homework, but gosh, what a silly gaffe! //sigh" And then suggests that fandom go listen to some nice music or read a good book.

Octoswan texts Osric Chau about the kerfuffle, and he writes a note on Twitlonger trying to help fans feel better, including bits about puppies, kittens, and hot chocolate. It appears to work. Writer Adam Glass also takes to Twitter to remind people that Chad Kennedy doesn't actually write the show, and then he adds a hint: "If u asks @PaulMcCartney what does a song he wrote mean, he'd tell you he had some ideas but would be more interested in what you think. BTW."

Pokemon fans: a question.

This is embarrassing.

I have never played Pokemon. I didn't even know what a "mon" really was until I was clicking around TVTropes from a Shin Megami Tensei entry (so... now I know what a mon is, because I started with the trope deconstruction? Awesome).

I have a 3DS, enough money to buy maybe one used game or one new to start (depends), and serious love for MY POKEMONS. LET ME SHOW YOU MY POKEMONS. (best macro ever), but no idea where to start with this series. Is there a game that's particularly friendly to new players? Or should I just start with X or Y on the 3DS? Is this series really so insanely complicated that I'm doomed to being locked out of the loop forever?

While researching the games, my mother tried to convince me that I did, in fact, own a Pokemon, but it turned out she was thinking of Pogs.

It's not complicated at all! Really, millions of children buy their first Pokémon game every generation, so the series has to appeal to newcomers pretty much by design :)
I haven't played X&Y much but I'm sure you can just jump right in. I've been hearing wonders of them and they have introduced a few gimmicks that might make the game easier for newcomers, as well as an improved online mode.
(If you just wanna try out the gameplay, you can save a few bucks and get Black or White for DS, which are a fan favorite, too.)
But really, in Pokémon you only have to worry about grinding and reading up on weird stats if you plan to engage in competitive PVP.

As an SMT wonk, I am all about weird stats. ;) Good to know and thank you! I'll be honest: I don't know anyone who plays Pokemon (no siblings, no contact with kids), so I kind of missed what it was all about until I found out via SMT.

I did meet someone who asked, with all sincerity, to let them show me their Pokemons... I should have paid attention but I was busy trying not to laugh at the unintentional meme.

It's pretty easy to pick up. The main mechanic is built around taking advantage of type weaknesses (rock paper scissors style) so once you get that down, you're mostly there. And then you go around and collect badges to be TEH BEST.

Honestly though - Pokemon is utterly fascinating. It looks so utterly simple but it's arguably one of the most complicated and well put-together video games out there because there is so much customization and strategy involved. It just depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.

Also fluffy psychic fox wizards. ,3

I picked the fire starter, which I have never done before, just because it was so cute. I had no idea what it evolved into and I was so happy when I found out. He's kind of sexy in a way. I am going to hell and I know it.

I wanted a female starter but I didn't have the patience to restart the game until I got one. I did get the other two through the GTS, and all the Kanto ones too, but everybody is male.

I love your theme names though! I feel better now that I named my starter Farin after my favorite musician. (I suppose I could breed the other two and name them after his bandmates, but I'm using their names for other Pokemon instead. But that's not as clever as your names anyway!)

The nice thing about Pokemon is you can start basically with any of the main games and be perfectly fine. The game explains new things to you as they come up (I think nearly every old school Pokemon player has a moment when they reach that part in each game when an NPC goes to teach you how to catch a Pokemon and you find yourself yelling "I know how to catch a damn Pokemon, just give me the pokeballs already!"). If you're at all worried about being a bit overwhelmed I'd probably suggest starting with Black and White because it doesn't have quite as many new shiny bits in it, plus for the main game you can only catch Pokemon from that region so there's not as many thrown at you for you to try and remember.

(Also funny that you mention Shin Megami Tensei, because I was once trying to explain the battle mechanics with the demons in SMT to someone and ended up with "It's a little like Pokemon, but instead of Pikachu you use Satan.")

Awesome! I got back into gaming this year -- turns out it's one of the only things that I can do while dealing with a disabling illness -- and Persona 3 FES just happened to be one of my first PS2 games... and it was perfect. That being said, I've demo'd a Pokemon game and sometimes you just want your combat with a side of cute, you know? Or something similar but new. (Devil Survivor, you suck.) My main concern was jumping in and finding the right Pokemon game -- the SMT games have so many branches, so starting with the DS titles will give you a different take on the series than the PS2 ones, etc., and since I kept seeing those two-part Pokemon titles, I was wondering if I'd be hopelessly lost if I could only afford Black but not White.

Satan and Helel, preferably. ;) Yeah, explaining SMT games to people... "It's kinda like Sailor Moon, in that I'm chosen and have to activate my powers but balance it with going to school... and now I shoot myself in the head and a helpful monster comes out."

Funny you mention that because I've only played the DS games, not the PS ones, and I loved both Devil Survivor games :P I'm in the middle of SMT IV right now but I've stopped playing it for the moment because, well, new Pokemon game. (My first SMT game was actually Last Bible, the Gameboy Color game renamed Revelations: the Demon Slayer in the US. I saw the game mentioned on tvtropes once and found myself thinking that, gee, I'd really liked that old game and I wonder if they ever made any more in that franchise.)

But yeah, Pokemon is way easier to keep track of than the SMT franchise. The main titles have the same structure, and games in the same Gen are even more alike -- Black and White are the exact same game except you get a different legendary and certain Pokemon are only available in one or the other. Of the DS titles, the only ones I wouldn't recommend to a new player would probably be Black 2 and White 2, just because they're sequels to the first games and there are some storyline things that might be a little confusing. The franchise only gets confusing if you jump to the spinoff games like Rancher and Mystery Dungeon, but even those can be split off into their own little bubbles and don't effect the main games in any way.

I will also add that (to me at least) the level-up and move system is far less confusing in Pokemon. They are set levels for moves and you don't have to worry about what monsters you mix together to get a surprise creature - you just evolve and you're set.

Unless you get into breeding. Then all sorts of crazy things pop up but it's still somewhat clear-cut about inheritance systems.

I agree with the other comments: It's not too complicated, unless maybe you don't want to get into competitive battling but even that can be figured out with help from the lovely internet. (At least, I'm trying, but I'll probably never end up doing it...)

Sure, there are a ton of Pokemon these days but you don't have to memorize all of them.

If you can play SMT you can definitely play Pokemon.

If you like something with slightly more plot (which is frankly not a strong point of Pokemon, but it's still insanely fun to me) I'd recommend Black or White. But I'm loving Y more than I did Black, mostly because of the nifty new features, so I wouldn't discourage you from trying X or Y if you want to take a chance on a new game.

My original post is wrong; I could maybe afford two used or ONE new, if they price equivalently ... unfortunately, the best used game store in my area doesn't see a lot of Pokemon trade ins, so I may bite the bullet and try the new, shiny one.

I think I was worried that the games were more like the rumors I'd heard about crazy competitive battling -- you must know which Pokemon to hold on to forever, because it's suddenly useful (thirty levels later...), anyone who chooses X psych is an idiot, etc. But, hell, if I've survived the various branches of SMT and the wars of The World Ends with You, Pokemon can't possibly be worse.

I couldn't even play The World Ends With You because it was just too complicated for me, so you're ahead of me already.

And I know Pokemon purists would probably look down on me for the way I play the game, not even paying attention to some aspects that some people consider all-important, but I'm the one playing it and I do have fun, so...

I ignore any Pokemon purists who get snooty about how anyone could possibly play the game without resetting a thousand times for the best nature and blah blah stats blah. I've been playing the games since the original Blue and Red and I still form my teams based on a combination of having the right mix of types in order to balance strengths vs. weaknesses...and which Pokemon are the cutest. (Current example: my team in X right now has a Dedenne in it. I know it's yet another one of those Pikachu clones that probably have shit stats and I don't care cause it knocks stuff out when I tell it to and it's adorable. And way better than that little fucker Emolga.)

Also OMG I am so in love with Wonder Trade I can't even.

I used to do random triple rotation battles on Black even though my Pokemon weren't even EV trained or anything like that at all. I won about a third of the time, which was often enough to make me feel like I wasn't totally embarrassing myself. So I guess there were some other casual people like me doing the random battles, and I did have fun doing it.

But I don't know if all the ways to internet battle with random people on X and Y are full of only people who take it so seriously I'd only annoy them.

(At one point I decided to have a Real Battling Team. I bred a Mienfoo with very good stats and that was about as far as I got before I gave up. But I did get a shiny doing the breeding so that was cool. I might try again.)

And I mostly breed my starters just so I can have something halfway decent to give away on Wonder Trade, because I love it too. Someone in Japan sent me a Ditto yesterday.

Wow, now I am making it sound complicated, but the game itself still really isn't.

I was worried until Sep pointed out that this is a game designed for Japanese eight-year-olds, and that at age 47 (I think I was then) I could probably get a handle on it. You can start with any of the main games. Black and White are my faves, but leap right in to X or Y if you like.

The best thing about Pokemon is that the makers go to a great deal of trouble to make sure that you get characters of all ages, genders, and (implied for 8 year olds) orientations. There can be weird racial and cultural stereotypes, but they're more hilarious than offensive (Pokemon's USA is populated by FBI agents, football players, and breakdancers). And in the new game you finally, FINALLY have more hair and skin color options for your character.

The side games are all over the highway, so buy them cheap and used and expect anything from pure joy to someone restraining you from taking a hammer to your DS.

I'm personally really fond of Mystery Dungeon. I'd recommend Explorers of Sky to anyone looking for a high dose of cute combined with a surprisingly high amount of plot for a Pokemon game.

I didn't play the latest one though -- it got such bad reviews I didn't want to spend money on it.

I never tried any of the other side games.

The newest Mystery Dungeon was really disappointing. That's probably my favorite of the Pokemon spinoff series, but the new one was way too short and there didn't have half the postgame the others do. I'd second Explorers of the Sky for anyone wanting to check it out.

As far as the other side games go: the Pokemon Ranger games are pretty fun but if you get sore wrists at all playing the DS don't buy them because it will not go well (you catch and battle by drawing circles with your stylus, which is harder than it sounds). Rumble Blast was all right but kinda short. Conquest is really different and I liked it a lot, but it can be pretty difficult especially once you hit the post-game missions. Pokemon Dash is an abomination and deserves to be set on fire.
