TBH as someone else said in one of those links - this time he's picked the perfect hunting ground.
Tumblr already is predisposed to support and rally around people who are openly confronting their mental health problems and also those who are non-cis. I don't know if he's talked about the latter but he posts often about the former. (Apparently he only got like, 25 hours of sleep all year.)
He also picked gold in supporting Destiel, where many of the fans already have a us versus them mentality. And the fact that he does artwork / writing doesn't hurt his case at all. And he still has his following from his massive HP fic.
In short - he's in the perfect place to work on a BNF following and the perfect platform wherein his flaws will be seen as a brave person sharing their struggles. And no one wants to think about what has been documented because OPEN MINDEDNESS AND FORGIVENESS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.
