Victoria Bitter: The Embittering
Oh, how nice, someone's creating a little convention for the Supernatural fandom, and they're looking for staff members. Looks like the position of Event Director has already been filled, though, by one...

Andrew Blake. AKA thanfiction. AKA Victoria Bitter.

The event hasn't received much attention thus far, but everyone who's responded to the original post looks enthusiastic and willing to throw money at the idea.

Unsurprisingly, people from other corners of the fandom have begun to speak up, sharing stories of past exploits and linking to the book written by a previous VB/AB/TF victim.

Andy, aware of his reputation in fandom, has made several posts on his most recent Tumblr in the past few months, saying that the past is behind him and refuting the claims of people who are preemptively warning the SPN fandom about his exploits.

Only time will tell if he has really changed his ways, but all signs point to no.

One final note: misgendering is not cool. There are about 10 million reasons to mock Andrew Blake, but his gender identity is not one of them.

ETA: Now matured from "having just finished his 20s" to "30 with a lot of job experience", our hero has posted more details about the application process, explaining that everything might go wrong and that's just the way that cons work, and that pretty much all of the cool stuff mentioned thus far might be too expensive if they don't get enough participants. (thanks luxshine!)

You're faster than I am!

And speaking of fast ... At least, if I'm understanding things right, they didn't actually collect any money from people yet, right?

This whole thing had a weird fastness to it. I'm not in this fandom, but checking on Wikipedia tells me the season finale for this season should be on March 18th. Given that the first post for it on Tumblr was two weeks ago, this idea was doomed from the get go, even when you take out the idea of scams.

Disclaimer: I've only been watching the show for the past two years (though I haven't kept up with this season) and I don't think I follow anyone on Tumblr who isn't at least peripherally interested in the show, even if they've stopped watching it. That and I don't really go digging through the tags (which is probably how I missed Andy's involvement in the fandom before this).

But I will say this for what I've observed in my little corner of Tumblr/SPN fandom: Everything about this whole season has seemed to move fast, both in the series and the fandom. I mean it started late and immediately jumped into killing every character who'd managed to escape it in previous seasons, wrote out one of their most popular recurring characters, and so on. I don't think I haven't seen one person still actively watching it who hasn't talked about the finale at least once in the past couple of months despite not having any idea what's going to happen.

But yeah, I guess the other thing I've noticed about SPN fandom is that big fandom events don't tend to do very well, if they ever get off the ground to begin with, if they're not explicitly backed by a corporation, as I'm led to believe most, if not all of the SPN conventions are.

The whole culture of SPN fandom is just really weird. Which is maybe why he didn't gain as much traction there as he has in the past.

I have a few followers that are holding on to Supernatural, but from my little slice of internet, it seems like there's trouble in paradise? Going to Wikipedia again for viewer counts makes me curious as to how SPN is holding on at all, compared to, say, Agents of SHIELD, which has (even as a new series) tripled SPN's views.

Then again, looking at SPN's viewership counts, it frequently bounces between 1.80 mil and 2.6 mil for this season and the last. Maybe that's a gold star for the CW's standards? It just looks really skimpy for me. Then again I'm partly bitter because Hannibal barely managed to hang on to it's viewership with the same numbers and only squeaked into a second season.

Oh there definitely is, and honestly, I know they're confirmed by another season, but it sure feels like everyone involved in actually making the show is ready to just let go.

I'm not sure how they rank interest, though? Like, as far as viewership goes, does that also include counts for streaming on their website? Do they include convention attendance when they're gauging interest? How are their DVD and itunes sales? What about the anime? It doesn't seem like they have a whole lot of merchandise that they can hang onto besides the novel series, which I'm sure would continue as long as they were selling whether or not the show was still going.

Well there is a lot of merch -- you just have to go to the over priced cons to get it.

There's a ton of new merch at retail venues like Hot Topic. Only took, what, ten years for them to figure it out?

SPN's ratings haven't been stellar, but it is valued by advertisers because it's supposedly one of the highest rated shows for families viewing together.

I'm not quite sure why the idea of families watching SPN together horrifies me, but it does.

Perhaps because it means more people potentially lapping up the misogyny and ridiculous macho posturing?

CW's rating standards are much lower than the other networks.

Yeah, I think for CW SPN has decent ratings. Plus a very very rabid following that spends tons and tons of money at over priced cons (that CW gets a nice cut from).

From what I can tell the show itself is fine - especially as there really aren't any other popular CW shows besides Vampire Diaries.

That said the fandom is now incredibly segmented via LJ, Tumblr, forums, etc. and even MORE segmented with Destiel / Dean fans / Sam fans / Castiel fans. And while it's not overt, I think there is less crossover now that the angst and brother-blaming is a major plot point.

Which both hurts and helps Andy and his clique.

[ ... ] there really aren't any other popular CW shows besides Vampire Diaries.

I've been seeing a lot of talk about Arrow and I know they apparently got renewed for a second season.

I mean, you won't see me praising it (the first episode bored me to tears, I have a tolerate-loath relationship with the main character in every other medium, and I won't ever forgive them for making Roy Harper a brunette), but it seems popular enough.
