These things really do go in cycles...
c/p'd from Mousie's hard work:

Emma Watson is guest editing a British magazine that comes out on Thursday.

In it, supposedly JK Rowling shares her regret for making a certain pairing canon over another one.

Nowadays she admits she got it wrong - she should have shipped Harry / Hermione.

ONTD jumps on the bandwagon first with predictable splooge. 2600+ comments and gong. Wank_report anonymouse captured their favorites:

Ron's an asshole! No, Hermione's abusive!

Someone mentions Hermione/Draco, spawning a thread about whether Draco is an irredeemable racist. Bonus: passive-aggressive use of "gurl". I guess it's the new "sweetie"? http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/85367803.html?thread=14993142779#t14993142779

I'm...not even sure what's happening in this thread. But I know I can't look away.

Ah, I knew this would explode into a wanky ship war, when I saw the article. Potter fandom, you do not disappoint.

If the Harmonians were reasonable, they would realize that all this gives the H/Hr shippers is greater plausibility to take it AU and make H/Hr happen. Which is great for H/Hr fic writers and for the H/Hr ship (gives it some more weight, even though it was never canon), IMO. 'Cause JKR would have needed to rewrite some stuff with regard to Harry and Hermione in canon, to make them work in canon (make them not stick with the brother/sister feeling, have Hermione give up on Ron, have Harry not fall for Ginny, etc.) (And even if Ron wasn't right for Hermione, that doesn't mean the Ron the Death Eater trope has got it right, yeesh!)

And if the hardcore R/Hr peeps were reasonable, they'd realize they still have canon, and the fact that it's not impossible for it to work out, because it did, in spite of the odds. Sounds like JKR sees R/Hr being happy and healthy in canon, despite the implausibility of that actually happening were it real life, that she now sees, for whatever reasons. Granted, I can understand the disappointment (and not looking forward to how the Harmonians are going to run with hit), but it's not the end of the world.

And I don't think that JKR necessarily regrets writing R/Hr for her wish fulfillment, although she is definitely sorry if her admitting it now causes people heartbreak, IMO. Maybe she regrets writing it that way, or maybe she's just seeing how she did write it that way as wish fulfillment, after she's had some time and distance, and feels it best to just admit that now that she's realized it, but is sorry if that upsets the fans. I'll reserve my judgment on that for when I see the full interview, although I could see how JKR could regret it if she thinks it encourages people to believe it will likely work out to stay with someone who needs to change significantly before you can be truly happy and healthy with them.

But of course, the Harmonians and hardcore R/Hr shippers are not going to be reasonable, because this is Potter fandom, and there will be wank.

This wank is reminding me the weird "happily ever after" type of idea that happened among both shipper camps. It's as if nobody was allowed to think that what makes a pairing interesting is maybe that they don't actually end up happily ever after, but have to work at their relationship and talk things out on occasion, and maybe that's fine, and maybe the hottest fic can be the make-up sex and the sweetest moments can actually be that the troubles they had, they still stayed together. Both sides had this incredibly rosy view of relationships.

I see this all over the place. I'm not really sure what kind of relationship people who constantly carp that romantic relationships in media aren't "healthy" want to see, except that I'm sure it would put me to sleep.

Well, one person's heaven is another person's hell, and visa versa (if we're just talking preference). ;P

I'm sure some people are having too narrow a view of healthy, too.

I think it'd be nice to see some acknowledgment that even good relationships are going to have bad moments and maybe wanting to see that even 'happily ever after' might involve some bumps.

Yeah, IA, there are peeps on both sides of the ship war who have a super rosy view of relationships or how they should be, and think that's the only way a ship should be shipped. :/

The people who think that it has to be all fluff all the time, for anyone to like it, are being closed minded and unrealistic, IMO. (Same as if someone thought it had to be all angst all the time, or always had to be a rapid constant cycle of fighting and making up, or had to be some particular mix of fluff/angst, for anyone to find it interesting.) For me, truly "happily ever after" doesn't equal "no troubles", only that the couple made it through/keeps making it through and is ultimately/overall happy and healthy. Personally, I tend to like to see some fluff, with occasional angst, a good balance of the two, although sometimes I'm in more of a fluff mood and others more of an angst mood, if it isn't too unrelenting, either way. Too much angst maxes me out and becomes unenjoyable, too much fluff gets boring, after a while. Monica/Chandler on Friends are probably my ideal mix of fluff/angst (not that I always want that ideal mix). I like Ross/Rachel, too. Heck, I ship Snape/Lily (in an AU where Snape starts making better choices, before it's too late for the ship to set sail and ultimately be happy and healthy), so it's not like I don't find overcoming some serious shit to be interesting and enjoyable to read/write about. But I digress.

The first time Cecil on Welcome to Night Vale said that Carlos did something that bugged him, a chunk of the fandom were all WELL GUESS THIS RELATIONSHIP IS OVER. I assume they're all twelve.
