DashCon or DashConned?
*So... is there any chance of a write up on DashCon happening? Because I am hearing rumours of it being spectacular, but have been completely unable to find much because Tumblr is terrible.

Thank you FW for coming through:

DashCon is a convention run by... possibly 17 year olds that was supposed to be a celebration of all things Tumblr Fandom. Unfortunately, things got sketchy quickly when con-goers were herded into the convention ballroom and told that they needed to raise $17,000 by 10 PM or the con would be shut down.

Donations poured in, though anons reporting from DashCon appear skeptical.

Questions arose. Skepticism continues to mount despite DashCon "response".

Popcorn continues to be consumed, as ONTD gets in on the action.

There's some positive word on the street from DashCon is a bit of a mixed bag. From the curt to the effusive.

More sources in the comments since I am having trouble keeping up reading and adding them all at the moment.

Edited to add:
A statement from Welcome To Night Vale about why they dropped out.
More on WTF is Wrong with DashCon in list format.

7/14/2014 - DashCon carnage continues (Sorry if I miss something but you guys are still awesome at bringing the links):
* Baker Street Babes (who were initially curt but polite about DashCon) reveal that DashCon did not in fact "take care of" their previously comped room that became a room they had to pay for that was a computer glitch that is now again having to be paid for by the Baker Street Babes.
* The Random Act - Misha Collins' charity has disavowed all knowledge of DashCon fundraising in their name.
* Mark Reads had a pretty good time, and debunks several of the rumours re: DashCon.
* DashCon stories have hit Jezebel and io9, though given current state of Gawker sites, they're basically Tumblr/meme curators by this point, so YMMV on relevance.
* DashCon organizer cries. I guess this is supposed to be guilt-inducing? Are these people too young to remember that we eat our young around here. Not linking because not 100% sure if the rumours that they are underaged are true.
* There was NO PUBLIC MASTURBATION at the BDSM panel. The fact that I even had to say this just tells you everything, doesn't it?
* The WTNV confirm they took in Noelle Stevenson. Dammit fandom_wank, I had to figure out how to direct link to tweets for you.
* Practically nobody believes DashCon's staff saying WTNV "just walked".
* Best "masterpost" of DashCon debacle I've seen on Tumblr. Now with corrections.
* Linkdump by [info]mindset
* DashCon staff AMA just venting on 4Chan

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to collapse.

WTNV Panel

Woooooow, apparently when staff broke the news to the people waiting for the WTNV panel, their opening line on the explanation was "Night Vale just walked."

Not even "we had a complication," just straight up, "this is all Night Vale's fault, jsyk."

So much spam, I'm sorry, this is just truly fascinating and it's always exciting these days to see Fandom Wank active again.

Anyway, here's a write-up from another group of guests (The Baker Street Babes Podcast) about their experience at DashCon.

The main highlight being that they decided to leave the con early and, when they went to check out of the hotel, they found that their rooms had been taken off the list of rooms to be paid by DashCon.

DashCon staff has since gotten in touch with them claiming that it was a mistake and they're "settling the accounts with the hotel."

So, I probably should have thought of this last night, but it's come to my attention that many of the people involved in this debacle are quite possibly minors.

Please be careful with your linking. If you've linked already, please doublecheck to make sure you're not linking to minors. If there's something that needs to be removed, just email the mods and we'll take care of it.

There are a couple of threads on failfandomanon. Highlights include Twitter sass from the WTNV folks, and an extra hour in the ball pit (which both the Dashcon and WTNV tags on Tumblr are having a lot of fun with), and a Producers parody.

I can't believe I actually went to this. (Oh don't look at me like that. I went for the Night Vale stuff. So sue me). I, somehow, managed to miss most of the worst of the batshit but even what I did see was fairly trainwrecky.

Seriously, this whole debacle was such a disappointment.

Were I more musically talented, I'd be writing a parody of "Schadenfreude" about this whole thing. Alas, I am not. (Someone get on this, stat)

In the meantime, I'll continue to point, mock, and wonder about the sanity of those con-goers who are putting a rosy spin on things.

So let me get this straight. They rounded all the congoers up, put them in a ballroom, gave them the impression that they were stuck there until they handed over their money and/or that they would be directly responsible for ruining everybody's weekend if they didn't, collected money in a very public way that allowed everyone to see who was contributing, and suggested that the money was a loan and not a gift but didn't give receipts. And the people being coerced into giving up their money were mostly teenagers without their parents.

Oh.

This is.... it's so enormous, and glorious. I saw it breaking on tumblr first, and I should have jumped right here for the tasty, tasty tears of the wankers. It even hit MetaFilter.

Astonishing.

I think one of the best/worst parts is hearing from the heads of "committees" who couldn't get the people running the show to respond to them - and the image of skype chats with hundreds of people and failing tech is just...

I mean, wow.

My god this gives me such a schadenboner. I've been tracking this clusterfuck as it's passed by my dash over the last couple days and it's gotten even crazier.

I'm going to go a complete non sequitur and talk about some occasionally detestable, but importantly competent, people. Penny Arcade, at the first PAX, had no fucking clue what they were doing. They had never run a con, and the only people they contacted for their expertise basically gave them no help whatsoever. The first PAX was, by all reports, very disorganized and had a lot of problems, but they managed to make it work, with competent volunteers and the willingness to nearly kill themselves to make it all happen. PAX is now a massive juggernaut of a convention and probably the most fun you can have as a gamer of any type.

Now, not everybody has a Robert Khoo to get them there, but the "it's a first-year con, you have to expect some bugs" excuse has limits. Every con had a first year. The ones that are still around managed to make it work. This level of failure is exceptional, and I'm genuinely impressed at the number and severity of fuckups.

Of course, I would have started running for the hills at "unofficial Tumblr convention", mostly because I have no faith in the tumblr userbase's ability to do anything with a unified goal.

Apparently, DashCon was saying that they were affiliated with The Random Act as their charity to raise money for. (Not THAT surprising when there's a lot of SPN fans and the charity was started by Misha Collins.)

The Random Act has asked them to remove the wording on their site and has explained more about the so-called "affiliation"

2015 in Indy?
[info]killer_gopher

You know, after looking around I know they're planning to use the Indiana Convention Center for 2015...which will be interesting. It's also a place I've dealt with business-wise and a personally. Price wise, it'll likely be much less than the place in Schaumburg, but I see it as an even worse fit.

First off, the place is huge. We ahd the NFL combine, Circle of Stars Gymnastic/cheer comp, and the dance seminar I was part of - plus there were still a lot rooms/ballrooms open for smaller events and that was before the Lucas Oil expansion. Basically, they have several contracted service that you have to use. They're not as willing to work something that doesn't conform to their standards and security is very strict. Plus, no outside food/drinks - so no ordering pizza/bringing it in from an outside source, you must you their service. Plus, signs must meet their codes and can only be placed in certain areas - and they place them all.

I don't know how to explain it, it's a beautiful place, but has 'strict' standards. They aren't going to put up with something like this train wreck. It's not a 'casual' atmosphere.

Long story short - not a good fit, but it could only add to the trainwreck that is dashcon. If these people are serious, look outside the Indy area for Holiday Inn/Comfort Inn level hotel who will be more willing to work with them or even Fort Wayne Convention Center - staff was easier to work with (basing this on 2004-06 dealings with both.)

Oh, one other thing, all vendors had to have a permit. No matter what they were selling, security went through and checked. We had someone doing portraits that wasn't allowed to set up, because he didn't get his If it's run like it was this year, they wouldn't have made it beyond the first day (or heck, even set up!) Honestly, not sure how the fan things work with artists alleys, but in most do they have to have permits and collect taxes?

I'm curious about the basic legality of the fan auctions that were meant to raise money for this. If it's all derivative works, don't you need permission from the copyright owner before you sell them?

(and that's on top of the issue of minors running auctions in the first place)

Also curious what happened to the $4000 they apparently raised through indiegogo (since unlike kickstarter you do get the money even if you don't reach your goal). What was that spent on, if not guests or hiring the hotel?
