Entry tags:at least no one's knotting, bitter so bitter, boo hoo, censorship, crazy people, entitlement, fan rage, fandom: sailor moon, flouncing, i don't know my rights, let's all get along, misplaced anger, persecution, ruining your childhood, she's on a mission guys!, sub vs. dub, suck it up and deal, taking it too seriously, the gay is canon, think of the fictional children

In the name of the Moon, I will boycott you
Nangbaby is boycotting Sailor Moon for crimes against humanity wait, wait, no, sorry, that was me listening to the language, not the message. Sorry, Viz is doing a redub with the cast's original names.

To quote Nangbaby so I don't misrepresent her:

I promised that I would leave the fandom if this happened and I will. As much as I would like to make it an immediate exit, please note that I have spent a significant chunk of my life loving Serena as Sailor Moon, Alan, Ann, Lita, Game Machine Man, Bertie, and Malachite (just like the sword in Ogre Battle). Forgive the dramatic death throes.

For those of you who think I’m overreacting, let me make this clear. Viz has essentially announced that the Sailor Moon loved by millions, the girl named Serena whose opening theme proclaims she fights evil by moonlight and wins love by daylight. is no more. She has been erased from continuity Sonja Belmont-style.

Now, I grew up with Sailor Moon like any red-blooded nineties Canadian, but I'm not sure quite sure what she's getting at. But she goes on to say:

Now imagine if George Lucas has in addition to making those changes, stated Chewbacca was actually canonically a lesbian and changed the scenes to make that very obvious, as well as claimed the Jedi’s goal was to oversee the development of humanity according to the Force and lead them into the light through taking over the Empire.

Now, this may have unfortunate implications with the fact the redub re-adds two original canon gay couples, but I'm also pretty sure Lucas did that anyway and we just moved on.

I mean, we all remember the makeout scene after Leia says she'd rather kiss a Wookie, right? And the interview with Chewbacca's new dub voice, Tilda Swinton, where she says she's proud to play Chewbacca as he was always meant to be - a proud queer woman covered head to toe in fur. She even did the interview in the Chewbacca costume, despite her height and the fact she actually did the whole role from a recording booth.

Sorry, I've deviated.

She knows who to blame, and she's darn well gonna do it.

As a normal person*, I have no powers against this blatant disenfranchisement and marginalization except that of my limited wallet, and I will say this. From this day forward I will not pay for an official piece of Sailor Moon material released from this date forward. I am boycotting Sailor Moon for the actions of Naoko Takeuchi — make no mistake Viz and Toei Animation are culpable as well, but in their defense, they are transparent in that they make the real culprit clear — the woman who authored the manga that inspired the anime and now has taken over the inspired creation.

She understands it's going to be a hard path, but she will face that path. And she's doing it because god help you if you call Sailor Moon Usagi.

I know my action alone is meaningless, but I encourage others to not pay and not give anything official any more time. It’s not enough to complain. We have to take the power away from them that we gave them to redress this wrong.

Sailor Moon CX will no longer update. As much as I would love to finish the story in a “Take That” no one reads it and no one cares, so I am abandoning it. I won’t burden people with my presence much longer.

To conclude, Viz is a monster, Naoko Takeuchi is a monster, and she's not posting her fanfic anymore.

Also there's a site!

The post concludes:

Edit: I’m back.

Yes how dare the original author who created the series have a say in the TV show!

So who else is watching the new Sailor Moon Crystal series?

She's a true fiend. She's just coasting on the cartoon's popularity, you know. Stealing their rightful fame.

I WANT to, but haven't had the chance. My internet's been so shit I can't get at the sites with it and when I do have a choice of what to grab, it's Murdoch Mysteries because papa needs his Canadian Victorian murder because he's turning into his grandmother.

The animation in Crystal is really nice. And there don't seem to be any big changes to the story so far.

I did really like the designs. They were fairy-ish.

I think they're favoring the style of the manga.

Aye, they are. I just think with the particular colouring scheme they're using, it looks like fairies.

lmao you must be joking.

I mean, I wouldn't think it'd be that tall an order to expect the remake to have better animation than a 13-year-old on deviantart.

I have no strong feelings either way about the series and only watched the first episode for nostalgia's sake, and I think this person in the OP is being ridiculous.

But

"nothing's perfect"

is the only response you have to this travesty they're passing off as prime-cut animation? lol.

You do realize that I have no control over the animation style of the new series right? I'm enjoying it if you don't that's fine. I have no idea why you're mad at me for, well, I'm not sure what.

Oh gosh thanks for reminding me you weren't the animator! Apologies apologies.

You made a comment. I called the taste in that comment into question. That's kind of how a give and take works.

Also wow you must have some thin skin if you think this is "getting mad" at you?? But I see from your replies to almost every single comment in this post you're really invested...

Wow I wasn't aware everyone in Japan had to watch this upon pain of death. You poor thing somehow not being able to figure out how to watch something else. Maybe when you learn that you'll learn that pissying over something other people are enjoying isn't edgy.

Uuuhg. The art scared me off the new show. Clips I saw were badly done or almost completely expressionless (especially when compared to the old ones more cartoony but very expressive faces)

I just can't with it

Irrelevant to the wank, I just looked up Murdoch Mysteries and I might have to check it out.

(I don't think I'm turning into my grandmother though, she had a thing for game shows.)

Relevant to the wank, I could go for Tilda Swinton voicing a lesbian Chewbacca.

Oh, it's fun. The main character is kind of a constantly uncomfortable robot (and my personal theory that he's an ancestor of Benton Fraser), the pathologist is this nifty lady, the chief inspector is horrible and thinks he's the world's greatest mentor, and there's this cute little constable named Crabtree with a thousand aunts.

It's also really cool seeing that style of dress and *Canadian* accents coming out of their mouths. I don't see a lot of my country represented in the fiction I watch.

My grandma loves murder so much. You have no idea.

And I believe LesbiChew with Tilda Swinton is totally plausible.

Haven't had the time to look it up.

Also, I had no problems with the character designs in the manga, but not sure I'd like them in anime form. The trailer and bits I've seen so far kind of made me think of stretchy limbs like Mr. Fantastic.

Yeah, they're a bit stretchy/skinny/Gumby-like at times, but they're often very pretty, and I think I kind of like the retro-ish vibe they've got going on. The faces sort of remind me of Kodomo no Omocha or Marmalade Boy, maybe, which is weird because I was never in love with the look of either of those, but it's so much like the original manga that it kind of works?

Or maybe I'm just so happy that there's new Sailor Moon that I'm willing to forgive it anything, that could also be it. XD

I'm torn on whether I want to budget money for the new release by Viz, since they're supposed to do the entire run.

IMO the character designs in the manga made it look dreamy and wispy and fanciful, which works on a still medium. Not so much in anime, unless you're CLAMP, and then you'd have to add a crapload of details. :) And Marmalade Boy was published at around the same time (don't remember when Kodomo no Omocha was out), so it makes sense to connect it to Sailor Moon.
