Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Impish
Entry tags:anti-fw, my pretension let me show you it

And so we are all united in the grand Circle Of Wank
Let me preface the following with two disclaimers:

1) I do not believe I have ever actually posted here. This link was handed to me on IM by a friend who knows I hang out here. If it's deliberate wankbait, WTF -- I'll take it and see what happens.(1)

2) I am NOT posting this because it is an attack on FW. I am posting it because it is without a doubt one of the most puffed-up piles of steaming self-importance I have seen in some time. Let's start with just a taste...

You probably know that a) most of my published work is Silmarillion-based, and b) my magnum opus is the Leithian Script, the modern-language play version of the Lay of Leithian, and that especially in the most recent segments, it deals — as does the Silmarillion explicitly, and to a more subtle degree LOTR and The Hobbit as well — with questions of Good and Evil, Fate and Free Will, Justice and 'The Gods' and all that other fun stuff.

That's nice, sweetheart. But who the hell ARE you?(2)

So! What we have here is an exhaustive analysis of this-here community, complete with pseudo-psychoanalysis via bitter generalizations, petty name-calling (3), accusations of super-sekrit handshakes, Pointed Capitalization, smug literary references, wildly overwrought metaphors(4), invocation of Snacky's Law (5), and (my personal favorite) inventing new words with the air of one who expects them to be adopted immediately by adoring fans.

In short: this is effin' hilarious. I need say nothing more. Judge for yourself. :) (6)

(1) I bet she's eagerly counting the minutes until this gets wanked, anyway. I'm the obliging sort.

(2) Yes, I know a moment or two on Google or HASA will answer this question, and by the time I write this I know who it is after all, but aie all-holy Eru on a Triscuit -- I just can't get my brain past the staggering arrogance of this statement to begin with.)

(3) Yup. We're apparently all "pea-brains," folks. *sad, solemn nod*

(4) "But the poor Fandom Wankers are stuck in their circles of private hell..." This is what happens when a self-proclaimed Artiste tries to stuff flourishes into a skewed sociological analysis.

(5) "...a pack of jeering adolescents cawing or guffawing at anyone who passes them by and displays the least sign of difference..." She didn't mention cheerleaders, or else it'd be perfect.

(6) And if she can use pretentious footnotes, so can I.

Oh, she was featured by Azusa a while back, and it seems she has, in true wanktastic fashion, been completely unable to Get. The Fuck. OVER. It.

You guys should've seen some of the email exchange [info]azusa had with her last month. From the looks of the second email Azu shared with me, it seems like she might be partially under the impression that we mock people for trying to have intelligent discussions, or something like that.

And yes, she does abuse the thesaurus like that in her emails, too. Poor thing. *pets thesaurus, lets it take the rest break it so desperately needs*

hahaha. She just wants more traffic on her website from us. I love all the complex sentances, do you think she got Word to do that for her? HA, she thinks she sounds so smart, too bad that even before I found F_W I was seeing LOTR called the wankiest fandom next to my own HP. Even wankier I suppose. I haven't tried to venture over yet, the stories I hear scare me.
Ahem. My comment to her? See this? * that is the island of NO CARING. You want to know who is on it? ME.

Funny thing is, I offered her a code to join f_w if she was so keen to come in and defend herself personally. She replied with what essentially amounted to a puffed-up permutation of "No thank you, I -have- a life, unlike all you losers." (Apparently, however, she has the time to do an exhaustive sociological analysis of us, which also leads one to the curiosity of how much time she spends lurking here purposes of 'research.' Apparently it's also easier to stand back and defend oneself behind a wall of self-professed credentials than to actually ask us why we find her so obnoxious.)

Because the Fandom Wank does not seem to understand the irony of their situation, namely that although they use the word "wank" as a kind of slang shorthand for everything which they disapprove of or condemn as pointless (which makes it essentially useless as a scientific term in this context) — most people I know would agree that an essentially-closed circle of individuals devoting themselves to nothing but jeering and pointing, with a great deal of mutual back-patting, (often known as a mutual admiration society), would itself be a prime example of analogous mental masturbation.

That sentence started off on one page, and ended up in Cuba. In fact, I think it's one of the longest sentence fragments I have ever seen. NOTE TO PERSON WHOSE USERNAME MAY BE "PHILOSOPHER AT LARGE," BUT I CAN'T TELL FOR SURE BECAUSE THE ARTICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING RESEMBLING A SIGNATURE: If you must write long, baffling sentences, then you could at least make them follow through. Starting a phrase with "Because" indicates that because of one thing, something else is true. Aside from this, which clearly is not the case, as there is a condition but no result -- not to mention an extraneous hyphen which indicates that there is either an aside in the sentence or a bridge between two similar sentences, whereas you did not even complete the first thought -- the word "Because" should never be used at the beginning of a sentence. It's a very impressively long sentence, but it ultimately means absolutely nothing. Predicates are your friend.

Plus, I know you have to be reading this, so if you wish to complain about my harping on your grammar, feel free, since it should be noted that your little article digs into some fandom_wank posts far more deeply, reaching some surprisingly insulting conclusions (such as the one where [info]mistresssaigon is so devoid of humanity that she can't contemplate that people would talk with each other at length about anything). Also:

If they just got out more, they would swiftly realize that not only is all of fandom similarly afflicted, all of civilization is the same way.

Get over yourself.

This is, above and beyond any doubt, perhaps the greatest thing I have ever read here at F_W. The sheer awe which I am experiencing right now could take up several chapters in an epic worthy of Homer or Virgil. I had to stare slackjawed at the screen in disbelief for several minutes before my brain could fully process what it was reading.

And then I began to laugh.

The allegations at time-wasting are perhaps the funniest part, as, in essence, I can't see where this obviously ponderous, weighty, and heady piece of philosophical thought didn't require the exertion of effort that would have been better spent doing any number of things, least of which include bashing one's own head in with a keyboard, or perhaps gnawing one's fingers off to prevent one from every typing again.

In nomine patri, et filii, et spiritus wanki...

Apparently she's also taken time out of the busy schedule she claimed in order to psychoanalyze me via my webpage. Dunno if I should feel flattered by this or not. ^^ (I should also note that she misspells my name at least three times in the course of this exacting analysis.) My page is categorized as "equally filled with vitriolic rants against bad fanfic and irrational fans [as her own], but on a far more personal, and profanity-ridden level, (even containing wishes to inflict grievous bodily harm on the offenders)"

Wow. I want to inflict grievous bodily harm on annoying squeaky fangirls? Or is she referring to some of my more tongue-in-cheek invectives? Something tells me that the concept of sarcasm went right over someone's head here.

The next funny thing is that she doesn't actually disagree with all that was being said at Odd Lots' posting board — in fact, she complains at one point in the thread of being forced to agree with some of the things I said, which galls her because she doesn't like me.

Actually, I believe my precise words were The unfortunate thing is, as someone noted further down, she makes a lot of points I -agree- with. Well, yeah. So do politicians. In other words, the unfortunateness here is not that I dislike her, it's that she could be writing some good essays if she could just keep the damn self-aggrandizement out of it.

What is the most interesting and ironic thing of all to me is that she must have gone to some great lengths to find the debate as well as to spend time following it enough to then complain about it at length.

Actually, it wasn't difficult at all. ^^ The link to her messageboard is rather prominently featured on her website; the debate appeared to have been going on for quite some time. Apparently she's been following us a lot more closely than we've followed her...

Azusa was merely pathetic — someone so threatened by the fact that other people out there in the world are discussing things that she does not understand, with great energy, that she must spend much energy of her own attacking the phenomenon and seeking out others equally ignorant and proud of it to affirm her insecurity.

So does P@L work for Miss Cleo now? Hell, she's about as 'accurate' in her little analysis of my emotional life. She seems quite convinced on the basis of a sliver of my life that I've never had any crises of existence, that I've never spent time lying awake thinking about Big Issues of morality and faith, that it's never factored in any way into my life: apparently, since these are very private issues for me and I don't discuss them on public messageboards, it's to be assumed I have nothing going on in my mind deeper than 'wank wank wank.'

I could laugh my ass off about this, but instead she's pulled me into boggling anew at her 'analysis' of Kookaburra on the basis of her (kookaburra's) comments on the HASA list. Kookaburra is also characterised via P@L's expert analysis as 'stupid' for not realizing that the Mithril Awards weren't a HASA-sponsored activity, which leads me to the question of whether one of P@L's own lackeys making the same mistake would be similarly characterised.

Her psychoanalysis of me continues, to wit: "Instead, they each mistakenly believe that their own fandoms are the worst, the only circles of human civilization filled with such pettiness and concern for issues of such triviality (q.v. Azusa's rants on anime fans.)"

Yes, apparently my rants on anime fans are not just a case of me letting off steam, but because I actually believe anime fans who insist on spelling "Amelia" as "Ameria" are a greater world crisis than starving children.

I also get an interesting insinuation of mental illness thrown my way: A few samples of Asuza's [sic] own vitriol, which really does make her santimoniousness towards the rest of us (especially for "being mean"—!) look like either rankest hypocrisy or schizophrenia

In other words, she's going to show everyone what a bad person I am by picking out the one or two statements in which I made snarks about wanting to hurt people and paste them up as supposedly representative of the whole. And if THAT doesn't work, well, there's always accusations of mental illness to try to take credibility away from your opponent.

Oh, let's see, she has a quote from one of my rants: If you're one of the sorts of people who expounds at length on webpages and bulletin boards about the "incredible beauty and power" of SM, why the last episode is the greatest masterpiece of cinema since "Citizen Kane", and how Usagi is a metaphor for Jesus, please do the rest of us a favor and garrote yourself with piano wire. (And yes, before you ask, I have seen the Original Real Japanese Version. I don't want to get started on this. I'm not saying that it's a bad show-- only that most fans take it entirely too seriously.)

Anyone here think I meant that 'garrote' comment in total seriousness, especially in the middle of something which bills itself as a blatantly tongue-in-cheek rant? Really. Show of hands?

P@L again:

These Parthian shots are just so — wussy. If you believe it, then argue it, dammit; if you don't want to argue it, for whatever reason, then don't brag on your high principles or standards to the rest of us.

So apparently, no one is allowed to make a strong statement of opinion at all in P@L-land without providing extensive philosophical justification for it?

Now, there are some things in her rants which as noted above, are consonant with things I've argued myself — but since she's incapable of expressing herself without the monotonous profanity of your average trucker, I'm not willing to quote them on my page.

In other words, I don't like you so I'm not going to quote the good parts so NYAH NYAH NYAH!

It's interesting how she accuses me of ranting on an excessively 'personal' level on my webpage whilst throwing direct insults at all the f_wers who've managed to piss her off.

Although considering that you have the misfortune to be a member of the human race I may think twice and actually take up that disassociation so I don't have to run into little ignorant cunts who object to people having an opinion and laugh about the extent ot which people go on about things.

Unless, of course, you're a sad attention seeking little whore who wrote all that crap in order to get a rise out of us. Well aren't YOU clever. Why don't you fuck off and go somewhere with the rest of your own kind. I'm sure there's a home for lobotomized socially diseased morons such as yourself.

Oh, I also would be remiss if I didn't mention this development: http://disc.server.com/discussion.cgi?id=196201;article=538;title=At%20The%20Sign%20Of%20The%20Unhinged%20Mind

Apparently, we get our own shrine from P@L if we say stuff on her board. w00t!

I also note her mention of Pansy Burrows, which suggests she's not only keeping tabs on us but on the tinhats as well. Hmmm.

Is she getting paid by the word? I need oxygen halfway through every sentence, and my red-pen hand is twitching.

Am I the only person who was taught that being cogent and coherent is good? That if you can state your case plainly and clearly, it is a good thing?

By the way, re: "been wanked" - Technically the slang is "been Fandom_Wanked," as "wanking" is what is talked about - it was shortened somewhere along the line to a slang word resembling its own antonym.

But it's easier going off for two hours on things you don't understand than it is doing five minutes of research, isn't it.

The one point I agree with is that all fandoms are afflicted with self-aggrandizing posers etc. That's one of the things that draws me to sites like FW and the MSR; even if I'm not involved in the particulars, I recognize the patterns and can sympathize. One of my tongue-in-cheek mottoes is "unity in mediocrity."

But I was always under the impression that everyone realized this, that this was one of the points of it all. That's why it's Fandom_Wank and not HP_Wank or LotR_Wank. Wank is universal. *shrugs*

If the Baby Justin was a better reader, it would have made him cry.

Instead it confused him, and forced him to have hot sex to feel better.

Huh. Trying to read that made my brain hurt. Oh, and look at the overgeneralization. I take it English teachers are no longer teaching what logical fallacies are, and why you should avoid them? Che. I'm part of this community, I'm not in the LotR fandom, and I'm barely in the HP fandom.

*sigh* P@L, you don't know Mistress Saigon and you certainly can't put together an accurate appraisal of her character and relationship with her significant other based upon one post in a journalfen community. That's not an epistemologically sound method for gaining knowledge. If you really are a philosopher you should know what that means.

I on the other hand, do know her and therefore am far more qualified to speak on this than you. That post was affectionate. She is not "horrified" by such behaviour, quite the opposite, she finds it endearing more than anything else.

I'm just wondering what kind of philosopher would come to such specific conclusions based on such flimsy evidence.

I had no idea P@L was *that* P@L! Things slot together at speed.

Given that I was a dissenter in both these discussions, I am in a unique position to find Joan's imaginings of a coherent anti-intellectual ideology of demonised enemy fandom_wank *curious*, to say the least. With indubitable foolishness, I am now writing Joan an email.

Eh, tried to read my way through that, then found better things to do, like fix the doodles on the back of my hand and continue my search for decent SLAYERS slash*. Maybe it's just that I'm not singled out for abuse criticism by her, but I found it profoundly boring and not worth my time.

Eh, to each their own. If she wants to write impenetrable, badly worded essays on us, right on, chick. I ain't giving her the attention from it. Anyway, I obviously can't make her way through her incoherent ramblings because I'm an idiot plebe, right?

* If anyone knows of any good SLAYERS slash/yaoi/yuri, throw me a link. Doubly so if it involves Xelloss...
